Stallions varsity girls win season opener vs KCIS Gators
On Monday night the SHSID Stallions mens and womens varsity teams traveled to MSports basketball center for league games vs the KCIS Gators.
SSSBL Womens: SHSID Stallions 38-33 KCIS Gators.
In their first game of the 2020-21 season the girls took to the floor to face off against Catrina Tu’s former school, KCIS. The Gators came out and played some tight man-to-man defense that put a lot of pressure on the Stallions offensively. On the other side of the floor the Gators came out firing on all cylinders from behind the arc, taking advantage of gaps in SHSID’s 2-3 zone, forcing the girls to switch it up to man-to-man defense to close out on KCIS’s sharpshooters. It was a back-and-forth throughout but things would take a turn for the worst in the final period as 2 of SHSID’s star players Barbie Hsu and captain Passion Chiang would leave the game with injuries. Fortunately, in her SSSBL debut, young prodigy Sunny Wang would step up big, dialing in from deep and giving the Stallions a much needed 3-points to inspire the team to a hard-fought victory.
SSSBL Mens: SHSID Stallions 61-55 KCIS Gators
In their second game of the year the Stallions played in another nail-biter that went right down to the wire. The Stallions have grown accustomed to competiting at a size disadvantage this year and had to make up with their lack of height with some slick ball movement to beat the Gators zone defense. Ball movement was solid early on but the blue and gold weren’t able to capitalize on some easy opportunities at the basket.
Some of the Stallions reserves got to see good minutes early in the game, with players such as Federico Ferracin and Henry Li cashing in on some scoring opportunities to keep the pace set by the starters and give them some much earned rest.
Late in the game KCIS took the lead 55-54 thanks to Andrew Duan hitting 2 for 2 in the crucial moments from the line. The Stallions would answer on a signature 3 ball from Marcus Gao and a fast break score from Jimmy Chen on the nice dish from Anson Lin to seal the victory.
Statistical Breakdown:
Game Previews:
Womens SSSBL: Mon Dec 28 5:30 SHSID Stallions vs Pinghe Huskies
Mens SSSBL: Wed Dec 30 5:30 SHSID Stallions vs Pinghe Huskies
Be sure to come check out our two home games next week vs the Pinghe Huskies. The Huskies are a very familiar team for the womens team as they faced off against each other in the SSSBL 2018-19 championship game, with the Stallions eventually taking gold. The Stallions womens faced two crushing injuries last game and although Barbie was able to return late in the game vs KCIS, the status of both Barbie and Passion is questionable.
For the boys, they will be looking to quit hurting themselves with costly mistakes that have kept opponents in games. They need to do a better job of finishing shots around the rim and making sure they push the pace to make up for their lack of size.
Look around campus for raffle tickets placed at various school buildings. Be sure to grab one and bring it to the games so you don’t miss out on the chance of winning cool Stallions prizes! (Tickets valid for both Monday and Wednesdays games)
