從前有一棵樹。。。
and she loved a little boy.
她愛一個小男孩
And everyday the boy would come
孩子每天都會跑來
收集她的葉子
and make them into crowns
把葉子編成皇冠
and play king of the forest.
想像自己就是森林之王
He would climb up her trunk
他常常爬上樹幹
and swing from her branches
在樹枝上蕩鞦韆
and eat apples.
吃樹上結的蘋果
And they would play hide-and-go-seek.
同大樹捉迷藏
And when he was tired,
累了的時候，
he would sleep in her shade.
就在樹蔭裡睡覺
And the boy loved the tree….
男孩愛這棵樹。。。
very much.
很愛很愛
And the tree was happy.
大樹很快樂
日子一天天過去
And the boy grew older.
And the tree was often alone.
Then one day the boy came to the tree
有一天，男孩來到大樹下
and the tree said, 「Come, Boy, come and
樹說：「來啊，孩子，來，
climb up my trunk and swing from my branches
爬上我的樹幹，抓著我的樹枝蕩鞦韆
and eat apples and play in my
吃吃蘋果
shade and be happy.」
在樹蔭下玩耍，快快樂樂的。「
「I am too big to climb and play」 said the boy.
我不是小孩子了，我不要爬樹和玩耍，」男孩說
「I want to buy things and have fun.
「我要買東西來玩，
I want some money」
我要錢」
「I’m sorry,」 said the tree,
「真抱歉，」樹說：
「but I have no money.
「我沒有錢
I have only leaves and apples.
我只有樹葉和蘋果。
Take my apples, Boy, and sell them in the city.
孩子，拿我的蘋果到城裡去賣
Then you will have money and
這樣，你就會有錢
you will be happy.」
就會快樂。」
And so the boy climbed up the tree
於是，男孩爬到樹上
and gathered her apples
摘下她的蘋果
and carried them away.
把蘋果統統帶走了
And the tree was happy.
大樹好快來。
But the boy stayed away for a long time….
男孩好久都沒有再來。。。
and the tree was sad.
樹好傷心。
And then one day the boy came back
有一天，男孩回來了
and the tree shook with joy
大樹高興的發抖
and she said, 「Come, Boy, climb up my trunk
她說：「來啊，孩子，爬上我的樹幹
and swing from my branches and be happy.」
抓著我的樹枝蕩鞦韆，快快樂樂的。」
「I am too busy to climb trees,」 said the boy.
"我太忙，沒時間爬樹。「男孩說
「I want a house to keep me warm,」 he said.
」我想要一間房子保暖。「他說
「I want a wife and I want children,
我想要妻子和小孩
and so I need a house.
所以我需要一間房子，
Can you give me a house ?」
你可以給我一間房子嗎？」
」 I have no house,」 said the tree.
「我沒有房子，」樹說
「The forest is my house,
「森林就是我的房子，
but you may cut off my branches
不過，你可以砍下我的樹枝
and build ahouse.
去蓋房子
Then you will be happy.」
這樣你就會很快來。」
And so the boy cut off her branches
於是，男孩砍下了她所有的樹枝
and carried them away
拿去
to build his house.
蓋房子。
And the tree was happy.
樹很快樂
But the boy stayed away for a long time.
可是，男孩好久都沒有再來。
And when he came back,
所以當男孩再回來的時候
the tree was so happy
樹太開心了
she could hardly speak.
開心得幾乎說不出話來。
「Come, Boy,」 she whispered,
「來啊，孩子，」她輕輕地說
「come and play.」
「過來，過來，來玩啊！」
「I am too old and sad to play,」said the boy.
「我又老又傷心，玩不動了」男孩說
「I want a boat that will
"我想要一條船
take me far away from here.
可以帶我遠離這裡。
Can you give me a boat?」
你可以給我一條船嗎？「
「Cut down my trunk
」砍下我地樹幹
and make a boat,」 said the tree.
去造一條船吧！樹說
「Then you can sail away…
「這樣，你就可以遠航。。。
and be happy.」
你就會很快樂。」
And so the boy cut down her trunk
於是，男孩砍下了她地樹幹
and made a boat and sailed away.
造了一條船，坐船走了。
And the tree was happy
樹很快樂
… but not really.
可是心裡。。。。
And after a long time
過了好久好久
the boy came back again.
男孩又再回來了。
「I am sorry, Boy,」
「我很抱歉，孩子」
said the tree,」 but I have nothing left to give you –
樹說：「我已經沒有東西可以給你了
My apples are gon『e.」
」我地蘋果沒有了。
「My teeth are too weak for apples,」
「我地牙齒咬不動蘋果了
said the boy.
男孩說。
「My branches are gone,」 said the tree. 」
」我地樹枝沒有了，樹說
You cannot swing on them – 」
你不能再上面蕩鞦韆了。」
「I am too old to swing
on branches,」 said the boy.
「我太老了，不能在樹枝上蕩鞦韆。」男孩說
「My trunk is gone, 」 said the tree.「You cannot climb – 」
「我地樹幹沒有了，你不能爬」樹說
「I am too tired to climb」 said the boy.
」我太累了，爬不動了。「
「I am sorry,」 sighed the tree.
」我很抱歉，「樹嘆了一口氣。
「I wish that I could give you something….
」我真希望我能給你什麼。。。
but I have nothing left.
可是我什麼都沒有了
I am just an old stump.
只剩下一根老樹樁
I am sorry….」
我很抱歉。。。
「I don’t need very much now,」 said the boy.
"我現在要地不多，」 男孩說
「just a quiet place to sit and rest.
「只要一個安靜，可以坐著休息地地方
I am very tired.」
我好累好累。」
「Well,」 said the tree, straightening herself up as much as she could,
「好啊，」樹一邊說，一邊挺直身子
「well, an old stump is good for sitting and resting
「正好啊，老樹樁是最適合坐下來休息地地方
Come, Boy, sit down. Sit down and rest.」
坐啊，孩子，坐下來休息
And the boy did.
男孩坐了下來
And the tree was happy.
