On Sept 11 afternoon, I interviewed Liu via telephone. He shared the interesting, lesser-known stories about his childhood in the studio's neighborhood.
9月11日下午,我電話採訪了劉燁,也得以聽聞他鮮為人知的「長影子弟」往事。
Earlier this year, Liu was scheduled to shoot Shou Dao Ren(The Island Guardian), a true story adapted from the role model Wang Jicai, in Fujian province in mid-February. But the plan was halted by the pandemic, leaving him more time to spend with family as well as doing more exercise to stay fit.
今年早些時候,劉燁本來是要在2月中旬,前往福建拍攝根據「時代楷模」王繼才真實事件改編的影片《守島人》。因為突如其來的疫情,他有了更多陪伴家人和健身的時間。
Liu's father is a lighting technician and his mother works as an accountant at the Changchun Film Studio's labor union. As a "perk" of her job, Liu's mother often got leftover tickets, thus making theatergoing a regular entertainment for Liu at a young age. His favorite childhood movie is Tunnel Warfare.
劉燁說他小時候在長影的大院裡長大,父親是燈光師,母親是工會的會計。因為工會經常會有些發剩下的電影票,劉燁童年裡最幸福的時光,就是經常有免費電影看,而那時候,他最喜歡的影片是《地道戰》。
"The studio covers a huge area, with its facilities including schools and a hospital. My schools and 'playgrounds' are all located inside the studio. Actually, I considered the soundstages as my playgrounds, where I could see the props, such as stunt dummies," recalls Liu.
「長影的規模特別大,裡面有學校、有醫院。我上學也在電影廠裡上,放學了也在裡頭玩。我小時候的遊樂場都是電影廠裡常用的攝影棚,經常會看到那些用於製作電影的道具、假人等等。」劉燁在電話那頭回憶起自己的童年,是滿滿的幸福感。
As New China's first studio, Changchun Film Studio is hailed as the cradle for Chinese films. Over more than half a century, the studio has produced more than 900 features, and translated over 1,000 foreign films. Most influential classics that have remained etched in mind of generations of Chinese include Five Golden Flowers,Heroic Sons and Daughters,Third Sister Liu andDong Cunrui.
作為新中國第一家電影製片廠,長影堪稱新中國電影的搖籃,曾先後拍攝故事影片900多部,譯製各國影片1000多部。其中,《五朵金花》《英雄兒女》《劉三姐》和《董存瑞》等一大批優秀作品,都影響了幾代人的成長。
From Postmen in The Mountains to Cock and Bull, Liu has portrayed various impressive roles in around 50 films in his career spanning over 20 years.
從《那人那山那狗》到《追兇者也》,劉燁從影二十載,拍攝約50部影片,在大銀幕上塑造了一個又一個迥然不同、又令人印象深刻的經典角色。
A graduate from The Central Academy of Drama, Liu has witnessed the prosperous development of China cinema. From domestic filmmakers' early effort to pursue shooting academic art-house titles to their shift to produce big-budget blockbusters in early 2000s, Liu believes Chinese cinema is now in a new era with the film industry's production procedure being more mature.
從中戲一路走來,劉燁也見證了中國電影產業的蓬勃發展,親身經歷了中國電影如何從最初的學院派進入大片時代,又到了如今製片流程更為清晰化的產業時代。
"The cinema construction and screens are expanding rapidly, as well as the rise of film budgets. All these are the biggest changes. Unlike the past when cinema was more pure auteur works, it is now catering to the market," he says.
「現在影院建設特別快,銀幕數增加也很快,電影投資也大了很多,這些我都感覺變化特別大。在以前,電影可能更純粹些;現在,電影更市場化。」他如是感受。
Speaking about the unprecedented expansion of Chinese film industry over recent years, Liu says he was once confused, as he was forced to care more about the investment and market return instead of just focusing on cinematic creation. But he has adjusted, believing the future for Chinese cinema will be promising.
談起這些年中國電影的狂飆猛進,劉燁說他曾經也有過迷茫的時刻,也曾經歷過談電影合作,不僅僅是探討電影故事本身,而更多需要去關注資本層面的數字問題。但他現在也調整好了心態,對中國電影的未來充滿期待。
"Cinema has a forever charm. I believe Chinese cinema will open a new chapter to rise to the prosperity," he says.
「電影的魅力是永遠的,我相信中國電影會再次迎來它的繁榮。」
Speaking about his hometown, Changchun, Liu says he thinks the city has its unique sources, ranging from the cinematic legacy to film culture and talent as well as the cultivation of young filmmakers, and hopes it could again become the new cradle of Chinese cinema.
說起長春,「東北人」劉燁滿是自豪,認為自己的家鄉在電影傳統、文化底蘊、電影技術人才的儲備和青年電影人的培養方面都有優勢,也希望長春能成為中國電影的「新搖籃」。
Just like many fellow filmmakers at his age, Liu is considering about shifting his focus from acting to directing. A surprise: he says he wishes to helm an adult-oriented fairy tale, as one of his favorite films is Tim Burton's Big Fish.
和許多同齡人一樣,劉燁如今也在琢磨「演而優則導」的工作。令人意外的是,他因為特別喜歡蒂姆·伯頓的奇幻片《大魚》,很希望能執導一部另類成人童話風格影片。
去年,曾傳出消息,劉燁要執導他的首部影片《我的傭兵生涯》,但他說因為疫情的緣故,一些原本要在境外進行的拍攝計劃,也只能暫時擱置。
看來,更值得期待的,將是劉燁心心念念的奇幻之作,而這次長春之行,當再次看到童年光陰裡那些熟悉而又久違了的景致,不知他是否會有一些奇幻的靈感?
