Chapter One
Jack was dreaming that a bird was pecking his bedroom window with its peak. Tap, tap, tap, … He opened his eyes, and found that it was Ditanthus the unicorn that was tapping his window with its horn. Jack was quickly wide awake.
The magic tree house must be back.
He quickly got dressed, grabbed his backpack, and rushed into Annie’s bedroom. He shook her gently. Annie opened her eyes sleepily. She said: 「What’s wrong?」
「The magic tree house is back! Ditanthus is waiting for us!」
Annie jumped up.
「Quick! Before mum and dad wake up. Meet you down the porch.」
Jack and Annie ran down the street and into the Frog Creek woods. They wove between the trees, their boots crunching through the fallen leaves.
Jack stopped. The magic tree house tugged between two branches of the tallest oak in the woods.
Ditanthus was peeking out the tree house window.
Annie ran to the robe ladder and started up. Jack followed her.
When they climbed into the tree house, Annie hugged the unicorn: 「Ditanthus! I have always been missing you!」
Jack picked up a scroll of parchment paper lying on the floor, unrolled it, and read aloud:
Dear Jack and Annie of Frog Creek, A very severe epidemic outbreaks in Camelot. We want you to help find a guide book for hospital and community engagement. If your mission is done, please come to Camelot.
Beside Ditanthus’s feet was a guide book. The cover showed a modern and clean city. The title was 2019-Novel Coronavirus in Wuhan.
「Wuhan? China? 」 said Annie, 「I love China. Remember the good times with the pandas?」
「Yeah, I love it too.」 said Jack. 「But, a novel type of … virus?」 Annie piped up.
「I will look it up in the research book.」
Jack read: 「2019-Novel Coronavirus is a new type of coronavirus. It has emerged from the city of Wu in China. Within weeks it has spread to several countries and has killed multiple people. It is an infectious disease. The city of Wuhan is in quarantine. The Chinese government has been engaging in the epidemic prevention and control.」
「In quarantine? Then the people in Wuhan must be desperate for help. Let us go right away and see what we can help.」 As Annie said she pointed to the book and shouted: 「I wish we could go there!」
The wind started to blow.
The tree house started to spin.
It spun faster and faster.
Then everything was still.
Absolutely still.
Chapter Two
Jack opened his eyes.
He looked out the window. The tree house had landed on a rooftop of a building. They were in plastic white bulky suit, wearing googles and surgical masks and disposable gloves.
「Are we wearing space suits? Where are we? Yikes, I can hardly breathe with this mask on! And it feels stuffy and scratchy in this suit!」
Jack opened the guide book and turned to the page that showed the rooftop of a tall building. He read aloud:
Wuhan Jin-yin-tan Hospital is a professional medical institution of treating infectious diseases. It is one of the designated hospitals to care for 2019-nCoV infected patients.
「So, we are supposed to be wearing protective suits.」 Jack said.
He went on to read:
2019-nCoV spread from mammals to humans. It is highly infectious. It can be transmitted between humans. It can spread through tiny droplets in salvia when people talk, laugh, cough or sneeze. It can remain on the things hands touched. Frontline health workers have to wear protective suit, ordinary people have to wear mask and wash hands regularly.
「Highly infectious!」 Jack gasped.
「Yikes, that’s horrible!」 Annie’s voice was shaky, 「but its name is funny, CORONA?」
Jack turned to the page with the picture of the virus. He read:
Corona means crown in Spanish. This type of virus has crown-like spikes on its body. So Corona refers to the virus’s distinctive shape.
「Yikes, beautiful appearance, evil in nature.」 Annie said.
They looked down from the roof and saw a group of medical workers in protective suit pushing a trolley with a patient lying on it into the hospital hastily.
「It seems that the nurses are under a ton’s pressure. Let’s go down and check the situation out.」 Annie said.
Before Jack could respond, Annie climbed onto the unicorn and pulled Jack onto its back. The unicorn jumped off the roof, and landed in front of the gate of the building. When Jack packed the book in his backpack, he noticed a cloak inside the backpack. There was a sign on it: when Ditanthus enters the hospital, put the cloak on him, then no one would see him.
Annie took the cloak and put it on the unicorn. The unicorn turned invisible at once. 「We have to help ——.Let’s go inside. Ditanthus, follow us!」
「Wait!」 said Jack, 「You can’t help! A kid can’t help …」
「Don’t forget —— we have to find a guide book for Merlin!」 Jack called in a loud whisper. 「hospital and community engagement!」
「hospital …」 Jack murmured.
Well, this was a hospital.
Jack hurried to catch up with Annie.
He caught up Annie. Together, they walked silently into the hospital.
Chapter Three
It was a long corridor. There were wards one by one on both sides. There was a strong smell of disinfection in the air. They stopped in front of a ward and peeked through the door window: a patient with mask lying in bed looked miserable. His eyes were tightly closed, keeping coughing. It seemed that he could barely breathe.
「So many patients.」 Said Jack.
「It sure is,」 said Annie, 「maybe we can be nurses, like what we did in the Civil War.」
「OK —— 」 said Jack irresolutely,「but we have a mission ——」
A medical worker with protective suit on came toward them. The medical worker’s eyes looked terribly tired.
「Where are you from?」 the worker asked.
Well, the voice showed that this was a female medical worker.
「We are Jack and Annie from Frog Creek,」 said Annie, 「We』d like to volunteer as nurses.」
The young nurse didn’t seem at all surprised.
「We could certainly use some help,」 she said, sighing. 「We are short of hands.」
The nurse continued, 「There is a 1-year-old baby patient in the ward at the end of the corridor on the right side. The sick baby has been isolated from his parents. He kept crying, and we can’t feed him the medicine.」
「What can we do?」 asked Jack.
「Just try to give him comfort,」 the nurse said, 「Here is a guide book that list things that can help with medical care.」
「Thank you!」 Jack and Annie said at the same time.
As the nurse walked away, Annie said: 「this is the thing that Merlin wanted us to find.」
They rushed to the baby’s ward. A nurse was holding the baby in her arms. The baby was crying heavily. He was waving his arms wildly in the air. The nurse had no way to calm the baby down.
Annie said to Jack: 「maybe Ditanthus could help make the baby happy.」
Jacked nodded and he quickly pulled the cloak off from Ditanthus.
The unicorn had broad mild-white chest, graceful neck, a long, spiraled horn rising from the middle of his forehead. His whole body seemed to be glimmered with glows.
The baby noticed Ditanthus and was stunned. Just the moment, he smiled through tears. As the baby laughed happily, the nurse squeezed the medical syrup into his mouth.
They led Ditanthus around the hospital. The unicorn brought joys and happiness to all the patients.
When they were outside the hospital, they stopped and panted.
「Well done, Ditanthus! You have lessened their sorrows and given them happiness. Wish them good luck!」 said Annie.
「Yeah, and our mission is accomplished.」 said Jack, 「and it is said in this guide book that we have to take off the protective suits in a designated disinfected room before leaving.」
「Yes, we have to take off these contaminated suits,」 said Annie.
As they were talking, the nurse they firstly met in the corridor came over, 「Thank you! You are brave. You have given a helping hand. The disinfected room is by the side of the building gate. You can take off the suits and have a rest there.」
「It’s our pleasure. Take good care of yourself. 」 Jack and Annie said.
「Are you going home? The public transportation has been halted. How will you go back home?」 the nurse asked.
「Don’t worry. We … um … live nearby.」 Said Annie, 「Bye-bye!」
「Bye-bye! Remember to wear a mask and gloves when you leave.」 Said the nurse.
As Jack and Annie were taking off the protective suit, Jack said: 「Wait a moment! Our mission is just half finished, we have to find the community engagement.」
In the disinfected room, Jack and Annie put the mask and gloves on, and headed to the gate.
Suddenly, they heard a howling outside the hospital’s gate.
Chapter Four
「Jack, did you hear a howling? It sounded like a puppy.」 Annie charged at the gate.
「A dog? Oh, no! Mammals!」 thought Jack.
Jack shouted loudly at Annie: 「Stop! Don’t touch! This virus transmit among mammals.」
When he rushed to the gate, he saw Annie was holding a white fluffy puppy in her arms. It was shivering with fear and cold.
「Oh, no!」 Jacked moaned. He took out their research book and flipped quickly:
There is no evidence that 2019-nCoV can spread from pet cats or dogs to humans. But still many pets were deserted due to people’s panic.
Jack sighed with relief.
Annie stroke the puppy’s furry back, and said softly: 「it’s okey now, baby!」
Jack looked around: the street was quiet and empty, all the shops were closed, there were no cars, no buses and no folks.
Jack said: 「All the people have been quarantining themselves in their home. This must be a stray dog.」
「Oh, poor thing. Where is your home?」 Annie said compassionately.
「It is impossible to find its home. We have to send it to an animal shelter temporarily.」
「Check the research book, Jack! See where the shelter is.」 Annie said eagerly.
Jack flipped through pages and found a map of the city. 「There is a shelter on No. 187, Jianghan Road. But it is far from here. How can we get there as there is no public transportation?」 Jack said.
「Ditanthus! Ditanthus can take us there!」 Annied blurted out.
They climbed on Ditanthus. His long strides were so light and graceful, Jack could hardly feel the movement. As Ditanthus trotted down the empty street, Jack felt he was riding a steady boat.
Not for long, they arrived at the door of the animal shelter on Jianghan Road. They entered the shelter. It was a large but crowded room. It was filled with pet cages of various sizes. Annie held the puppy, went up to the counter, and saw a lady dressed like vet injecting a cat behind the counter. Annie asked:
「Excuse me, Ma』am! We found a stray dog and can’t find its home. It is hungry, cold and frightened. We shall be grateful to you if you could take it.」
「Certainly! We are open to receive stays as long as we can handle.」 The lady replied in a fatigue but gentle voice. She turned over and took the puppy from Annie’s hand. As she stroke the puppy, she said to herself: 「poor thing. Let’s eat something first, then have a nice bath and a thorough physical examination.」
「Thank you! You have a kind and mercy heart! Wish you all the best!」 Jack and Annie waved googbye to the shelter keeper. At the gate, they saw a stand full of booklets, titled 2019-nCoV community engagement.
They smiled at each other, turned around, and asked: 「could we have a copy of this booklet?」
「Sure, take one with you. It teaches what we shall do to deal with this epidemic in a community.」
「Thank you! Ma』am!」 Jack and Annie left the shelter cheerfully.
Annie said: 「This time, our mission has really been finished. And we have offered a lot of help.」 She then turned to the unicorn: 「Good job, Ditanthus!」
「Now it is time to meet Merlin, Morgan and Penny and all the others in Camelot.」 Jack said.
Then they climbed on the unicorn, and rode back to the hospital. With a giant leap, the unicorn landed gracefully beside the tree house on the rooftop of the hospital. Jack and Annie went into the tree house and pointed at the word Camelot.
The wind started to blow.
The tree house began to spin.
It spun faster and faster.
Then everything was still.
Absolutely still.
Chapter Five
「We are in Camelot,」 said Annie, looking out the window.
The house landed in an apple tree in an orchard. In the near distance, castle towers rose into the gray sky.
「Jack! Annie!」
Teddy and Kathleen were running through the orchard, between the trees, over fallen withered yellow leaves.
Jack and Annie waved at them.
「We have found the booklet of hospital and community engagement.」 Annie said.
「Hurry!」 said Teddy.
Kathleen and Teddy led the way between the trees to a small wooden cottage at the edge of the orchard.
Jack knocked at the door. A tall, elegant woman wearing a white-colored cloak and a man in a dark blue robe stepped out.
「Merlin! Morgan!」 whispered Jack.
「They look tired.」 Whispered Annie.
「The epidemic in Camelot is very deadly now. Thousands and thousands people died. All the plants in my secret garden didn’t work in curing the sick people.」 Morgan sighed wearily.
「Vaccines can effectively treat virus infections in humans. But, before vaccines are licensed, the only possible way is to block the receptor the viruses use to infect humans.」 Jack said.
「In order to prevent the spreading of epidemic, hospital and community engagement is very important. And these two booklets we obtained in Wuhan offered the instructions.」 Annie said.
Morgan and Merlin smiled. They seemed less sad and weary now.
「We will study the booklets right away, and take effective measures immediately. Thank you, Jack! Thank you, Annie! You have brought hope for Camelot.」 Said Merlin.
「You have to go home now,」 said Morgan, 「I will speed you back to Frog Creek woods.」
Then Morgan raised her hands, there was a roar, a bright light flashed, Jack and Annie were in front of the porch of their house.
Annie grinned: 「Thank you, Morgan, to speed us back!」
「Quick, get in, before mum and dad wakes up.」 Jack said.
The end.
