Special Promotion for FMLifestyle Listeners:
Today we are meeting an old friend.
He is French, he is about ten centimeters tall, he has been to China before, he's even been featured on previous FMLifestyle shows and he's one of the most famous chefs in the world.
Today we are meeting again Le Petit Chef, the 3D projected little chef who has won the hearts and bellies of diners all around the world with his exciting and delicious culinary adventures.
The Little Chef is now back in Beijing with a special new menu and a special new journey.
His new home is one of Beijing's best known restaurants in one of Beijing's most iconic landmark hotels.
The restaurant is Aria and the hotel China World Hotel.
To introduce Le Petit Chef and his journey across the silk road in the path of Marco Polo we are joined today by Aria's head chef Maiker Valdivia and the restaurant manager Jack Yu.
Aria is China World Hotel's flag western cuisine fine dining restaurant.
Over the years it has served classic French and Mediterranean cuisine to the stylish crowd of business people and luxury loving travelers frequenting the CBD.
However this time, Aria chose to take part in a the international project of Le Petit Chef with its latest installation that is more of a family dining experience.
Designed by Belgian company SkullMapping, an artistic collective, Le Petit Chef is a performance projected onto your empty dinner plate and table.
It is a show and a meal.
By making use of a combination of 3D animation and motion capture, a miniature chef turns your diner table into a land of adventure, flying on the back of a bird, running havoc through the market stalls in an Arabian city, fighting sea monsters and of course, cooking delicious food along the way.
The two artists behind SkullMapping are quite famous in Europe for their works in music videos and galleries, but it was this cute little hologram that got them famous worldwide.
Though projects combining technology and food are no longer a new thing, when videos of this odd meal started popping upon Youtube a few years ago people soon fell in love with the character and wanted to have the tiny chef cook a special meal for them too.
However, not many restaurants around the world are willing or qualified to host this unique project.
It requires a lot of preparation, design and training from the entire restaurant team as well as suitable facilities.
As Chef Valdivia said, "you cannot be late" and this applies both to the kitchen and service staff but also to the guests.
It is like going to the theater, there are two shows a night and everything must start and end on time.
As we said "Le Petit Chef in the Footsteps of Marco Polo" is the 3rd installment in the series, however this one is different.
In the first movie we got to know the little chef and his classic French cuisine, in the second one we had an underwater adventure with still, a very French menu, however, this time we are taken on a trip around the world crossing countries and continents and of course, culinary styles.
This was a great challenge for the chefs who had to design dishes of countries and regions they had never visited before and were not trained in their cooking styles and ingredients .
Another great challenge for the chefs was designing the presentations for each course, the adventure here is not restricted only to the virtual world, it stretches on to the real world and each dish is its own little show with special effects.
The timing for this project could not have been more suitable.
With China's Belt and Road Initiative picking up momentum everything is now about the silk road and the diners are happy with a dining experience that is relevant to current events.
SkullMapping already realized that one of its main markets is in China and designed this new movie with the Chinese diners in mind, on this adventure the Little Chef is also visiting the middle kingdom, flying with dragons, visiting the imperial palace and of course, eating Chinese food.
For the Chinese part of this journey western chefs like Chef Valdivia had to do some serious homework.
The Chinese dish of steamed grouper wasdelicate and elegant.
I naturally assumed that in a luxury Chinese hotel like China World it probably came from the kitchen of its renowned Chinese restaurant, I was surprised to find out that it didn't.
With a longer story and a diverse menu, special effects of smoke and a treasure chest along with some jokes and by the Little Chef this is an experience for the entire family, kids and adults alike can enjoy this meal and Aria is promising a fun summer adventure.
