Bebe Rexha剛剛推出了新歌The Way I Are (Dance With Somebody)。
不出所料，網上已經有人發問：為什麼是I are？不應該是I am嗎？
簡單回答：正確的、符合語法規則的搭配當然是I am，但流行歌曲很多時候不講語法，會「亂來」，這就是其中一例。
當然，簡單回答通常都比較無聊。不如聽我來八一八I are背後的故事。
歐美樂壇神級製作人Timbaland早在10年前就推出過一首熱門單曲，歌名也叫The Way I Are。
當時，很多老外也是第一次聽說這種用法，所以有人問了一樣的問題：

這樣的例子其實非常多，但因為不是標題，也不是最容易記住的副歌部分，往往被「埋沒」，所以很少有人注意到。
Timbaland的The Way I Are不一樣。因為讓I Are出現在了標題和反覆吟唱的副歌部分，所以很快引起了大家的關注。畢竟從人數上來說，黑人只是很小的群體，大多數native speakers不理解這種用法是很正常的。
經過Timbaland這麼一折騰，I are的奇葩搭配就火了，順利進入主流文化。
前幾年的熱門美劇Glee裡有一首原創歌曲叫Loser Like Me，裡面也有I are的用法。

再回到Bebe Rexha。作為一名創作型歌手，她會不時對深深影響過她的歌手或製作人致敬。這首The Way I Are (Dance With Somebody)顯然是對Timbaland和Whitney Houston致敬。Timbaland是The Way I Are的始作俑者，而Whitney Houston有一首經典單曲叫I Wanna Dance With Somebody。
Bebe Rexha新歌的「中心思想」就是那句：

再次印證了流行歌曲不按語法常理出牌這一點。正確的表達應該是：Doesn't matter who you are, just love me the way I am.
