Chapter 6: THE JOURNEY FROMPLATFORM NINE AND THREE-QUARTERS
從九又四分之三站臺開始的旅程
Harry's last month with theDursleys wasn't fun.
哈利與德思禮一家相處的最後一個月並不愉快。
True, Dudley was now so scaredof Harry he wouldn't stay in the same room.
說真的，達力著實被哈利嚇壞了，他不敢跟哈利待在同一個房間裡。
While Aunt Petunia and UncleVernon didn't shut Harry in his cupboard, force him to do anything, or shout athim — in fact, they didn't speak to him at all.
佩妮姨媽和弗農姨父也不敢再把哈利關在儲藏間裡，也不強迫他幹活兒了，也不再朝他大喊大叫— 事實上，他們根本不跟他講話。
Half terrified, half furious,they acted as though any chair with Harry in it was empty.
一半出於恐懼，一半由於惱怒，他們對哈利的存在視而不見。
Although this was animprovement in many ways, it did become a bit depressing after a while.
儘管這在許多方面是一個進步，但時間一久就使人感到有些沒趣。
Harry kept to his room, withhis new owl for company.
哈利大多時間都待在他的房間裡，有他新買的貓頭鷹做伴。
He had decided to call herHedwig, a name he had found in A History of Magic.
他決定管它叫海德薇，這是他從《魔法史》這本書裡找到的名字。
His school books were veryinteresting.
他的學校課本都很有趣。
He lay on his bed reading lateinto the night, Hedwig swooping in and out of the open window as she pleased.
他躺在床上，一讀就到深夜，海德薇從打開的窗口盡情地飛進飛出。
It was lucky that Aunt Petuniadidn't come in to vacuum anymore, because Hedwig kept bringing back dead mice.
幸運的是佩妮姨媽不再到房間裡來吸塵了，因為海德薇總是叼死耗子回來。
Every night before he went tosleep, Harry ticked off another day on the piece of paper he had pinned to thewall, counting down to September the first.
哈利把九月一日以前每天的日期一天一天寫在一張紙上，釘在牆上，每天臨睡前就在第二天的日期上打一個鉤。
On the last day of August hethought he'd better speak to his aunt and uncle about getting to King's Crossstation the next day, so he went down to the living room where they werewatching a quiz show on television.
八月的最後一天，哈利覺得最好還是跟姨父姨媽談談明天去國王十字車站的事，於是他下樓來到起居室，姨父姨媽正在看競猜電視節目。
He cleared his throat to letthem know he was there, and Dudley screamed and ran from the room.
他清了一下嗓子，好讓他們知道他來了；達力尖叫著跑出屋去。
"Er - Uncle Vernon?"Uncle Vernon grunted to show he was listening.
「哦— 弗農姨父？」弗農姨父哼了一聲，表示他在聽。
"Er - I need to be atKing's Cross tomorrow to — to go to Hogwarts."
「哦— 我明天得去國王十字車站— 去霍格沃茨。」
Uncle Vernon grunted again.
弗農姨父又哼了一聲。
"Would it be all right ifyou gave me a lift?"
「請問您用車送我一下行嗎？」
Grunt.
「哼。」
Harry supposed that meant yes."Thank you."
哈利認為這就是表示可以。-「謝謝您。」
He was about to go backupstairs when Uncle Vernon actually spoke.
他剛要回到摟上去，弗農姨父卻真的開口說話了。
"Funny way to get to awizards' school, the train.
「坐火車去巫師學校未免太可笑了。
Magic carpets all gotpunctures, have they?"
他們的魔毯全都破光了嗎？」
Harry didn't say anything.
哈利沒吭聲。
"Where is this school,anyway?"
「這所學校到底在什麼地方？你說。」
"I don't know," saidHarry, realizing this for the first time.
「我不知道。」哈利說，剛剛才想到這一點。
He pulled the ticket Hagridhad given him out of his pocket.
他從衣袋裡掏出海格給他的火車票。
"I just take the trainfrom platform nine and three-quarters at eleven o'clock," he read.
「我應該坐十一點鐘從九又四分之三站臺開出的火車。」 他讀道。
His aunt and uncle stared.
他姨父姨媽瞪大了眼睛。
"Platform what?"
「第幾站臺？」
"Nine andthree-quarters."
「九又四分之三站臺。」
"Don't talkrubbish," said Uncle Vernon. "There is no platform nine andthree-quarters."
「別胡說八道了，」弗農姨父說。「根本就沒有什么九又四分之三站臺。」
"It's on my ticket."
「我的火車票上就是這麼寫的。」
"Barking," saidUncle Vernon, "howling mad, the lot of them.
「胡說，」弗農姨父說，「他們好多人都瘋了，到處亂咋呼。
You'll see. You'll just wait.
你會明白的。你等著瞧吧。
All right, we'll take you toKing's Cross.
好了，我們送你去國王十字車站。
We're going up to Londontomorrow anyway, or I wouldn't bother."
反正我們明天要去倫敦，要不然我才不去找麻煩呢。」
"Why are you going toLondon?" Harry asked, trying to keep things friendly.
「您上倫敦做什麼？」哈利問，希望保持友好氣氛。
"Taking Dudley to thehospital," growled Uncle Vernon.
「帶達力上醫院，」弗農姨父咆哮起來。
"Got to have that ruddytail removed before he goes to Smeltings."
「在他上斯梅廷之前，把那條可惡的尾巴割掉。」
Harry woke at five o'clock thenext morning and was too excited and nervous to go back to sleep.
第二天，哈利早上五點就醒來了。他又興奮又緊張，再也睡不著了。
He got up and pulled on hisjeans because he didn't want to walk into the station in his wizard's robes —he'd change on the train.
他從床上爬起來，穿上牛仔褲，因為他不願穿巫師長袍進火車站—— 他準備上車再換。
He checked his Hogwarts listyet again to make sure he had everything he needed, saw that Hedwig was shutsafely in her cage, and then paced the room, waiting for the Dursleys to getup.
他又核對了一遍霍格沃茨開列的購物單，看需要的東西是否都買齊了，再看看海德薇是不是好好地關在籠子裡，之後就在房間裡踱起步來，等候德思禮夫婦起床。
Two hours later, Harry's huge,heavy trunk had been loaded into the Dursleys' car, Aunt Petunia had talkedDudley into sitting next to Harry, and they had set off.
兩小時後，哈利沉重的大箱子終於被抬上了德思禮家的汽車，佩妮姨媽說服達力坐到哈利身邊，他們就上路了。
They reached King's Cross athalf past ten.
他們十點半鐘來到國王十字車站。
Uncle Vernon dumped Harry'strunk onto a trolley and wheeled it onto the station for him.
弗農姨父把哈利的皮箱放到手推車上幫他推進站。
Harry thought this wasstrangely kind until Uncle Vernon stopped dead, facing the platforms with anasty grin on his face.
哈利正在琢磨弗農姨父為什麼一下子變得出奇地好，弗農姨父突然面對站臺停下來不走了，心懷鬼胎地咧嘴一笑。
"Well, there you are,boy. Platform nine - platform ten.
「好了，你到了，小子。第9站臺— 第10站臺。
Your platform should besomewhere in the middle, but they don't seem to have built it yet, dothey?"
你的站臺應該是在這兩個站臺之間吧，可看起來好像還沒來得及修建呢，是吧？」
He was quite right, of course.
他說得當然不錯。
There was a big plastic numbernine over one platform and a big plastic number ten over the one next to it,and in the middle, nothing at all.
在一個站臺上掛著一塊大大的9號塑料牌，另一個站臺上掛著大大的10號塑料牌，而兩者中間什麼也沒有。
"Have a good term,"said Uncle Vernon with an even nastier smile.
「祝你學期順利，」弗農姨父說著又咧嘴一笑，顯得更沒有好心。
He left without another word.
他沒有再說什麼就走開了。
Harry turned and saw theDursleys drive away.
哈利轉身眼看弗農一家開車離去。
All three of them werelaughing.
他們三個人都在哈哈大笑。
Harry's mouth went rather dry.
哈利覺得嘴有點兒發乾。
What on earth was he going todo?
他究竟該怎麼辦呢？
He was starting to attract alot of funny looks, because of Hedwig.
因為海德薇，他已經招來許多好奇的目光。
He'd have to ask someone.
他得找人問問。
He stopped a passing guard,but didn't dare mention platform nine and three-quarters.
他攔住一個過路的警衛，但不敢提九又四分之三站臺。
The guard had never heard ofHogwarts and when Harry couldn't even tell him what part of the country it wasin, he started to get annoyed, as though Harry was being stupid on purpose.
警衛從來沒聽說過霍格沃茨。當他發現哈利甚至說不清霍格沃茨具體在什麼地方時，他開始生氣了，認為哈利故意裝傻愚弄他。
Getting desperate, Harry askedfor the train that left at eleven o'clock, but the guard said there wasn't one.
哈利實在沒轍感到快絕望了，只好問十一點發出的列車有幾班。警衛說一班也沒有。
In the end the guard strodeaway, muttering about time wasters.
最後警衛邁著大步走開了，一路抱怨有些人專門浪費別人的時間。
Harry was now trying hard notto panic.
這時哈利告誡自己儘量不要驚慌失措。
According to the large clockover the arrivals board, he had ten minutes left to get on the train toHogwarts and he had no idea how to do it.
到達列車時刻表上方的大鐘顯示，再過十分鐘他就該登上開往霍格沃茨的列車了，可他一點也不知道該怎麼辦。
He was stranded in the middleof a station with a trunk he could hardly lift, a pocket full of wizard money,and a large owl.
他身邊是一隻他簡直提不動的大箱子，滿滿一口袋魔幣和一隻大貓頭鷹，他站在站臺中央，一籌莫展。
Hagrid must have forgotten totell him something you had to do, like tapping the third brick on the left toget into Diagon Alley.
一定是海格忘記告訴他諸如敲左邊第三塊磚就可以到達對角巷之類的事了。
He wondered if he should getout his wand and start tapping the ticket box between platforms nine and ten.
他在想要不要拿出魔杖來敲第9和第10站臺之間的檢票口。
At that moment a group ofpeople passed just behind him and he caught a few words of what they weresaying.
正在這時，一群人從他背後經過，偶爾一兩句話飄進他的耳朵裡。
"- packed with Muggles,of course -"
「— 當然擠滿了麻瓜們— 」
Harry swung round.
哈利連忙轉身。
The speaker was a plump womanwho was talking to four boys, all with flaming red hair.
只見說話的是一個矮矮胖胖的女人，正在跟四個火紅頭髮的男孩說話。
Each of them was pushing atrunk like Harry's in front of him — and they had an owl.
他們每人都推著像哈利那樣的皮箱—— 他們也有一隻貓頭鷹。
Heart hammering, Harry pushedhis trolley after them.
哈利的心怦怦直跳，連忙推著車緊跟著他們。
They stopped and so did he,just near enough to hear what they were saying.
他們停下來，他也跟著停在離他們不遠的地方，以便能聽見他們說話。
"Now, what's the platformnumber?" said the boys' mother.
「好了，是幾號站臺？」孩子們的母親問。
"Nine andthree-quarters!" piped a small girl, also red-headed, who was holding herhand, "Mom, can't I go. . ."
「九又四分之三！」一個火紅頭髮的小姑娘牽著媽媽的手，尖著嗓子大聲說。「媽媽，我能去……嗎？」
"You're not old enough,Ginny, now be quiet. All right, Percy, you go first."
「你還太小，金妮，現在，別說話了。珀西，你走在最前頭。」
What looked like the oldestboy marched toward platforms nine and ten.
看上去年齡最大的那個男孩朝第9和第10站臺中間走去。
Harry watched, careful not toblink in case he missed it — but just as the boy reached the divide between thetwo platforms, a large crowd of tourists came swarming in front of him and bythe time the last rucksack had cleared away, the boy had vanished.
哈利目不轉睛地盯著他，連眼也不敢眨，生怕漏掉了什麼—— 但正當那孩子走到第9與第10站臺交界的地方時，一大群旅客突然擁到哈利前面，等最後一隻大帆布背包挪開時，那孩子竟然不見了。
"Fred, you next,"the plump woman said.
「弗雷德，該你了。」胖女人說。
"I'm not Fred, I'mGeorge," said the boy.
「我不是弗雷德，我是喬治。」孩子說。
"Honestly, woman, youcall yourself our mother? Can't you tell I'm George?"
「說實在的，您說您是我們的母親，可為什麼您認不出我是喬治呢？」
"Sorry, George,dear."
「對不起，喬治，親愛的。」
"Only joking, I amFred," said the boy, and off he went.
「開個玩笑，我是弗雷德。」這孩子說完就朝前走了。
His twin called after him tohurry up, and he must have done so, because a second later, he had gone — buthow had he done it?
他的孿生兄弟在背後催他快點。他想必聽了他的話，因為他一轉眼就不見了— 可他是怎麼做的呢？
Now the third brother waswalking briskly toward the ticket barrier he was almost there - and then, quitesuddenly, he wasn't anywhere.
這時第三個兄弟邁著輕快的步子朝檢票口走去— 他剛要走到— 突然，也不見了。
There was nothing else for it.
沒有別的辦法。
"Excuse me," Harrysaid to the plump woman.
「對不起。」哈利對胖女人說。
"Hello, dear," shesaid.
「喂，親愛的，」她說。
"First time at Hogwarts?Ron's new, too."
「頭一回上霍格沃茨吧？羅恩也是新生。」
She pointed at the last andyoungest of her sons.
她指著最後、也是她最小的兒子說。
He was tall, thin, andgangling, with freckles, big hands and feet, and a long nose.
這孩子又瘦又高，顯得笨手笨腳，滿臉雀斑，大手、大腳、長鼻子。
"Yes," said Harry.
「是的，」哈利說。
"The thing is - the thingis, I don't know how to -"
「問題是— 問題是我不知道該怎麼去— 」
"How to get onto theplatform?" she said kindly, and Harry nodded.
「該怎麼去站臺是嗎？」她善解人意地說，哈利點點頭。
"Not to worry," shesaid.
「別擔心，」她說。
"All you have to do iswalk straight at the barrier between platforms nine and ten.
「你只要照直朝第9和第10站臺之間的牆走就是了。
Don't stop and don't be scaredyou'll crash into it, that's very important.
別停下來，別害怕，照直往裡衝，這很重要。
Best do it at a bit of a runif you're nervous.
要是你心裡緊張，你就一溜小跑。
Go on, go now beforeRon."
走吧。你先走，羅恩跟著你。」
"Er - okay," saidHarry.
「哦— 好吧。」哈利說。
He pushed his trolley aroundand stared at the barrier.
他把小車掉過頭來，眼睛拼命盯著檢票口。
It looked very solid.
那地方的欄杆看起來還很結實呢。
He started to walk toward it.
他開始向檢票口走去。
People jostled him on theirway to platforms nine and ten.
一路上被擁向9和10站臺的旅客推來搡去。
Harry walked more quickly.
哈利加快了腳步。
He was going to smash rightinto that ticket box and then he'd be in trouble - leaning forward on histrolley, he broke into a heavy run - the barrier was coming nearer and nearer.
他準備直接衝進票亭，但是遇到了麻煩，他彎腰趴在手推車上，向前猛衝，眼看離欄杆越來越近。
He wouldn't be able to stop —the trolley was out of control — he was a foot away — he closed his eyes readyfor the crash —
他已無法停步—— 手推車也失去了控制—— 他閉上眼睛準備撞上去——
It didn't come. . . he kept onrunning. . . he opened his eyes.
但什麼事也沒有發生……他繼續朝前跑……他睜開眼睛。
A scarlet steam engine waswaiting next to a platform packed with people.
一輛深紅色蒸汽機車停靠在擠滿旅客的站臺旁。
A sign overhead said Hogwarts'Express, eleven o'clock.
列車上掛的標牌寫著：霍格沃茨特快，十一時。
Harry looked behind him andsaw a wrought-iron archway where the ticket box had been, with the wordsPlatform Nine and Three-Quarters on it.
哈利回頭一看，原來檢票口的地方現在竟成了一條鍛鐵拱道，上邊寫著：九又四分之三站臺。
He had done it.
他成功了。
Smoke from the engine driftedover the heads of the chattering crowd, while cats of every color wound hereand there between their legs.
蒸汽機車的濃煙在嘁嘁喳喳的人群上空繚繞，各種花色的貓咪在人們腳下穿來穿去。
Owls hooted to each other in adisgruntled sort of way over the babble and the scraping of heavy trunks.
在人群嗡嗡的說話聲和拖拉笨重行李的嘈雜聲中，貓頭鷹也刺耳地鳴叫著，你呼我應。
The first few carriages werealready packed with students, some hanging out of the window to talk to theirfamilies, some fighting over seats.
頭幾節車廂已經擠滿了學生，他們有的從車窗探出身來和家人說話，有的在座位上打鬧。
Harry pushed his trolley offdown the platform in search of an empty seat.
哈利在站臺上推著小車朝前走，準備找一個空位子。
He passed a round-faced boywho was saying, "Gran, I've lost my toad again."
他走過時，一個圓臉男孩說：「奶奶，我又把蟾蜍弄丟了。」
"Oh, Neville," heheard the old woman sigh.
「唉，納威呀。」他聽見一個老太婆嘆氣說。
A boy with dreadlocks wassurrounded by a small crowd.
一個留著駭人長發綹的男孩被一些孩子圍著。
"Give us a look, Lee, goon."
「讓咱們也見識見識，李，快點。」
The boy lifted the lid of abox in his arms, and the people around him shrieked and yelled as somethinginside poked out a long, hairy leg.
那個孩子把抱著的盒子打開，裡邊露出一隻毛茸茸的長腿，嚇得周圍的孩子們嘰哇亂叫，直往後退。
Harry pressed on through thecrowd until he found an empty compartment near the end of the train.
哈利從人群中擠過去，在靠近車尾的地方找到一個空隔間。
He put Hedwig inside first andthen started to shove and heave his trunk toward the train door.
他先把海德薇放上去，然後連拖帶拉地把他的皮箱朝車門口搬。
He tried to lift it up thesteps but could hardly raise one end and twice he dropped it painfully on hisfoot.
他想把皮箱搬上踏板，可是一點幾也抬不起來。他試了兩次，箱子都重重地砸在他腳上。
"Want a hand?" Itwas one of the red-haired twins he'd followed through the ticket box.
「要幫忙嗎？」說話的正好是他在闖檢票口時碰到的那對火紅頭髮孿生兄弟中的一個。
"Yes, please," Harrypanted.
「是的，勞駕搭把手吧。」哈利氣喘籲籲地說。
"Oy, Fred! C'mere andhelp!"
「喂，弗雷德，快過來幫忙！」
With the twins' help, Harry'strunk was at last tucked away in a corner of the compartment.
有孿生兄弟幫忙，哈利總算把箱子推到了隔間角落裡。
"Thanks," saidHarry, pushing his sweaty hair out of his eyes.
「多謝了。」哈利說，一邊把汗溼的頭髮從眼前掠開。
"What's that?" saidone of the twins suddenly, pointing at Harry's lightning scar.
「那是什麼？」孿生兄弟中的一個突然指著哈利那道閃電形傷疤說。
"Blimey," said theother twin. "Are you -?"
「哎呀，我的天哪，」孿生兄弟中的另一個說，「莫非你是—？」
"He is," said thefirst twin.
「他是……」孿生兄弟中第一個說話的說。
"Aren't you?" headded to Harry.
「你是不是？」他又問哈利。
"What?" said Harry.
「是什麼？」哈利問。
"Harry Potter."chorused the twins.
「哈利·波特。」孿生兄弟異口同聲地說。
"Oh, him," saidHarry. "I mean, yes, I am."
「哦，他呀。」哈利說，「我是說，不錯，我就是。」
The two boys gawked at him,and Harry felt himself going red.
兄弟倆呆呆地盯著他看，哈利覺得臉都紅了。
Then, to his relief, a voicecame floating in through the train's open door.
這時從開著的車門口傳來一陣喊聲，使哈利如釋重負。
"Fred? George? Are youthere?"
「弗雷德？喬治？你們在車上嗎？」
"Coming, Mom." Witha last look at Harry, the twins hopped off the train.
「就來了，媽媽。」孿生兄弟最後看了一眼就跳下車去。
Harry sat down next to thewindow where, half hidden, he could watch the red-haired family on the platformand hear what they were saying.
哈利靠窗口坐下，半遮半掩。他能看到站臺上紅頭髮的一家人，也能聽見他們在說些什麼。
Their mother had just takenout her handkerchief.
孩子們的母親正掏出一塊手帕。
"Ron, you've gotsomething on your nose."
「羅恩，你鼻子上有髒東西。」
The youngest boy tried to jerkout of the way, but she grabbed him and began rubbing the end of his nose.
最小的一個正要躲閃，卻被母親一把抓住，替他揩鼻子尖。
"Mom- geroff" Hewriggled free.
「媽媽— 放開我。」他掙脫了。
"Aaah, has ickle Ronniegot somefink on his nosie?" said one of the twins.
「好哇，羅恩，你這個小鬼頭，鼻子又碰灰啦？」孿生兄弟中的一個說。
"Shut up," said Ron.
「住嘴。」羅恩說。
"Where's Percy?"said their mother.
「珀西呢？」他們的母親問。
"He's coming now."The oldest boy came striding into sight.
「他來了。」遠遠看見他們的大哥大步朝這邊走了過來。
He had already changed intohis billowing black Hogwarts robes, and Harry noticed a shiny silver badge onhis chest with the letter P on it.
他已經換上了他那件飄飄擺擺的霍格沃茨黑色長袍。哈利發現他的胸前別著一個銀光閃閃的字母P。
"Can't stay long,Mother," he said. "I'm up front, the prefects have got twocompartments to themselves -"
「我不能待太久，媽媽，」他說，「我在前邊，那裡專門給級長劃出了兩個隔間—— 」
"Oh, are you a prefect,Percy?" said one of the twins, with an air of great surprise.
「哎呀，珀西，你原來是級長呀？」孿生兄弟中的一個用非常吃驚的口吻說。
"You should have saidsomething, we had no idea."
「你早該告訴我們，我一點兒都不知道呢。」
"Hang on, I think Iremember him saying something about it," said the other twin.
「慢著，我記得他說過，』孿生兄弟中的另一個說。
"Once -" "Ortwice -" "A minute" "All summer -"
『整整一個夏天—』 『—每分鐘都要說— 』 『一次—』 『或者兩次— 」
"Oh, shut up," saidPercy the Prefect.
「哎呀，住嘴。」級長珀西說。
"How come Percy gets newrobes, anyway?" said one of the twins.
「你說，珀西是怎麼弄到新長袍的？」孿生兄弟中的一個問。
"Because he's aprefect," said their mother fondly.
「因為他是級長呀。」母親憐愛地說。
"All right, dear, well,have a good term — send me an owl when you get there."
「好了，親愛的，祝你學期順利，到學校以後讓貓頭鷹給我帶封信來。」
She kissed Percy on the cheekand he left.
她親過珀西的面頰，珀西就走開了。
Then she turned to the twins.
之後，她轉向孿生兄弟。
"Now, you two - thisyear, you behave yourselves.
「現在輪到你們倆了—— 這一年你們倆要放規矩點。
If I get one more owl tellingme you've - you've blown up a toilet or -"
如果貓頭鷹給我報信，說你們—— 你們炸了一隻馬桶，或是—— 」
"Blown up a toilet? We'venever blown up a toilet."
「炸了一隻馬桶？我們從來沒炸過馬桶。」
"Great idea though,thanks, Mom."
「這倒是好主意，多謝了，媽媽。」
"It's not funny. And lookafter Ron."
「這可不是鬧著玩的。好好照顧羅恩。」
"Don't worry, ickleRonniekins is safe with us."
「放心，羅恩小鬼頭跟著我們不會有事。」
"Shut up," said Ronagain.
「住嘴。」羅恩說。
He was almost as tall as thetwins already and his nose was still pink where his mother had rubbed it.
他的個子差不多跟孿生兄弟一般高，只是鼻尖上他媽媽擦過的地方還發紅。
"Hey, Mom, guess what?Guess who we just met on the train?"
「 嘿，媽媽，您猜怎麼著？猜猜我剛才在火車上碰見誰了？」
Harry leaned back quickly sothey couldn't see him looking.
哈利連忙往後閃，免得被他們發現他在偷看。
"You know thatblack-haired boy who was near us in the station? Know who he is?"
「你知道剛才在車站上，站在我們旁邊的那個黑頭髮的男孩嗎？知道他是誰嗎？」
"Who?" - "HarryPotter!"
「誰？」-「哈利·波特！」
Harry heard the little girl'svoice.
哈利聽到了一個小女孩的聲音。
"Oh, Mom, can I go on thetrain and see him, Mom, eh please. . . ."
「哎呀，媽媽，我能上車去看看他嗎？求求您了，媽媽……」
"You've already seen him,Ginny, and the poor boy isn't something you goggle at in a zoo.

They leaned out of the windowfor her to kiss them good-bye, and their younger sister began to cry.

The train began to move.
火車啟動了。
Harry saw the boys' motherwaving and their sister, half laughing, half crying, running to keep up withthe train until it gathered too much speed, then she fell back and waved.

Harry watched the girl and hermother disappear as the train rounded the corner.

Houses flashed past thewindow.

Harry shook his head and theboy sat down.

He glanced at Harry and thenlooked quickly out of the window, pretending he hadn't looked.

Harry saw he still had a blackmark on his nose.

"Hey, Ron." Thetwins were back.

"Listen, we're going downthe middle of the train -Lee Jordan's got a giant tarantula down there."

"Right," mumbledRon.
「哦。」羅恩咕噥了一聲。
"Harry," said theother twin, "did we introduce ourselves?

Fred and George Weasley.

The twins slid the compartmentdoor shut behind them.

"Oh - well, I thought itmight be one of Fred and George's jokes," said Ron.

Harry pulled back his fringeto show the lightning scar.

Ron stared.
羅恩瞪大了眼睛。
"So that's whereYou-Know-Who -?"

"Yes," said Harry,"but I can't remember it."

"Nothing?" said Roneagerly.

"Well - I remember a lotof green light, but nothing else."

"Wow," said Ron.

He sat and stared at Harry fora few moments, then, as though he had suddenly realized what he was doing, helooked quickly out of the window again.

"Are all your familywizards?" asked Harry, who found Ron just as interesting as Ron found him.

This seemed to cheer Ron up.

I've got loads to learn. . . .I bet," he added, voicing for the first time something that had beenworrying him a lot lately, "I bet I'm the worst in the class."

"You won't be. There'sloads of people who come from Muggle families and they learn quickenough."

Ron stared as Harry brought itall back in to the compartment and tipped it onto an empty seat.

"Starving," saidHarry, taking a large bite out of a pumpkin pasty.

There were four sandwiches inthere.

He pulled one of them apartand said, "She always forgets I don't like corned beef."

"Swap you for one ofthese," said Harry, holding up a pasty. "Go on -"

"You don't want this,it's all dry," said Ron.

"She hasn't got muchtime," he added quickly, "you know, with five of us."

"Go on, have apasty," said Harry, who had never had anything to share before or, indeed,anyone to share it with.

It was a nice feeling, sittingthere with Ron, eating their way through all Harry's pasties, cakes, andcandies (the sandwiches lay forgotten) .

"What are these?"Harry asked Ron, holding up a pack of Chocolate Frogs.

He was starting to feel thatnothing would surprise him.

"But see what the cardis. I'm missing Agrippa."

"What?"

"Oh, of course, youwouldn't know - Chocolate Frogs have cards, inside them, you know, to collect -famous witches and wizards.

I've got about five hundred,but I haven't got Agrippa or Ptolemy."

Harry unwrapped his ChocolateFrog and picked up the card.

It showed a man's face.

He wore half-moon glasses, hada long, crooked nose, and flowing silver hair, beard, and mustache.

Ron's eyes strayed to the pileof Chocolate Frogs waiting to be unwrapped.

"But in, you know, theMuggle world, people just stay put in photos."

"You want to be carefulwith those," Ron warned Harry.

"When they say everyflavor, they mean every flavor - you know, you get all the ordinary ones likechocolate and peppermint and marmalade, but then you can get spinach and liverand tripe.

Harry got toast, coconut,baked bean, strawberry, curry, grass, coffee, sardine, and was even braveenough to nibble the end off a funny gray one Ron wouldn't touch, which turnedout to be pepper.

The countryside now flyingpast the window was becoming wilder.

Now there were woods, twistingrivers, and dark green hills.

There was a knock on the doorof their compartment and the round-faced boy Harry had passed on platform nineand three-quarters came in.

He looked tearful.

"Sorry," he said,"but have you seen a toad at all?"

The rat was still snoozing onRon's lap.

He rummaged around in histrunk and pulled out a very battered-looking wand.

She had a bossy sort of voice,lots of bushy brown hair, and rather large front teeth.

"We've already told himwe haven't seen it," said Ron, but the girl wasn't listening, she waslooking at the wand in his hand.

He waved his wand, but nothinghappened.

Scabbers stayed gray and fastasleep.

'Course, everyone gets scaredwhen something like this happens in case You-Know-Who's behind it."

Harry turned this news over inhis mind.
哈利在腦子裡反覆琢磨這件新聞。
He was starting to get aprickle of fear every time You-Know-Who was mentioned.

He supposed this was all partof entering the magical world, but it had been a lot more comfortable saying"Voldemort" without worrying.

"What's your Quidditchteam?" Ron asked.

"Oh, you wait, it's thebest game in the world -"

And he was off, explaining allabout the four balls and the positions of the seven players, describing famousgames he'd been to with his brothers and the broomstick he'd like to get if hehad the money.
接著他就滔滔不絕地講解四隻球，七名隊員的位置，繪聲繪色地講他跟幾個哥哥去看的幾場有名的球賽，並說等他有了錢，他要買一把他喜歡的飛天掃帚。
He was just taking Harrythrough the finer points of the game when the compartment door slid open yet again,but it wasn't Neville the toadless boy, or Hermione Granger this time.
當他正好講到球賽最精彩的地方時，隔間門又被推開了，不過這回進來的不是丟失蟾蜍的男孩納威，也不是赫敏·格蘭傑。
Three boys entered, and Harryrecognized the middle one at once: it was the pale boy from Madam Malkin's robeshop.
進來了三個男孩，哈利立刻認出中間的一個正是他在摩金夫人長袍店裡遇到的那個面色蒼白的男孩。
He was looking at Harry with alot more interest than he'd shown back in Diagon Alley.
他懷著比在對角巷時大得多的興趣注視著哈利。
"Is it true?" hesaid.

"They're saying all downthe train that Harry Potter's in this compartment. So it's you, is it?"

"Yes," said Harry.

He was looking at the otherboys.
他看著另外兩個男孩。
Both of them were thickset andlooked extremely mean.

Standing on either side of thepale boy, they looked like bodyguards.
站在小白臉兩邊，一邊一個，簡直像他的一對保鏢。
"Oh, this is Crabbe andthis is Goyle," said the pale boy carelessly, noticing where Harry waslooking.
「哦，這是克拉布，這是高爾。」面色蒼白的男孩發現哈利在看他們，就隨隨便便地說。
"And my name's Malfoy,Draco Malfoy."
「我叫馬爾福，德拉科·馬爾福。」
Ron gave a slight cough, whichmight have been hiding a snigger.

Draco Malfoy looked at him.

"Think my name's funny,do you?

He turned back to Harry.

"You'll soon find outsome wizarding families are much better than others, Potter.

They didn't know what was goodfor them, either.

You hang around with riffrafflike the Weasleys and that Hagrid, and it'll rub off on you."

Both Harry and Ron stood up.

Ron's face is as red as hishair, "Say that again!" he said.

"Oh, you're going tofight us, are you?" Malfoy sneered.

"Unless you get outnow," said Harry, more bravely than he felt, because Crabbe and Goyle werea lot bigger than him or Ron.

"But we don't feel likeleaving, do we, boys?

We've eaten all our food andyou still seem to have some."

Goyle reached toward theChocolate Frogs next to Ron — Ron leapt forward, but before he'd so much astouched Goyle, Goyle let out a horrible yell.
高爾伸手去拿羅恩旁邊的巧克力蛙……羅恩朝前一撲，根本還沒碰到高爾，就聽高爾一聲慘叫。
Scabbers the rat was hangingoff his finger, sharp little teeth sunk deep into Goyle's knuckle —

Crabbe and Malfoy backed awayas Goyle swung Scabbers round and round, howling, and when Scabbers finallyflew off and hit the window, all three of them disappeared at once.
高爾一邊大叫，一邊不停地揮手想把斑斑甩掉；克拉布和馬爾福直往後退；最後斑斑終於被甩掉了，撞到車窗上；他們三人也立刻趁機溜掉了。
Perhaps they thought therewere more rats lurking among the sweets, or perhaps they'd heard footsteps,because a second later, Hermione Granger had come in.
也許他們以為糖果裡還埋伏著更多的老鼠'也許他們已經聽到了腳步聲，因為跟著赫敏·格蘭傑就進來了。
"What has been goingon?" she said, looking at the sweets all over the floor and Ron picking upScabbers by his tail.
「出什麼事了？」她看著撒滿一地的糖果問。羅恩提著斑斑的尾巴，把它從地上拾起來。
"I think he's beenknocked out," Ron said to Harry.
「我想，它肯定摔暈了。」羅恩對哈利說。
He looked closer at Scabbers.
他湊到斑斑跟前仔細查看。
"No — I don't believe it— he's gone back to sleep." And so he had.
「哎呀，我簡直不敢相信，它又睡著了。」它真的睡著了。
"You've met Malfoybefore?"
「你以前碰到過馬爾福嗎？」
Harry explained about theirmeeting in Diagon Alley.
哈利向羅恩講述了他在對角巷與馬爾福相遇的事。
"I've heard of hisfamily," said Ron darkly.

"They were some of thefirst to come back to our side after You-Know-Who disappeared.

Said they'd been bewitched.

My dad doesn't believe it.

He says Malfoy's father didn'tneed an excuse to go over to the Dark Side."

He turned to Hermione."Can we help you with something?"
他又轉過身來對赫敏說：「需要我們幫什麼忙嗎？」
"You'd better hurry upand put your robes on, I've just been up the front to ask the driver and hesays we're nearly there.

You haven't been fighting,have you? You'll be in trouble before we even get there!"

"Scabbers has beenfighting, not us," said Ron, scowling at her.
「斑斑幹了一架，我們沒有。」羅恩繃著臉瞪著她說。
"Would you mind leavingwhile we change?"
「我們要換衣服了，請你出去一下好嗎？」
"All right — I only camein here because people outside are behaving very childishly, racing up and downthe corridors," said Hermione in a sniffy voice.
「好吧—— 我來這裡是因為外面那些人太淘氣了，在走道上跑來跑去。」赫敏不屑地說。
"And you've got dirt onyour nose, by the way, did you know?"
「哦，順便說一句，你鼻子上有塊髒東西，你知道嗎？」
Ron glared at her as she left.

Harry peered out of thewindow.
哈利朝車窗外仔細地瞧了一眼。
It was getting dark.

He could see mountains andforests under a deep purple sky.
他看見深紫色的天空下一片山巒和樹林。
The train did seem to beslowing down.
火車似乎減慢了速度。
He and Ron took off theirjackets and pulled on their long black robes.
哈利和羅恩脫下外衣，換上黑長袍。
Ron's were a bit short forhim, you could see his trainers underneath them.
羅恩的長袍短了點兒，下邊露出了他那雙球鞋。
A voice echoed through thetrain: "We will be reaching Hogwarts in five minutes' time.
「再過五分鐘列車就要到達霍格沃茨了。
Please leave your luggage onthe train, it will be taken to the school separately."
請將你們的行李留在車上，我們會替你們送到學校去的。」這聲音在列車上迴蕩。
Harry's stomach lurched withnerves and Ron, he saw, looked pale under his freckles.
哈利緊張得胃裡的東西直往上翻，他看見羅恩雀斑下面的臉色也發白了。
They crammed their pocketswith the last of the sweets and joined the crowd thronging the corridor.
他們把剩下的糖果塞進衣袋，就隨著過道上的人流朝前湧去。
The train slowed right downand finally stopped.
列車放慢了速度，最終停了下來。
People pushed their way towardthe door and out on to a tiny, dark platform.
大家推搡著湧向車門，來到一個又黑又小的站臺上。
Harry shivered in the coldnight air.
夜裡的寒氣使哈利打了個寒噤。
Then a lamp came bobbing overthe heads of the students, and Harry heard a familiar voice: "Firs' years!Firs' years over here! All right there, Harry?"
接著一盞燈在學生們頭頂上晃動，哈利聽見一個熟悉的聲音在高喊：「一年級新生！一年級新生到這邊來！哈利，到這邊來，你好嗎？」
Hagrid's big hairy face beamedover the sea of heads.
在人頭攢動的一片人海之上，海格蓄著大鬍子的臉露著微笑。
"C'mon, follow me — anymore firs' years?
「來吧，跟我來，還有一年級新生嗎？
Mind your step, now! Firstyears follow me!"
當心你們腳底下，好了！一年級新生跟我來！」
Slipping and stumbling, theyfollowed Hagrid down what seemed to be a steep, narrow path
他們跟隨海格連滑帶溜，磕磕絆絆，似乎沿著一條陡峭狹窄的小路走下坡去。
It was so dark on either sideof them that Harry thought there must be thick trees there.
小路兩旁一片漆黑，哈利心裡想這兩邊應該是茂密的樹林吧。
Nobody spoke much.
沒有人說話。
Neville, the boy who keptlosing his toad, sniffed once or twice.
只有丟失蟾蜍的那個男孩偶爾吸一兩下鼻子。
"Yeh'll get yer firs'sight o' Hogwarts in a sec," Hagrid called over his shoulder, "jus'round this bend here."
「拐過這個彎，你們馬上就要第一次看到霍格沃茨了。」海格回頭喊道。
There was a loud "Oooooh!"
接著是一陣嘹亮的「噢——！」
The narrow path had openedsuddenly onto the edge of a great black lake.
狹窄的小路盡頭突然展開了一片黑色的湖泊。
Perched atop a high mountainon the other side, its windows sparkling in the starry sky, was a vast castlewith many turrets and towers.
湖對岸高高的山坡上聳立著一座巍峨的城堡，城堡上塔尖林立，一扇扇窗口在星空下閃爍。
"No more'n four to aboat!" Hagrid called, pointing to a fleet of little boats sitting in thewater by the shore.
「每條船不能超過四人！」海格指著泊在岸邊的一隊小船大聲說。
Harry and Ron were followedinto their boat by Neville and Hermione.
哈利和羅恩上了小船，納威和赫敏也跟著上來了。
"Everyone in?"shouted Hagrid, who had a boat to himself.
「都上船了嗎？」海格喊道，他自己一人乘一條船。
"Right then —FORWARD!"
「那好……前進咯！」
And the fleet of little boatsmoved off all at once, gliding across the lake, which was as smooth as glass.
一隊小船即刻划過波平如鏡的湖面向前駛去。
Everyone was silent, staringup at the great castle overhead.
大家都沉默無語，凝視著高入雲天的巨大城堡。
It towered over them as theysailed nearer and nearer to the cliff on which it stood.
當他們臨近城堡所在的懸崖時，那城堡仿佛聳立在他們頭頂上空。
"Heads down!" yelledHagrid as the first boats reached the cliff; they all bent their heads and thelittle boats carried them through a curtain of ivy which hid a wide opening inthe cliff face.
「低頭！」當第一批小船駛近峭壁時，海格大聲喊道。大家都低下頭來，小船載著他們穿過覆蓋山崖正面的常春藤帳幔，來到隱秘的開闊入口。
They were carried along a darktunnel, which seemed to be taking them right underneath the castle, until theyreached a kind of underground harbor, where they clambered out onto rocks andpebbles.
他們沿著一條漆黑的隧道似乎來到了城堡地下，最後到達了一個類似地下碼頭的地方，然後又攀上一片碎石和小鵝卵石的地面。
"Oy, you there! Is thisyour toad?" said Hagrid, who was checking the boats as people climbed outof them.

"Trevor!" criedNeville blissfully, holding out his hands.
「萊福！」納威伸出雙臂欣喜若狂地喊道。
Then they clambered up apassageway in the rock after Hagrid's lamp, coming out at last onto smooth,damp grass right in the shadow of the castle.
之後他們在海格提燈的燈光照耀下攀上山巖中的一條隧道，最後終於到達了城堡陰影下的一處平坦潮溼的草地。
They walked up a flight ofstone steps and crowded around the huge, oak front door.
大家攀上一段石階，聚在一扇巨大的橡木門前。
"Everyone here? Youthere, still got yer toad?"
「都到齊了嗎？你看看，你的蟾蜍還在吧？」
Hagrid raised a gigantic fistand knocked three times on the castle door.
海格舉起一隻碩大的拳頭，往城堡大門上敲了三下。
