Topic: Why I Chose This Major
[寫在前面:人對一個事物的理解是隨著智力水平的提升、閱歷經歷的增加而豐富的,我現在對一個事物的理解可以和昨天這個時候對它的理解完全不同,但在現在的狀態來看,我滿意我的這份理解]
My major->English and Japanese
English and Japanese-> Foreign language
Foreign language-> Language
So let’s start from 「Why language?」.
Firstly, apparently I LOVE language. And this means I love not only foreign languages, but also Mandarin and dialects like Cantonese or Sichuan Hua or Chaoshan Hua. Then you may ask, 「what to love about a language?". And generally I could have responded 「then why chemistry, or computer, or history?」, but to be serious today, I will list the reasons.
The romanticism in a language weighs most to me. Romanticism has many conveyers: body language(kisses, hugging), eye contacts(think of a pair of sensuous eyes over which make you swoon), settings(a wedding could be the most romantic and ornate setting), gifts(roses, you know, language of flower). See, there are a lot of things conveying romanticism, but what we could never forget, is words, is language. A love letter or just some lovely words can stir your mind and drown you in a sudden. And you later chew the words, think about with what kind of emotion he or she have written this. Also, the romanticism in a language not only stays in a brief love letter from your love. It stays in literature and lives forever, appeals forever, except you never get time for a relaxing getaway journey from the reality and into the literature world.
I do believe few people will appreciate this romanticism in a language, in the usage of words, in the delicate description of a scene, an emotion, in the hidden meaning. As we don’t have sufficient romantic people around. It is the same as people like me won’t have a slight interest in computer or politics. It all depends on what kind of people you want to be and which kind of life you choose to live.
Not every language is romantic, definitely. That dialects are not technical languages is due to you cannot read it or write it down, and they are only for conversation and, thanks to this, for conveying friendliness, sense of similarity, belonging. Also they still get their unique tone, and whether to find this appealing is up to you.
So, I am actually talking about the second question, why I choose foreign language, and specifically, English and Japanese.
For they are real languages, and which I find appealing to me. I do love English, and always be struck down by some intensely romantic English expressions. English itself is romantic to me. I love the tone, the writing, the books, and a little for Western culture, even people when they speak English. Listening, speaking, reading, writing, with English they feel not a burden for me. More like a fruitful journey where I am really feeling confident and harvesting all along. One of the most romantic books I have ever read will be Call Me by Your Name by Andre Aciman, which is really difficult for me to read but really ecstatic.
Every lines in the books, every scene he describes, the emotion, the alluring milieu, the erotic reveries. There may be some words that feel unusual to you because this is what the literature is. We are not only speaking sth, to transport information. We are decorating it and teaching you how to be a romantic and elegant person. What word will you use in replacement of 『laziness』? You get 『idleness』, we get indolent drift, afternoon torpor, languor, languorous, drowsy, lethargic. As I said before, you may consider we are doing useless job by replacing a word with a synonym that still convey the same meaning, that’s because only few people wiling to spare time for tasting these words can understand this. You can’t get this because you ain't really into it. What to love about English? Well it’s hard to explain to you. Maybe it is the most advanced and systemic language? Maybe a lot of literature masterworks are written in English? Maybe I just find English more romantic than others. Hard to explain to you, we don’t really need a reason.
Then, we won’t forget Japanese. True it is that I love English more than Japanese, but that’s probably because I haven’t read about any Japanese books (forget about 東野圭吾)? Japanese is, can’t deny, the most delicate language in appearance. We see Japanese in various shapes and forms, and it will always surprise us and fascinate us. Japanese is a delicate decoration. So, before I ever get to know Japanese, it has already caught me with its appearance. What’s more, I grow up with anime and manga, I have long appreciated the famous 『unique Japanese thinking way』.
To be honest, I love Italian more than Japanese, but I don't have options.
Ok, finally, why 「major」?
Still, to be general, I could have asked you, then 「why you Major, in chemistry or physics, or accounting?」. And that is a really good question. Since you』ve made your decision, have you ever reflected about Why I chose to major this?
Save your answer you don’t need to tell me.
A lot of people take language as a tool and solely for conversation, and so they think a training school will get works done. Why major in university? Speak for language, why don’t you learn Your Skill in a training school if what you want is, this very skill. You don’t even need to go to a university for that.
What we do in the university?
My answer, what I have been taught in class, is that I come to university to be educated by language. I am not just grabbing my textbooks heading for the training class to try to improve my poor English. I am making for education.
Think about the difference between 「training and education」 you may get your own answer.
Being in that class, I am talking with people as romantic as me(hopefully), getting assistance from experienced professors that will only make me love what I am doing and make me love it more and more.
Art is, to describe, to reveal, to address, to expose, to create. And I am being a person I will love and trying to create what I will love. I will never live a life where I am locked in a 單人間 facing numbers or characters(Computer). I choose to be a romantic person and live a vibrant life.
All in all, I major for getting educated to grow into a person I will love with professional assistance, not just for a training which will make me score high in a exam.
Well, to be honest, not all students in the language are romantic. Still a lot of people take it for a key for their teacher jobs, or for something easy to master(they come to university but without an intention and language could be very easy for those who score highly in high school). Or, some of them are just gifted. They can master language really easily and that give them chances to develop themselves with less stress.
Not for me. For I really love language and not have a gift for it.
I do what I love, be who I love, live where I love.
I create what I love, be with who I love, reach where I love.
