4月21日，2016裡約奧運會聖火在希臘奧林匹亞赫拉神廟正式點燃，拉開了火炬傳遞的帷幕。

北京奧運火炬的造型的設計靈感來自中國傳統的紙捲軸。紙是中國四大發明之一。源於漢代的漆紅色在火炬上的運用使之明顯區別於往屆奧運會火炬設計，祥雲圖案和立體浮雕式的工藝設計使整個火炬高雅華麗、內涵厚重。
2004年雅典奧運會
火炬的設計靈感來源於橄欖葉的形狀，火炬的手把為金銀兩色的金屬和木質材料構成。設計師融入了「萬物適中」的設計理念，火炬外形簡潔美觀。人性、綠色的設計和流暢的線條使雅典奧運火炬本身成為聖火的延伸，巧妙的設計使得火焰在燃燒時呈現出噴薄向上的動感。
2000年雪梨奧運會
雪梨奧運會火炬的設計理念來自雪梨歌劇院的建築輪廓、太平洋蔚藍的海水以及「飛去來器」精妙的弧線。該火炬體分為三層，分別象徵著土、火和水。
