人生不如意十有八九，
有時做一件事差一點就成功了
不禁發出「哎呀媽呀！就差一點」的感概！
但「哎呀媽呀！就差一點」這句話英語怎麼說？
這個俚語和雪茄（Cigar）有關，它是：
"Close, but no cigar."
這句話乍看之下會讓人摸不到頭腦，
「接近，但沒有雪茄」？？？
而且這個雪茄是哪裡來的？
就跟，
不過它的準確意思是：
接近，但不對；差點勝利；功虧一簣。
舉個例子：
A: How did your investment turn out? Did you make a lot of money?(你做的那項投資結果怎麼樣？有賺很多錢嗎？)B: Close, but no cigar. Just my luck, I guess.(唉，差一點點。是我太衰吧。)A: Sorry to hear that. Better luck next time!(真可惜。希望你下次運氣會好一點！)
這個短語最常用於某人在某事上接近成功，但不是很成功。
This phrase is most often used when someone is nearly — but not quite — successful at something.
所以，以後差點成功的事情都可以用"Close, but no cigar"，需要注意的是這個俚語流行於美國，其它英語國家很少使用哦~
雪茄和成功又有什麼關係呢？
在20世紀初期的美國，雪茄曾被用作遊樂場遊戲的獎品。這些遊戲通常非常難，大多數人都很難贏得雪茄這個獎品。
Cigars were once used as prizes for carnival gamesin the United States in the early 20th century. These games of skill or chance were often exasperatingly difficult, and most people failed to win a prize.
每個參與者失敗後，主持遊戲的人就會喊：「接近了，但沒有贏得雪茄！」或者"漂亮的嘗試，但沒贏得雪茄"。
After each participant failed, the carnival barker would shout, "Close, but no cigar!" or "Nice try, but no cigar!"
所以雖然 「close」 但卻還是得不到獎品，類似我們在中文裡可能會說「哎呀媽呀！就差一點」，不過這個起源並沒有人能完全確定或證實。

而上邊的遊戲通常指「 Highball」或「 Hi-Striker」，也就是我們在遊樂場玩的「大力士遊戲」，玩家必須通過重擊重物使其向上，觸碰鈴鐺發出鈴響。
贏雪茄的遊戲傳統可以追溯到1902年，在羅伯特·馬赫雷（Robert Machray）的書《The Night Side of London》就提到了這種現象：
"Another penny gives you the privilege of trying to roll three balls into certain holes with numbers attached thereunto. Should you score twenty you will win a cigar. But you do no more than score nine. Undiscouraged, or perhaps encouraged by this fact, you spend another penny, and another, and another — but you don't get the cigar, and it is well for you that you don't! For there are cigars and cigars. On you go, and next you try your hand at the cocoa-nuts, or the skittles, or the clay-pipes, or in the shooting-alleys. And so on and on — until your stock of pennies and patience is exhausted."

現在雪茄不再是這些遊戲的獎品，但是「Close, but no cigar!」的用法卻保留了下來。隨著時代的發展，我們現在玩這個遊戲需要擔心是如何安頓贏過來的大泰迪熊，也許未來會出現「Close, but no teddy bear!」的俚語。
