黑貓和白貓
So passed several days,
First one then another,
The cats never speaking,
avoiding each other;
Though sometimes they
met up by chance in the yard,
They stayed at a distance
and kept up their guard.
就這樣過了一天又一天。
兩隻貓彼此迴避，
再也沒說過話。
雖然有時她們在附近的院子碰到，
但她們會保持距離並各自擺出一副防禦的架勢。
But after more time had
passed since their fight,
Feeling odd, the white
cat wondered onenight;
「Perhaps the neighbor
cat just down the street
Was actually right,
and looks far more sweet?」
但是在吵架很久後的一個晚上，
白貓感覺怪怪的，
她開始想：「或許附近的那隻黑貓說的對，
她看起來遠比我可愛？」
The same thing happened
to the dark-coloredcat:
「Maybe he’s right-a fine
sight to look at.」
And so the two cats both
began to think hard
About who was the
finest-furred cat in the yard.
黑貓也產生了同樣的想法，
她想：「也許白貓說的對，
她比我更好看。
」 因此，她們開始思考誰是這院子
裡有優質貓毛的貓。
So what did the white cat do,
Feeling his lack?
Jumped into a tar pit
and turned to all black!
意識到這些後，
接下來白貓會怎麼做呢？
她跳進一個瀝青坑，
染上了一身的黑色。
And what of the black cat?
After all of his talk,
He leapt straight into a pit full chalk!
黑貓呢？黑貓徑直跳進了白色的粉筆池子！
The white cat turned black,
The black cat turned white,
So you wouldn’t know which
of the cats were in sight.
「Meow,」 mewed one with
his tail stifflyraised,
He did not understand,
He was simply amazed.
白貓變黑貓，黑貓變白貓，
分不清誰是誰。
其中一隻貓僵硬的抬高尾巴喵喵叫，
她也覺的費解、驚訝了。
The white cat meowed-that
tar sure did itch
He couldn’t remove it,
It clung with each twitch,
And the black cat, too,
Wasn’t having much fun
With chalk up his nose and his eyes,
He was done!
身上的瀝青讓白貓疼的直叫，
但瀝青黏著毛扯的一下一下的疼，
怎麼也抖落不掉。
這時黑貓也很不爽，鼻孔裡眼睛裡全是粉筆水。
What to do?
Well,they ran,together and each,
They up and they ran
all the way to the beach.
Splashed in the waves’till
their fur was washed clean,
The shiniest cats that
have ever been seen.
這下該怎麼辦？她們都跑啊跑，
一起跑到大海邊。
下水仔細清洗，
直到徹底洗乾淨才停下來。
現在，
她們成了人們見過的貓毛最閃亮的兩隻貓了。
I’m sure you can guess that
from that wet day on,
Those cats decided to let
by gones be gone.
「I’m sorry,」one said;
Said the other,」And I,」
So they huddled together
and tried to get dry.
現在你一定猜到了自海邊那天起，
這兩隻貓不計前嫌的作了朋友。
她們互相道歉後，
擁抱對方為彼此弄乾貓毛。
What started in anger ended
that fine day,
For all colors are beautiful
in their own special day.
Two cats learned a lesson that
they』ll always heed;
It’s not colors that matter,
but goodfriends you need.
白貓黑貓的故事雖以憤怒開場但以和平告終，
因為所有的顏色都有自己獨特的美。
白貓黑貓永遠會記得這個教訓：
好朋友的顏色不重要，
重要的是他們願意幫助你。
