當在 other 之前使用不定冠詞 an 時，就變成了單個詞 another，意為「又一，再一」，「不同的，類似的，可選的」。
一、another 作代詞，例如：
This knife is blunt, can I have another?
這把刀鈍了，能再給我一把嗎？
I don't like this room. I'm going to ask for another.
我不喜歡這個房間。我打算另要一間。
This wall needs another coat of paint.
這面牆需要再刷一層漆。
二、another 作限定詞，一般情況下後面接單數名詞，例如：
We can't afford another trip abroad this year.
今年我們負擔不起再出國旅行了。
We can fit another person in my car.
我的車裡還可以坐進一個人。
Danny's had yet another car accident.
丹尼又出車禍了。
但是如果 another 跟「時間、錢、距離，數量」等時，名詞也可以用複數形式，例如：
I need another two minutes to finish the test.
我還需要兩分鐘來完成測試。
It will be another three months before we can go back to the earth.
我們要再過三個月才能返回地球。
My passport is valid for another two years.
我的護照有效期為兩年。
I need another 10 dollars.
我還需要10美元。
He could have been trusted to drive another ten miles in search of some appliance.
他可以被信任駕車再走十英裡去尋找某種器械。
三、one another 相當於 each other，是一個代詞，例如：
We all try and help one another.
我們都盡力互相幫助。
I think we've learned a lot about one another in this session.
我認為這段時間我們相互有了很多了解。
四、one way or another 譯為「不管怎樣，無論如何」，例如：
We'll get out of this mess one way or another.
不管怎樣，我們都會擺脫困境的。
I didn't really care one way or another.
管它怎樣，我真的不在乎。
五、one (…) after another 譯為「一個接著另一個」，例如：
I'm not surprised he's feeling ill, because he was eating one ice cream after another!
他病了，我一點也不奇怪，因為他一個接一個地吃冰淇淋！
解析：because 用來說明對聽眾來說很重要的事情的原因。
They had faced one difficulty after another with bravery and dedication.
他們以無畏和無私奉獻的精神迎接了一個又一個的困難。
The guests came one after another.
客人們陸續來了。
