Seven Blind Mice 《七隻瞎老鼠》的故事情節，對我們中國人來說應該是再熟不過了，很像《盲人摸象》的故事。這本書的創作者，Ed Young恰好也是個華裔美國人，1931年出生於天津，1951年前往美國求學。他自己說，他的父親在他小時候，會在他們家的房頂上，滿天群星下，給孩子們講很多很多的故事。也許，盲人摸象是其中的一個吧。
Ed Young成長為一個傑出的童書作家，藝術家。他一生創作了80多本童書，因為Lon Po Po 獲得凱迪克金獎，這本Seven Blind Mice為他贏得了諸多獎項，包括凱迪克榮譽獎， 美國圖書館協會最佳獎等等。他常常提到中國的國畫藝術和民間傳說等傳統文化帶給他無窮的靈感和深遠影響。因為他的成就，他被兩次提名安徒生獎，世界兒童文學的最高獎。
咱們來看看Ed Young是怎麼講這個咱們中國人耳熟能詳的故事的。我尤其喜歡裡面的插圖，每一頁都留了許多的想像空間。
One day seven blind mice were surprised to find a strange Something by their pond.
一天，七隻瞎老鼠在池塘邊發現一個奇怪的東西，很吃驚。
「What is it?」 they cried, and they all ran home.
「這是什麼呀？」他們喊道，然後都跑回家了。
On Monday, Red Mouse went first to find out.
星期一，紅老鼠先去探究一下。
「It’s a pillar,」 he said.
「是個柱子，」他說。
No one believed him.
沒人相信他。
On Tuesday, Green Mouse set out. He was second to go.
星期二，綠老鼠先去了。他是第二個。
「It’s a snake,」 he said.
「是條蛇，」他說。
「No，」 said Yellow Mouse on Wednesday.
「不對，「黃老鼠星期三時說。
「It’s a spear.」 He was the third in turn.
「是長矛。「 他是第三個。
The fourth was Purple Mouse. He went on Thursday.
第四個是紫色老鼠。他星期四去的。
「It's a great cliff," he said. 」
是個大懸崖，「 他說。
Orange Mouse went on Friday, the fifth to go.
橙色老鼠星期五去的，第五個。
」It's a fan!" he cried. "I felt it move."
"是個扇子！」 他喊道。「我能感覺他在動。」
The sixth to go was Blue Mouse.
第六個去的是藍老鼠。
He went on Saturday and said, "It's nothing but a rope."
他星期六去的，他說，「這是個繩子。」
之後，他們就吵起來了。直到星期天。。。
Until on Sunday, White Mouse, the seventh mouse, went to the pond.
直到星期天，白老鼠，第七隻老鼠，去了池塘。
When she came upon the Something, she ran up one side, and she ran down the other. She ran across the top and from end to end.
當她來到那個東西時，她從一邊上去，從另一邊下來。她爬到上面，從一頭跑到另一頭。
「Ah," said White Mouse. "Now, I see. The Something is
as sturdy as a pillar,
supple as a snake,
wide as a cliff,
sharp as a spear,
breezy as a fan,
stringy as a rope,
but altogether the Something is ...
"啊，」白老鼠說，「我看看。這個東西
象柱子一樣穩當
象蛇一樣柔軟
象懸崖一樣寬
象長矛一樣尖
象扇子一樣有風
象繩子一樣有線頭
合到一起，這個東西是。。。
an elephant!" 大象！」
這時候，其他老鼠也學著白老鼠上上下下地探究了一番。
大家都同意了，這是一頭大象！
我們從中學到了什麼呢？
Knowing in part may make a fine tale, but wisdom comes from seeing the whole.
看部分的時候，可能有一個很好的故事，但智慧是來自於整體的。
