它結合了

黑人福音音樂（Gospel Music）

節奏藍調（R&B）

爵士（Jazz）

等音樂流派

通過節奏藍調的加入

讓傳統福音音樂其更加世俗化

它有鮮明的節奏、拍掌、即興肢體動作，此外，獨唱與伴唱之間的對唱、緊繃的發聲技巧也是其主要特色。靈魂音樂幾乎可以稱作是沒有宗教的宗教的音樂。
