A large part of China is shrouded in smog again. What are some of the terms frequently used when the Chinese talk about smog?

Meaning in English: smog

Pinyin: wù mái

Chinese characters: 霧霾

Example: jīn tiān de wù mái hěn yán zhòng. (Literally: Today’s smog is very bad.)


Meaning in English: fog

Pingyin: wù

Chinese characters: 霧


Meaning in English: air

Pingyin: kōng qì

Chinese characters: 空氣

Meaning in English: air quality

Pinyin: kōng qì zhì liàng

Chinese characters: 空氣品質


Meaning in English: pollution

Pinyin: wū rǎn

Chinese characters: 汙染


Meaning in English: index

Pinyin: zhǐ shù

Chinese characters: 指數

Example: kōng qì wū rǎn zhǐ shù = air pollution index (API)


Meaning in English: blue sky

Pinyin: lán tiān

Chinese characters: 藍天

Meaning in English: mouth mask

Pinyin: kǒu zhào

Chinese characters: 口罩

Example: wǒ yào mǎi yī gè kǒu zhào. (Literally: I want to buy a mouth mask.)

jīn tiān chū mén yào dài kǒu zhào. (Literally: Today you must wear a mouth mask if you go outside; dài=wear; chū mén=go outside)


Meaning in English: PM2.5

Pinyin: PM èr diǎn wǔ

Chinese characters: PM二點五

Example: jīn tiān de PM èr diǎn wǔ zhǐ shù shì duō shǎo? (What is today’s PM2.5 index?)


Meaning in English: blurred

Pinyin: mó hú

Chinese characters: 模糊

Meaning in English: skyline

Pinyin: tiān jì xiàn

Chinese characters: 天際線

Example: jīn tiān de tiān jì xiàn hěn mó hú. (Today’s skyline is blurred a lot.)
