希波克拉底，前460年——前370年，為古希臘伯裡克利時代的醫師，被西方尊為「醫學之父」，西方醫學奠基人。《希波克拉底誓言》是希波克拉底警誡人類的古希臘職業道德的聖典，他向醫學界發出的行業道德倡議書，是從醫人員入學第一課要學的重要內容，也是全社會所有職業人員言行自律的要求。

把我的一生獻給人道主義服務。為了病人的利益，我將採取一切必要的診斷和治療的措施，同時，避免過度治療。我將記住我永遠是社會的一員，對社會也有一定的責任。憑著良心和我的尊嚴行使我的職業，首先考慮病人人的健康。凡是病人的秘密我均予以尊重。儘自己一切能力維護醫務職業的光榮和崇高傳統。
我一定拿出我最精湛的醫術，當看到他們身體康復的時候我會倍感愉快。我也將以最大的努力尊重從胎兒開始的人的生命，絕不利用我的醫學知識違背法律。我莊嚴地、自主地，並以我的名譽作出上述保證。

I swear by Apollo, the healer, Asclepius, Akso, and Panacea, and I take to witness all the gods, all the goddesses, to keep according to my ability and my judgment, the following Oath and agreement: To consider dear to me, as my parents, him who taught me this art; to live in common with him and, if necessary, to share my goods with him; To look upon his children as my own brothers, to teach them this art.
I will prescribe regimens for the good of my patients according to my ability and my judgment andnever do harm to anyone.
I will not give a lethal drug to anyone if I am asked, nor will I advise such a plan; and similarly I will not give a woman a pessary to cause an abortion.
But I will preserve the purity of my life and my arts.
I will not cut for stone, even for patients in whom the disease is manifest; I will leave this operation to be performed by practitioners, specialists in this art.
In every house where I come I will enter only for the good of my patients, keeping myself far from all intentional ill-doing and all seduction and especially from the pleasures of love with women or with men, be they free or slaves.
All that may come to my knowledge in the exercise of my profession or in daily commerce with men, which ought not to be spread abroad, I will keep secret and will never reveal.
If I keep this oath faithfully, may I enjoy my life and practice my art, respected by all men and in all times; but if I swerve from it or violate it, may the reverse be my lot.

注:阿克索(Ακεσο，Akso)是希臘神話中的健康女神，其形象為一個年輕女子，手持裝有蛇的碗。她在希臘宗教中是主司衛生安全、醫藥治療的醫藥之神，她在西方文學的形象相當於中國傳說中的扁鵲。最早對她進行崇拜的地方是科林斯以西的提塔尼(Titane)，並和醫神阿斯克勒庇俄斯(Asclepius)同受崇拜。起初她和阿斯克勒庇俄斯之間並無特殊關係，但他們逐漸被看成夫婦。
在西方現代醫學體系中，"阿克索之碗"代表"藥學".右側為阿克索圖像。
希波克拉底誓言的另一個版本:

日內瓦宣言
在第二次世界大戰結束後審判了納粹分子醫生的罪行後，醫生的職業道德的特殊性和重要性重又引起了人們的重視。1948年世界醫學會 (WMA)在希波克拉底誓言的基礎上，制定了《日內瓦宣言》，作為醫生的道德規範.全文如下:
At the time of being admitted as a member of the medical profession
I solemnly pledge myself to consecrate my life to the service of humanity:
I will give to my teachers the respect and gratitude which is their due;
I will practice my profession with conscience and dignity;
The health and life of my patient will be my first consideration;
I will respect the secrets which are confided in me;
I will maintain by all means in my power, the honor and the noble traditions of the medical profession;
My colleagues will be my brothers:
I will not permit considerations of religion, nationality, race, party politics or social standing to intervene between my duty and my patient;
I will maintain the utmost respect for human life, from the time of its conception,
even under threat, I will not use my medical knowledge contrary to the laws of humanity;
