#AmericanAnimation&Comics – The Golden Age of American Comic Books
Comic strips have been published with newspapers and magazines in America for over 100 years. A comic strip is a sequence of drawings arranged in interrelated panels used for humor or to tell a story, with text in balloons and captions. On Sundays, many American newspapers traditionally included a special color section knows as the 「funny papers」 for popular comic strips. In the 1920s, comic strips began to feature not only humor but also adventure stories, and in the 1930s the first comic books, which were a collection of comic strips, became part of American popular culture. Many consider the American comic books from the late 1930s to 1950s as the golden age – during this time modern comic books were published and the superhero archetype developed, including many well-known characters, Superman, Batman, Captain Marvel, Captain America and Wonder Woman. Detective Comics, the predecessor of today’s DC Comics, and Timely Comics, the predecessor of today’s Marvel Comics enjoyed wide popularity in the 1940s for their superheroes that battled the Axis powers of World War II. After the War, the popularity of superhero comics waned and comic books diversified into new genres. Yet today, many of the superheroes from the golden age are well-remembered. Who is your favorite superhero from the golden age? Remember to please post your questions for cartoon experts from the National Cartoonists Society before June 9th.
