這是一部帶有政治主題的電視劇，講述的是一個冷血無情的美國國會議員及與他同樣野心勃勃的妻子在華盛頓白宮中運作權力的故事。主人公弗蘭克•安德伍德是美國國會眾議院多數黨黨鞭，是一個老謀深算的職業政客，他堅信新當選的美國總統及其幕僚背叛了他，於是發誓要將這一任總統趕下臺，他不擇手段展開一系列部署。

紙牌屋和其他美劇比，單詞明顯變多，而且變難，平均1個片段有近20個單詞，可是神奇的地方是：小編發現不看字幕竟然能聽懂紙牌屋第四季裡50%以上的對白。這得益於小編去年學習了紙牌屋第2季和第3季，有了一定的單詞量基礎，像常在紙牌屋出現的：congress，democracy，republican，bill，senate，等單詞，小編已經比較熟悉了，除了有了一定基礎的單詞量以外，最最重要的原因是：紙牌屋的對白非常清晰，發音的語氣也非常平和。因為這部劇裡的人都各懷鬼胎，但是表面都要裝作風平浪靜，所以，在說話的語氣上都不會有太大的情緒，而且很多都是國情諮文，競選演講，說話都比較慢，並且鏗鏘有力，這是給我們最好的福利，這樣就非常方便我們一句一句認認真真聽，基本上可以聽清，聽懂每一個單詞。
這是和老友記比最大的區別，因為老友記是一部情景生活劇，劇裡的人總會有不同的喜怒哀樂，所以有時候說話憤怒，激動，就會很含糊，再者，會吞吞吐吐，一句話總不說完，另外總有：I mean，You know，等插入語，顯得有的拖泥帶水，但是紙牌屋就不一樣了，每一句都是完整的句子，很少出現話沒說完被打斷的情況。所以，從書面閱讀的角度來看，紙牌屋對白的可讀性也更強。另外，再加上紙牌屋是正劇，很多對白都是白宮官方的發言稿，措詞神馬的都非常注意，也是大家學習寫作值得參考的劇。
紙牌屋的劇情基本就是圍繞著Frank當總統展開的，所以，基本是美國政治的一個全方位寫照，除了和美國國內相關的就業，石油，物價，教育，槍枝，婦女，種族等話題，其中也會牽涉到中國，俄羅斯，約旦，等國際問題，裡面的單詞也很全面，絕大多數都是考試用詞。
