Many people have a goal of publishing a book in their lifetime, and at Shanghai American School, sometimes our students achieve this even before graduation. Claire Ma 』18 has recently done just that, launching her book of poetry titled between the lines. Claire is working to spread the power and beauty of writing, and the process of using creativity and imagination to explore oneself through words.

you’re not strong like moving mountains

you’re strong like the first drop of april showers

you’re strong like spring falling into summer

you’re strong like a first love in september

and the first snowfall of december

you don’t have to be cold and hard to be strong

you can be soft and kind and warm

never let anyone tell you otherwise

Claire is described as 「a 17-year old generator of crazy ideas and wild tales.」 Her bio goes on to describe her childhood of exchanging her stories for rare Pokémon cards, chocolate chip cookies, and extra blue crayons. Now, we know Claire for tackling difficult issues head-on with her writing, while tempering it with humor and a deep commitment to dreaming big.

The publishing of between the lines has come in partnership with bookschina.com, and all of her earnings from the sale will go toward building the first public library in the area of Ma Wang Xiang, a rural part of Hunan.
