摘要:

The term Biomimetics has been commonlyadopted to describe the transfer of ideas and analogues from biology totechnology, often with impressive results. A fundamental obstacle in theconcept of Biomimetics is, however, often overlooked: there is no systematicway to identify a biological model system that can serve as a promising startingpoint for solving a given technological problem. Therefore, even biologistshave usually problems to select a useful biological model system; this applies even more to researchers andengineers who are not familiar with Botany and Zoology.

Taking a recently finished project in thefield of blast furnace technology as an example, we illustrate in this talkboth the potential and the problems of the Biomimetics approach: the chemical reactions that reduce iron oreto metallic iron in a blast furnace consume vast amounts of oxygen. Therefore, hot air is fed into the furnace by openings called tuyeres. Tuyeres aredelicate components notorious for failure, causing high economic losses. Thegoal of the project was therefore to develop more robust tuyeres. This wasfinally achieved by utilizing certain plants and animals as model systems, exploitingtheir interaction strategies with water, and transferring the findings to theinteraction between tuyeres and liquid iron.

報告人簡介:

Dr. Wilfried Konrad is a senior researcherat The University of Tubingen. His research fields cover bionics, functionalmorphology, benthos paleontology, and paleoclimatology. He participates in manyresearch projects and achieves outstanding results. Among them, a new textilefor water transfer was developed based on bionic analysis of evaporation andcondensation in different moss species in cooperation with Dundoff Institutefor Textiles and Fibres (DITF) in Germany. A technology has been developed toidentify persistent air layers based on the surface of an organism immersed ina liquid phase; Based on a new 3D nanostructured filter medium, a highlyefficient coalestizer (3D bio-filter) was developed, which won the TECHTEXTILInnovation Award in July 2011. Furthermore, he designed a model of waterrecovery and conservation based on the water balance principle of the Brazilianpineapple flower, etc. At the same time, according to the research results,Konrad has applied for many patents and published more than 50 papers, whichhave been widely recognized in the related field.
