A statement that Kuaishou sent to the Global Times on Thursday said the platform will seriously deal with videos containing excessive eating and drinking, while videos that feature fake eating and vomiting will be deleted and their accounts will be shut down. A spokesperson from the public relations department of the short-video platform Douyin told the Global Times on Thursday that the platform has taken measures to rectify livestreaming eating shows.
The spokesperson said that when users search for key terms such as "eating show" or "competitive eater", they will be informed to value food, and the platform will penalize those videos.
Social media platforms including Douyu and Sina Weibo made similar statements, promising to strengthen content reviews.「吃播」最初流行於韓國,後在全球流行。
A big eating show, or mukbang in Korean, is an online audiovisual show in which a vlogger consumes large quantities of food while interacting with the audience. These shows originated in South Korea and have become a worldwide trend.
Korea has traditionally had a food culture based on healthy eating practices and strict etiquette. This form of programming emphasizes the attractiveness of the person who prepares the food.
This eating performance from South Korea has also rapidly spread its influence to other Asian countries such as Japan and China where it became popular. In China, mukbang is called "chibo", in which mukbangers make their content into short videos and vlogs and upload them onto huge social media platforms like Weibo.

The main sources of income for mukbang hosts come from "rewards" from fans during the one to two hours of live-streaming. These are usually represented by 「flower」, 「luxury car」 or 「rocket」 icons, and then the broadcaster will share the revenue with the platforms. They can also get a signing fee from popular social media platforms or secure advertising for their shows.
In July 2018, the South Korean government announced that it would create and regulate mukbang guidelines by launching the National Obesity Management Comprehensive Measures. It would establish guidelines for mukbang because the practice could promote binge eating and harm the public health.

Wen Tiejun, a professor at the School of Agriculture and Rural Development at the Renmin University of China, said food waste in the past few years has been shocking, as it was once reported that the amount of food wasted in China was enough to feed 200 million people a year.
In June 2020, the United Nations warned that the world is on the verge of the worst food crisis in 50 years. The world's top three grain exporters — US, Brazil and India — are also the three countries most affected by COVID-19.
