Field, Pitch andCourt
Where do we play sports? Usually ona very flat surface. One that is level, hence the term 「a level-playing field」.In Chinese, we use certain words to describe this place where we play sports.In English, it is just the same. The word for the playing surface changesdepending on the sport.
For indoor sports, usually played ona hard wooden surface, we use the word court. Basketball, volleyball, badmintonare all played on courts. Tennis, although outdoor, is also played on a court.
For outdoor sports, we use field orpitch. The term depends on the culture of the sport. American sports likeAmerican football and baseball are played on a field. British and Commonwealthsports like European football (soccer) and rugby are played on a pitch.
「Do you want to go down to thefootball pitch, see if there’s a pickup game?」
「I don’t feel like football. Howabout If we go to the basketball courts tonight?」

運動場，足球場以及網球場
我們都在哪裡打球呢？通常是一個平的地面。那是一個有標準的地面，因此我們稱之為「標準場地」。中文中，我們用特定的詞語來描述我們運動的場地。在英語中，也是一樣的。因為運動的不同，表達運動場地的單詞也不同。
在室內的運動，通常會在一個堅硬木製的地面上打球，我們用單詞court（球場）。籃球，排球，羽毛球都在這樣的球場裡打。網球，雖然是室外運動，但也用單詞court（網球場）表示它打球的場地。
對於室外運動，我們使用運動場（field）或者足球場（pitch）的場地。選擇哪個詞語，依賴於不同國家的運動文化而不同的使用。美國人踢美式足球和打棒球喜歡用運動場（field）。大英國協國家的人踢歐式足球和橄欖球喜歡用足球場（pitch）。
「你想去足球場嗎，看看足球場（pitch）裡會不會有人可以跟你臨時組隊一起打球（pickup game）？」
「我不想踢足球，那我們今晚去籃球場（court）怎麼樣？」
