太原衛星發射中心有關負責人13日表示，我國將於近日在太原衛星發射中心，用「長徵四號丙」運載火箭，擇機發射「中國遙感衛星八號」。

據報導，「遙感衛星八號」將於近日在山西太原衛星發射中心用「長徵四號丙」運載火箭發射。
在上面的報導中，remote-sensing satellite就是「遙感衛星」。遙感衛星是低軌道衛星，主要有三大用途：一是對地觀測，獲取遙感信息；二是進行微重力試驗；三是為載人航天作返回的技術儲備。那麼，什麼是remote-sensing（遙感）呢？遙感是利用遙感器從空中來探測地面物體性質的，它根據不同物體對波譜產生不同響應的原理，識別地面上各類地物。
Remote可以用在remote sensor（遙感器）中，也可以用在remote controller中，即我們所熟悉的「遙控器」。Remote還可以表示「遠程的」，例如remote computer operation（遠程計算機操作）。
自從新中國成立以來，我國的航天技術經歷了飛速的發展。我們現在不光有remote-sensing satellite，還有communication satellite（通信衛星）、weather satellite/ meteorological satellite （氣象衛星）、geosynchronous satellite（同步軌道衛星）、recoverable satellite（返回式衛星）等。
