IAA 2017: Big auto players' new plans and strategies

The 67th Frankfurt International Motor Show (IAA 2017), the largest car show of 2017, is underway. Carmakers from around the world have gathered in Germany to display their latest and greatest. NewsTurbo editor would like to give you a glimpse of the big players' new plans and strategies announced or mentioned at the show. Take a look!

Audi and HERE Technologies are forging closer links all the time, with both companies looking to work together even more closely in future;

Focusing on improved intelligence, connectivity, and eco-friendliness, Audi will provide more valued choices for future premium vehicle consumers;

Audi showcased its progress in autonomous driving strategy through the new Audi A8, which incorporates conditional automated driving at level 3 as standard.

Mercedes-Benz plans to build its first power battery manufacturing base outside of Germany in China and expects to launch local production of EQ models by 2020;

By 2022, Mercedes-Benz will electrify its entire Mercedes portfolio, offering its customers at least one electrified drivetrain variant per model series. All in all, Mercedes-Benz is planning to have more than 50 electrified vehicle offerings.

The BMW Group is committed to expanding its development expertise in the field of automated/autonomous driving;

Starting 2020, all models will be offered in a full-electric or plug-in hybrid drivetrain in addition to the combustion engine option;

The BMW Group announced its next step in electrification strategy. The China market will be the most important factor in implementing the strategy;

When i Vision goes into production, it will form part of the company's "Number One > Next strategy" promising 25 models with an electrified drive system, 12 of which will be pure-electric, by 2025.

Jaguar Land Rover will put the New Discovery SVX into production in 2018, making it the first Land Rover assembled by hand at the SVO Technical Centre;

In the 2017/18 financial year, JLR plans to invest more than £4 billion in exciting new products, innovative technologies, and increasing manufacturing capacity;

From 2020, all new JLR vehicle lines will be electrified. Customers will be able to choose from battery electric, plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid power as well as ultra-clean petrol and diesel engines. 

Ultra Luxury and Sports Car Brands

Bentley will build a new fully electric, two-seat sports car, based on the EXP 12 Speed 6e concept;

Bentley is also working on inductive charging technology that will allow owners to do away with conventional charging cables.

Ferrari will ease a longstanding cap on sales;

The Ferrari Portofino will replace the California;

Ferrari may broaden its footprint in cars and branded merchandise without damaging its high-end image;

Ferrari is working on hybrid versions of its sportscars but has no plans for now to develop wholly electric vehicles;

Ferrari would never make an SUV like the one developed by Porsche or Maserati 「because these aren’t vehicles that represent the sportiness of our cars」.

Lamborghini would seek to fully exploit the potential of its V10 and V12 naturally aspirated engines;

Lamborghini is working on hybrid versions of its sportscars but has no plans for now to develop wholly electric vehicles.

Maserati has no plans of bringing a replacement for the highly successful yet ageing GranTurismo anytime soon.

Three brands – Audi, Skoda, and Volkswagen – will launch ten all-new SUVs over the next two or three years;

The Volkswagen Group has launched the most comprehensive electrification initiative in the global automotive industry with its "Roadmap E":

By 2025, the combined Volkswagen Group brands will bring 80 new EV lines to production, and the Group will need over 150 gigawatt hours of li-ion battery capacity annually for its own fleet alone;

By 2030, at least one electrified variant of each of the group's 300 variants will be rolled out;

Up until 2030, the Group will earmark over €20 billion for direct investments in the industrialization of e-mobility.

Toyota will expand its hybrid offer with more derivatives;

The company will maintain its sustainable growth by making ever better cars;

The company will take care of its customers with an ever stronger focus on our "customer-first" approach;

Toyota will introduce a second tier across its hybrid range, boosting the power of battery-assisted models to increase their appeal;

Future battery electric vehicles will be based on the same architecture, where customers have an electric motor directly powered by a higher capacity battery.

Honda commits to electrifying every new model for the European market;

Honda is participating in a trial in western France, where Power Manager units will be installed in a pilot scheme, as part of the development of a regional "smart grid" to be completed by 2020.

Looking to 2030 Renault imagines new scenarios with more efficient energy use, connectivity and autonomous driving scenarios that will improve how people live and travel.

Opel's new business plan will be presented in November;

PSA will urge Opel to improve its sales to individual customers;

PSA has begun preparing the ground for deep cuts to turn around the automaker's newly acquired Opel/Vauxhall business.

Hyundai plans to launch 15 eco cars by 2020;

Hyundai will launch the Kona electric vehicle next year;

Hyundai also plans to launch a next-generation fuel cell electric SUV in next three years;

Subaru is going to launch the Impreza in Europe in 2018.Suzuki plans to launch the new Swift Sport in Europe in the spring of 2018.

By the end of the year, Chery will have sold 80,000 battery powered or plug-in hybrids.

WEY put forward a concept of "redefined luxury";

WEY has hinted at a possible future European expansion by unveiling the XEV;

WEY thinks that is the precondition of luxury and is the core competitiveness of the brand.

Borgward plans to enter the German market by the end of the year;

Borgward will extend its presence in nearly 20 countries around the globe, boosting its globalization;

Borgward aims to deliver 800,000 cars per year by 2020, before ramping up production to 1.6 million cars annually by 2025.
