Among the new cluster of local COVID-19 infections in Beijing, Tang, 52, the first confirmed case in the city, received the title of "the strongest brain" from Chinese netizens after thoroughly recalling his whereabouts and close contacts in the past two weeks. Surnamed Tang, the patient detailed the places he'd been to since May 30, which included a trampoline playground, a restaurant, a forest park, a cellular shop, a delivery site and Xinfadi, a huge wholesale food market that was shut down on Saturday. Tang also listed 38 people he had been in close contact with in the past 14 days.
Tang lived in Beijing's Xicheng district and thus was dubbed "Xicheng Uncle". He told epidemiologists that he went to Xinfadi for seafood on June 3, which quickly led the health authorities to trace down the market and provided a timely wake-up call to the related departments. While receiving treatment in Ditan Hospital, he told Beijing TV reporters that he went shopping at Xinfadi because "his child wanted to eat fish", but unfortunately "fell in the trap".
Wu Hao, disease prevention and control expert at the National Health Commission, recognized Tang's efforts, saying he boosted their confidence to fight against the disease. After experiencing symptoms of a possible COVID-19 infection, Tang voluntarily rode a bike to the hospital while wearing a mask, which is important to protect others. He also clearly mapped his destinations, which can be verified through big data, according to Wu.
Beijing has conducted nucleic acid tests for more than 356,000 people since June 13. Household-based screening was also carried out to identify anybody who might be infected.
