然而,如此殊榮的背後並不是一蹴而就。先是早在九十年代ARRI就開始嘗試的數位化研究,以及後來在Arrilaser膠片記錄儀和Arriscan膠片掃描儀等項目時獲得的經驗,再到後來對數字攝影機D-20、D-21的嘗試,ARRI在圖像科學、影像傳感器技術、軟體開發以及製造工藝上都積累了大量的經驗。後來這些經驗都被用在了ALEXA數字攝影機系統,一代又一代的工程師付出了大量的努力與智慧結晶。而如今,ARRI攝影機系統的所有成就要從這些攝影機所使用的同一款影像傳感器說起。
ARRI為ALEXA SXT、ALEXA Mini、AMIRA攝影機均配備了同一款專門定製的3.4K ALEV III CMOS雙增益構架影像傳感器,為電影人提供無差別的非凡畫質。這枚獨一無二的影像傳感器具備比標準Super35mm更大的感光面積(28.17mm*18.13mm),同時因為這塊傳感器不包含模數轉換器,可以騰出更多的面積用來給像素獲取光信號。所以ARRI的這塊3.4K ALEV III CMOS影像傳感器實現了遠比一般傳感器更大的單個像素感光面積,從而實現了「質量更高的像素,而不是更多」。ARRI用自己對電影技術的真正理解,在ALEXA像素大小、解析度以及畫面質量之間找到了完美的平衡,這些真正電影化的特徵使得ALEXA能夠以HD、2K、4K UHD或4K Cine等格式輸出遠超膠片質感的動人影像。
除此外,獨特的雙增益構造能同時從每一個像素中獲得兩組不同曝光值的信號,合併轉換成高質量的16bit數據並經過機內處理,最終以12bit模式封裝成具備寬廣動態範圍而又高質量的ARRIRAW或者ProRes數據,這意味著ALEXA平臺的高動態範圍畫面在設計之初就已經滿足了面向於未來的HDR需求。同時,ALEXA SXT的廣色域信號記錄能力也已經超越當前絕大多數顯示設備的色彩空間,為Rec 2020這樣的下一代色彩空間標準做好了準備,可以看到,所有關於ALEXA這枚影像傳感器的設計特徵都體現了ARRI 「對畫質永不妥協」的追求。
對於所有裝備了此款傳感器的攝影機ALEXA SXT、ALEXA Mini以及AMIRA來說,無論是緊湊、具備輕量化碳纖維外殼的ALEXA Mini,還是功能強大功能的中堅機型ALEXA SXT,或者是ENG風格的肩扛攝影機AMIRA,每一款攝影機都能實現大於14檔動態範圍高質量畫面記錄,所有機型都能實現ARRI為電影人所設定的同等畫面品質。

It’s been 8 years by now and ARRI’s digital camera lineup has grown bigger than ever before, with models including large sensor ALEXA65 used in high-end feature films, versatile and feature rich ALEXA SXT, compact and lightweight ALEXA Mini as well as AMIRA that revolutionized TV industry. Their unrivaled image quality with no compromise has been widely acclaimed by camera crews shooting TV show, commercial and feature film around the world. However, ARRI’s success is built upon decades of hard work and painstaking effort. ARRI initiated research in digital technologies as early as in the 90s and subsequently developed ARRILASER/ARRISCAN systems as well as D-20/D21 digital cameras. Over the years from these projects ARRI has accumulated a vast amount of experience in imaging science, sensor technology, software development and manufacturing process, combined with the meticulous work from ARRI’s top engineers, it eventually led to the arrival of the ALEXA camera platform. These achievements all start from a sensor that’s shared among a number of ARRI cameras.
ALEXA SXT, ALEXA Mini and AMIRA are all equipped with the same custom developed 3.4K ALEV III CMOS sensor with Dual Gain Architecture that provides filmmakers with the best overall image quality consistent across different camera models. Measuring 28.17mm x 18.13mm, this unique image sensor is slightly larger than standard Super 35mm film, combined with an off-chip A/D converter design and the sensor's 3.4K horizontal photosite count deliver unusually large photosites for an optimal balance between image sharpness on the one hand and high dynamic range, high sensitivity and a low noise floor on the other, resulting in the best overall image quality for HD, 2K, 4K UHD and 4K Cine deliverables.
In addition, the Dual Gain Architecture simultaneously provides two separate read-out paths from each pixel with different amplification. Both paths feed into the camera's A/D converters, delivering a 14 bit image for each path. These images are then combined into a single 16 bit high dynamic range image before being encoded to ARRIRAW or ProRes files at up to 12bit. ALEXA camera platform is therefore uniquely suited to the creation of content for emerging HDR (High Dynamic Range) display technologies. Since ALEXA SXT records a WCG (Wide Color Gamut) signal larger than any current displays can show, its images are ready for new color space standards like Rec 2020. It’s very clear that every aspect of this image sensor design reflects ARRI’s pursuit of the best overall image quality with no compromise.
For all of the ARRI cameras equipped with this sensor, whether it’s the compact and light weight ALEXA Mini with carbon fiber housing, or feature rich workhorse ALEXA SXT, or ENG style AMIRA designed for handheld shooting, every one of them is capable of more than 14 stops of dynamic range and offers filmmakers with consistent high quality images.
Among these cameras, ALEXA Mini is a versatile additional tool in the ALEXA camera range. Designed for specialized shots and for working with gimbals and drones, the ALEXA Mini perfectly complements a full ALEXA shooting kit and allows crews to keep everything within a single system. It combines a compact and lightweight form factor with the same unparalleled image quality from ALEXA and has become another reliable tool for production crews around the world.
As an upgrade to ALEXA XT, the all new ALEXA SXT is the latest addition to the ALEXA camera range. While keeping the 3.4K ALEV III sensor and user interface of the original ALEXA design, it is equipped with the powerful electronics and sophisticated image processing of the ALEXA 65. The combination of the best overall image quality and unequalled workflow efficiency have greatly extended the capabilities of ALEXA SXT cameras, which also help owners maximize Return on Investment.
As one of the highlights, ARRI proudly introduces AMIRA, a versatile camera with an ergonomic design optimized for single-operator use and extended shoulder-mounted operation. Although AMIRA is separate from ALEXA camera range and targets at different usage scenarios. It still features the same sensor and exceptional image quality as the ARRI ALEXA.
Like ALEXA SXT and ALEXA Mini, AMIRA is equipped with the same custom developed 3.4K ALEV III CMOS sensor with Dual Gain Architecture with more than 14 stops of dynamic range. The unusually large photosites and Dual Gain Architecture enable AMIRA to capture virtually noise-free low light images and retain rich details even in the brightest scenes. Not only does AMIRA share the same exceptional image quality as ALEXA, it also features high frame rate shooting at up to 200fps with no crop or quality loss.
AMIRA can accommodate all types of productions from TV shows, low budget feature films, nature documentaries, live events, commercials to news broadcast and multi-cam live TV. Especially in handheld shooting and single operator use scenarios, which are what AMIRA』S ergonomic design is optimized for. For projects that require minimal setting up or rigging, AMIRA’s high dynamic range enables cinematographers to handle any challenging scene with ease. In addition, not only would low budget productions benefit from AMIRA’s reliability, the same image quality as ALEXA as well as affordable and efficient CFast 2.0 workflows, it’s also an ideal and economical choice for B cameras on bigger productions.
