1、hold on
很多人可能在給某人打電話的時候會聽到並且會說：
"Hi, may I speak with Joe? ",
"Oh, yeah, I'll get him. Hold on."
- 嗨，我能和喬說話嗎？
- 哦，好的，我去找他。等一等。
這裡hold on的意思是wait。
Hold on也表示grab。
如果你在公交車上，比如車上有點搖晃，you hold onto the bar, so you don't fall.
你抓住欄杆，這樣你就不會摔倒。
所以hold on意思是等待，抓住。
2、hold off
hold off也可以表示wait。通常hold off的意思是你在等別的事情完成。
如：I will hold off giving you the quiz until I finish explaining everything.
我會等到解釋完所有內容才會給你們測試。
它也可以表示抱歉，推辭。
如：we will hold off the election until everybody has a chance to find out who the candidates are.
我們要推遲選舉，這樣每個人都有機會了解候選人是誰。
3、hold up
Hold up也意味著延遲某事。
如：The party was held up, because not enough people came, because of the bad weather.
所以聚會被延遲了，因為沒有足夠的人來，因為天氣不好。
hold up的另外一個完全不同的意思是：「別動！搶劫！」
如：The bank robbers walked into the bank and held up the tellers to get their money.
銀行搶劫犯走進銀行，劫持出納員讓他們取錢。
4、hold out
Hold out的意思是wait，但它用在一個截然不同的語境中。如果你在等待一個更好的工作機會，或者一個更好的處境，或者任何更好的事。
在體育運動中，你會經常聽到這個詞。
一名職業曲棍球運動員的合同即將到期。球隊想和他籤一份新合同，但他沒有。他不籤了。為什麼？他想要更多的錢。
他們說：「好吧。我們不會給你加薪的。」
他會說：「行，我會繼續等著的。」
So he isholding out a better offer. 所以他會待價而沽。
我們會說這個人在等待更好的合約。
5、hold over
Hold over也表示耽擱。
如：The exhibition was held over until next week because of technical difficulties.
由於技術上的困難，展覽會延期到下星期舉行。
6、hold against
Hold against也有兩個意思。例如，I can hold the pen against my chest.
我可以把筆放在胸前。
但是hold against還有另一個完全不同的意思：懷恨。
如：You hold it against them that they did something bad to you in the past.
你指責他們過去對你做了壞事
7、hold onto
Hold onto也有兩個意思。和hold on類似，
"Hold onto your seats, we're going to go very fast."
「坐穩了，我們要加速了。」
例如，當你去看電影時，你可以說："Hold onto your seats, this is going to be an exciting ride"
「坐好，這將是一段激動人心的旅程」
Hold on也有keep的意思。
如：hold onto your job
保住你的工作，不要丟掉工作hold onto your friends
保持友情，永遠不要失去你的朋友。
8、hold back
Hold back是指限制某人。
Hold back在學校有另一種用法。如果一個學生表現很差，the school will holdhim or her back for a year, they will have to do the year over again.
學校會讓他或她留級一年，他們將不得不再來一年。
They've been held back.
他們留級了。
9、hold down
Hold down意為用身體按住某物。
如：If I wanna fight and I'm on the ground, my friends will hold me down; they won't let me stand back up to fight.
如果我想打架，而我在地上，我的朋友會把我按住；他們不讓我站起來打架。
當你談論食物的時候，也可以用Hold down。
如：I ate a lot of pizza and then I got on a rollercoaster, like going up and down, and I just couldn't hold down my food;

工作上，我們也可以用hold down。
如：A person who can hold down a job will have a successful life, because he or she has money.

10、hold to
這是一種特殊的情況。
如：I'm going to hold you to your promise.
我要你信守諾言。
