other, the other, another 與others 是初中乃至高中的重點，但在做題時，總有學生弄混，下面分析它們的區別。
(1) 指複數時，若泛指用 other(後接複數名詞)，若特指某一範圍內的人或物用 the other(後接複數名詞)：
There are other ways of doing it. 做這事還有其他的辦法。
Where are the other students of our class? 我們班其他同學在哪裡?
(2) others 永遠表示複數意義，且其後不能再接名詞。其用法大致相當於「other+複數名詞」，同樣地 the others 大致相當於「the other＋複數名詞」： Show me some others. 再拿一些給我看。
He died so that others might live. 他犧牲了自己使別人能夠活下來。
I was tired, and so were the others. 我累了，其他人也一樣。
He is more careful than the others. 他比其他人更仔細。
Lei Feng is always ready to help others.雷鋒總是樂於助人。
(3) another一般只能表單數，且其後接名詞時也只能接單數名詞。但是若其後有數詞或 few 修飾時，則也可接複數名詞：
Have another piece of cake. 再吃一塊蛋糕。
I』ve got another three minutes. 我還有三分鐘。
(4) 與 some 對比使用時，用 others(此時與 some 同義)：
Some say yes, and others say no. 有人說對，有人說不對。
(5) 表示兩者中的一個如何，另一個如何，可用 one...the other...。如：
We have two daughter. One is a teacher, the other is a doctor.
These shoes do not match; one is large and the other is small. 這雙鞋不相配，一隻大，一隻小。
(6) the other 後接 day, night 等時間名詞時，表示「幾天前，幾天前的一個晚上」等。如： I bought a pair of sports shoes the other day. 前幾天我買了雙運動鞋。
1. other可作形容詞或代詞，做形容詞時，意思是「別的，其他」，泛指「其他的（人或物）」。other後接單複數均可，other one或other two students.
如：Do you have any other question(s)? 你還有其他問題嗎？
Ask some other people. 問問別人吧！
Put it in your other hand. 把它放在你另一隻手裡。
2. the other指兩個人或物中的一個時，只能用the other，不能用another，此時的other作代詞。
如：He has two daughters. One is a nurse, the other is a worker.
他有兩個女兒，一個是護士，另一個是工人。
the other後可加單數名詞，也可加複數名詞，此時的other作形容詞。如：On the other side of the street，there is a tall tree. 在街道的另一邊，有一棵大樹。
Mary is much taller than the other girls. 瑪麗比其他的女孩高得多。He lives on the other side of the river. 他住在河的對岸。
3.others是other的複數形式，泛指「另外幾個」，「其餘的」。在句中可作主語、賓語。
如：Some of us like singing and dancing, others go in for sports. 我們一些人喜歡唱歌和跳舞，其餘的從事體育活動。
Give me some others, please. 請給我別的東西吧！
There are no others. 沒有別的了。
4.the others意思是「其他東西，其餘的人」。特指某一範圍內的「其他的（人或物）」。是the other 的複數形式。
如：Two boys will go to the zoo, and the others will stay at home. 兩個男孩將去動物園，其餘的留在家裡。
the others=the other +複數名詞，這在第2條中已經有所介紹。
5.another=an+ other，既可作形容詞，也可作代詞，只能用於三個或更多的人或物，泛指同類事 物中的三者或三者以上的「另一個」，只能代替或修飾單數可數名詞。
如： I don’t like this one. Please show me another. 我不喜歡這一個，請給我看看另一個。
I have three daughters. One is a nurse, another is a teacher and another is a worker.
我有三個女兒。一個是護士，另一個是教師，還有一個是工人。
相關詞組： one… the other 只有兩個
some… the others 有三個以上
some… others，
others… others = other people/things
the others = the rest 剩餘的全部
小結： 1) 泛指另一個用another。
2) 一定範圍內兩人(物)，一個用one，另一個用the other。
3) 一定範圍內三者，一個用one，另一個用one (another)，第三個可用the other，a third。
4) 一定範圍內，除去一部分人/物，剩餘的全部用the others。
5) 泛指別的人或物時，用others當在一定範圍內，除去一部分後
