Hello, everybody. This is Elliot from ETJ English, not Macaulay Culkin. So many of you guys have been writing comments saying, "Elliot, you look like that guy, that kid in Home Alone."

大家好,我是 ETJ English 頻道的埃利奧特,不是麥考利·卡爾金。你們很多人都在評論說,「埃利奧特,你看起來像那個傢伙,《小鬼當家》裡那個孩子。」

And while I'm sorry, I'm in no way related to him. You should see my brother though. He really does look like Macaulay Culkin.

很遺憾,我跟他一點兒關係都沒有。不過你應該看看我弟弟,他真的很像麥考利·卡爾金。

Today, in this video, we're going to be talking about a few different ways in which you can sound more British. Everything I talked about is pronunciation.

今天,在這段視頻中,我們將說說幾種讓你的口音更英式的技巧。我說的都是發音。

I'm a pronunciation teacher and I think there are a few different things which we can do to just sound a little bit more British, faster to make it happen faster. We need to focus on a few different things.

我是一名發音老師,我認為我們可以做一些不一樣的事情來讓發音聽起來更英式一點,更快學會它。我們需要關注一些不同的事情。

Now, these kind of four things that I'm gonna tell you today and not all the things you need to do, they're just a few just a few little ideas for you to practice and to think about when you're trying to sound a bit more British. The first thing that I would like to talk to you about is when we should and shouldn't use the letter or the sound /r/, the "r".

今天我要告訴大家四個技巧,不是說你們只需要做這四件事,而是當你們希望自己的口音聽起來更英式的時候,這些技巧能幫助你們練習和思考。我要告訴大家的第一個技巧是我們什麼時候會發/r/音,字母「r」。

So first of all, Americans they pronounce the "r". they have a rhotic R whereas in British English, it's a little bit more complicated. So, when words finish with the letter "r", we do not pronounce it, "better/bet/", we use the schwa.

首先,美國人發「r」音,他們有兒化音,而在英式英語中,情況有些複雜。當單詞以字母「r」結尾,我們不發這個音,「better/bet/」,我們發弱央元音。

Now, if you haven't seen my video about the schwa sound, you can go back and watch that on my channel. But an American, they would say "better/betr/", where they just /r/ on the end.

如果你還沒看過我關於弱央元音的視頻,你可以去我的頻道看看。但美國人他們說「better/betr/」,在結尾發/r/音。

Now, British English, we pronounce it as an //, better/bet/. So a few more words, we have "weather/we/".

而在英式英語中,我們發成//,better/bet/。再來一些詞,例如「weather/we/」。

Okay. Another schwa at the end because it's an //, and also, if we have words that simply end with just the letter "r". For example, "hear", "hear".

好,這是另一個以弱央元音結尾的詞,因為它發成//,我們還有一些以字母「r」結尾的詞。例如,「hear」,「hear」。

And that sound at the end is actually called a diphthong, the // sound and we'll talk about that in another video. So, when do we pronounce the /r/ in British English when it's in a word?

其結尾的音其實叫做雙元音,//音,我們會在另一個視頻中談及。那麼,在英式英語中,/r/什麼時候會在單詞中發音?

Well, we only pronounce the /r/ when it appears before a vowel sound. For example, listen to this sentence: I'm going to drive around the area in my car.

嗯,我們只在/r/出現在元音之前時才發。例如,聽聽這句話:我要開車在這一帶轉一圈。

I'm going to drive around the area in my car. So, we pronounce the R's in the words like "area", "drive" because there is a vowel after that "r", but the word "car", there's no vowel after that.

我要開車在這一帶轉一圈。我們在「area」、「drive」等單詞中發 R 的音,因為它的後面有個元音,但對於單詞「car」,R 後面沒有元音。

Okay. So, generally that's what happens. We also have something else in British English which is related to connected speech in pronunciation and this is called the intrusive R or the linking R.

通常就是這樣。在英式英語中,我們還有一些與連音發音有關的東西,叫做嵌入式 R 或連音 R。

Now, this is when we join our words with an R. Ok. Now, I'm not going to talk about that in this video, because that would take a long time. It's quite detailed.

就是當我們用 R 音來連接單詞。現在,我不打算在這段視頻中談論這個,因為那需要很長時間。很詳細。

But for example, if I was asking my friend where he is, instead of saying "where are you, where are you", what I will do is I will link with an /r/, "whe-rare you, whe-rare you". And this is because we're lazy, we need to join our words together and make it sound more native, more smooth, and just easier to come out of the mouth.

例如,如果我問我的朋友在哪裡,我不會說「where are you, where are you」,而是用/r/來把詞連起來,「whe-rare you, whe-rare you」。這是因為我們很懶,我們需要把我們的話連接起來,讓它聽起來更地道,更流暢,更容易說出來。

And that's what we call the intrusive R or the linking R. The next tip that I want to give you is to drop your T's. Use the glottal T sometimes.

這就是我們所說的嵌入式 R 或連音 R。我要說的下一個技巧就是去掉 T 音。有時候要使用喉塞 T。

Why "sometimes"? Why can't I say "a bo(tt)le of wa(t)er"? Well, the reason why is because really that's only kind of use with cockney accents.

為什麼是「有時候」?為什麼我不能說「a bo(tt)le of wa(t)er」?好吧,原因是因為這只是倫敦口音的一種用法。

Generally, if you want to be, you know, to have that kind of standard sounding British accent, the southern British accent, not RP because RP is not used really anymore. That 2% of the population uses RP English now.

一般來說,如果你想說那種標準的英國口音,英國南部口音,而不是 RP,因為 RP 已經不再使用了。如今只有2%的人口在使用 RP 口音。

But if you want kind of a normal British southern accent, then generally, we will drop our T's sometimes. In less formal occasions and even in formal occasions sometimes, I've been in job interviews before where I might drop the T on the word "it".

但如果你想學正常一點的英國南部口音,那麼通常情況下我們有時會去掉 T 音。在不太正式的場合,甚至有時是正式的場合,我曾經在工作面試中說「it」的時候把 T 音去掉了。

So for example, "it was good" instead of saying "it was good". To give you a few more examples, I could say "whe-ris i(t)", "whe-ris i(t)", instead of saying "where is it".

例如,「i(t) was good」,而不是「it was good」再舉幾個例子,我可以說「whe-ris it」,「whe-ris it」,而不是「where is it」。

You know, we can do that, but we can pronounce the T. You can do either, but I just think sometimes it's good to drop a T because it will make you sound that little bit more British and just have that kind of British sound to your voice.

我們可以這樣做,但我們也可以把 T 音發出來。都可以,但我只是覺得有時候去掉 T 音好一些,因為這樣會令你聽起來更英式,你的口音更有英式的味道。

One more, I could say to my friend: "I'll see you a little bit later", a little bit later. So, I'm pronouncing the T in "little".

我還會對我朋友說:「I'll see you a little bit later」,a little bit later。我把「little」中的 T 音發出來了。

But because "bit" isn't really that much of an important word in that sentence, it's kind of what we would call a function word. We drop it, "a little bit later".

因為「bit」在句中不是一個很重要的詞,它就像我們所說的功能詞。我們去掉它的 T 音,「a little bit later」。

Okay. So, we just kind of drop that T on the end to make it easier, quicker, and more British. So, continuing on. The last thing I want to tell you are two sounds that I think are very important to British English.

那麼,我們這樣把末尾的 T 音去掉,使它的發音更容易、更快速、更英式。好,繼續。最後,我想告訴大家兩個音,我認為它們對英式發音來說很重要。

Now, there are a lot of sounds that are important to British English, but these two are particularly good to know and hopefully, this will give you a good idea. So first of all, the // sound, the sound that would be in words like "a lot", "problem", "what", "forgot".

對英式發音來說,很多音都很重要,但知道這兩個尤其重要,希望能幫助大家。首先是//音,單詞「a lot」、「problem」、「what」、「forgot」中都有這個音。

So, it's that // sound where we kind of make this shape with our mouth like that, like a fish. And the reason why this is important is because for example, Americans and a lot of non natives learn to pronounce it in the American way which would be /ɑ/.

發//音的時候,我們的嘴巴要像這樣,像條魚。為什麼它很重要是因為,例如,美國人和很多非本地人學這個音發的是美式英語的/ɑ/。

So for example, "problem/prɑblm/", instead of "problem/prblm/", "problem/prɑblm/", "problem/prblm/", /prɑ/. So, we don't want that /ɑ/ or /r/ sound, we want it to be an // if we want to sound more British.

例如,「problem/prɑblm/」,而不是「problem/prblm/」,「problem/prɑblm/」,「problem/prblm/」,/prɑ/。如果我們像聽起來更英式,那麼我們不發成/ɑ/或/r/,我們發成//。

I'm sorry. My American accent is terrible by the way. For example, in a sentence: what's the problem? what's the problem? Okay.

抱歉,我的美式發音很爛。例如,句子:what's the problem?what's the problem?

And finally, the other sound which I think is quite important is the // sound. For example, in a word like "word" or "work".

最後,另一個我認為很重要的音是//音。例如,單詞「word」或「work」。

"I want to wear a purple shirt on Thursday." "I want to wear a purple shirt on Thursday."

「I want to wear a purple shirt on Thursday.」「I want to wear a purple shirt on Thursday.」

Now, an American would pronounce that as a /r/, "purple/prpl/ shirt/rt/", and we don't want that. We want it to be an // sound if we want that more British sound. It's a very difficult sound to learn.

美國人可能會發成/r/,「purple/prpl/ shirt/rt/」,但我們不是。我們的英式發音是//。這是一個非常難學的音。

All of my skype students find that sound difficult. Maybe one day, I'll do a video about this.

我所有 skype 學生都覺得這個音很難。也許有一天我會做一個關於這個的視頻。

If you want me to, please tell me. Your feedback really helps.

如果你想我做,請告訴我。你的反饋很重要。
