The saying is in fact a humorous expression that suggests everyone comes to the same conclusion whether or not they have 「great minds」.

The proverb originates from the 19th century. The phrasing was first used in 1816 in Carl Theodor von Unlanski's biography 「The woful history of the unfortunate Eudoxia」: 「It may occur that an editor has already printed something on the identical subject - great minds think alike, you know.」

「英雄所見略同」出自《三國志·蜀書·龐統傳》中的晉代虞溥的《江表傳》，原文為「天下智謀之士所見略同耳」。
How to use the proverb:
If you are in a conversation with your friend, and you happen to agree on a controversial topic or issue, you can say 「Great minds think alike」.
Or if you and your friend think of the same thing at the same time, you can also use the proverb to put emphasis on the coincidence.
