埃德加·愛倫·坡(Edgar Allan Poe)(1809～1849)，美國作家、詩人、編者與文學評論家，被尊崇是美國浪漫主義運動要角之一，以懸疑、驚悚小說最負盛名。愛倫·坡是美國的短篇小說家先鋒之一，並被公認是推理小說的創造者，甚至被視為科幻小說的共同催生者之一。他也是第一位眾所周知、僅以創作一職餬口的美國作家，並因此長期陷於經濟困難與不順遂之中。他的短篇小說大致分為三類：恐怖故事、謀殺疑案和科學難解之謎。他開創了偵探小說的先河，被稱為「偵探小說之父」。
