一、歌曲來源及背景
這首歌最晚應該出現於16世紀。1569年 Thomas Preston的劇作《A lamentable tragedy mixed ful of pleasant mirth, conteyning the life of Cambises King of Percia》中歌詞是這樣的:
They be at hand Sir with stick and fidle;
They can play a new dance called hey-didle-didle.
1597年 Alexander Montgomerie的《 The Cherry and the Slae》寫到:
But since you think't an easy thing
To mount above the moon,
Of your own fiddle take a spring
And dance when you have done.
1587年倫敦 "Cat and the Fiddle" 小餐館非常有名。1765年倫敦出版《Mother Goose's Melody》刊登為距今最早的版本，歌詞寫到：
Hey diddle diddle,
The Cat and the Fiddle,
The Cow jump'd over the Moon,
The little dog laugh'd to see such Craft,
And the Dish ran away with the Spoon.
