China advises nationals against traveling abroad amid COVID-19 pandemic
Chinese authorities on Monday suggested that residents on the mainland not travel abroad amid the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, particularly to countries hit hard by the pandemic.
Officials with the National Health Commission and the National Immigration Administration made the remarks at a press conference.
As of Sunday, over 140 countries and regions worldwide have reported confirmed cases of COVID-19. (Xinhua)

US tells older people to stay home, all ages to avoid crowds
The White House on Monday urged elderly Americans to stay home and for everyone to avoid crowds and eating at restaurants as part of sweeping guidelines meant to combat an expected surge of coronavirus cases.
Other recommendations for the next 15 days include groups with more than 10 people should not meet in public, schooling should be at home, and discretionary travel and social visits should be avoided.
US President Donald Trump, speaking from the White House briefing room, was asked when the pandemic would subside, said that 「if we do a really good job」 the crisis could pass by July or August, a far less optimistic take than in his earlier predictions that it could be over within weeks. (AP)

Dow drops nearly 3,000 points on coronavirus fears
US equities plunged on Monday with the Dow closing down about 3,000 points, or 12.9 percent, as panic selling continued amid coronavirus fallout.
US President Donald Trump told reporters he sees a chance of recession and promised help to the struggling airline industry.
The losses came as huge swaths of the economy are approaching a standstill due to the coronavirus outbreak as businesses and travel have shut down. (AP)

Malaysian PM announces nationwide lockdown
Malaysia ’s new Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said during a televised national address on Monday that due to the threat of the new coronavirus (COVID-19), a nationwide lockdown would go into effect beginning Wednesday and extend through March 31.
The move indicates a reset on immigration control measures prohibiting nationals from exiting the country and all foreign travelers from entering. Also, returning nationals will have to undergo 14 days of self-quarantine.
Public gatherings, including religious, sports, social, and cultural activities, will be prohibited. (People's Daily app)

Italian FA to ask for Euro 2020 postponement
Italy's football federation will ask for the Euro 2020 tournament to be postponed over the coronavirus outbreak in the hope of being able to complete the Serie A season, its president said on Sunday.
Top-flight football across Europe has ground to a halt as a result of the spread of the coronavirus, with national and continental club competitions suspended or postponed.
Representatives of European clubs and leagues and the players will join national federations on an emergency video-conference call organized by UEFA on Tuesday. Discussions will include Euro 2020 which is due to take place in 12 European countries, including Italy, from June 12 to July 12. (CGTN)

Spanish King renounces inheritance from father amid scandal
Spain’s King Felipe VI has renounced any future personal inheritance he could receive from his father, King Emerit Juan Carlos I, over the alleged financial irregularities involving the former monarch, the country’s royal house announced Sunday.
The decision comes amid an ongoing investigation by Swiss prosecutors into an offshore account allegedly operated for Juan Carlos.
The account allegedly received $100 million from Saudi Arabia’s late King Abdullah in 2008, which prosecutors believe could be kickback payments, according to a Swiss newspaper. (AP)

Japanese man sentenced to death for murder of 19 at care home
A Japanese man was sentenced to death on Monday for murdering 19 disabled people at a care home, in one of the country's worst mass killings.
Satoshi Uematsu never disputed his involvement in the grisly rampage, but his lawyers entered a plea of not guilty, arguing the 30-year-old was suffering a "mental disorder" linked to his use of marijuana.
Uematsu has reportedly said he wanted to eradicate all disabled people in the horrifying attack that also left 26 people wounded. (AFP)
闖入殘疾人託養院殺死19人 日本橫濱男子被判死刑
3月16日,日本橫濱市地方法院當天以殺人罪判處30歲男子植松聖死刑,他曾於2016年7月闖入神奈川縣內的一處殘疾人託養機構用刀具殺死19人,刺傷捅傷26人。該案成為日本歷史上死傷最慘重的單一犯罪事件之一。
植松聖當庭對自己的罪行供認不諱,但他的律師以當事人因吸食大麻導致精神異常為理由,要求法院判決其無罪。
據悉,植松聖作案時曾多次叫囂要「除掉」所有殘障人士。
