同學們在某些獵奇新聞上肯定都讀到過類似的信息：某地今日刮龍捲風，結果龍捲風將河裡的魚一併帶上高空，風力在別處減弱後，在當地下了一場「魚」雨。今天我要給大家分享一個看起來十分類似的英語表達：

Rain是「下雨」的意思，cat和dog大家都知道是「貓」和「狗」。那麼rain cats and dogs是天上下了一堆貓和狗嗎？當然不是。Rain cats and dogs是說「雨下得非常大，傾盆大雨」。

這個短語起源於17世紀，具體詞源不可考，一說是17世紀整個歐洲的下水系統非常不好，一到大雨天，排水不及，就會把下水道裡的流浪貓和流浪狗的屍體衝刷出來，街道上漂浮著很多小動物的body。

第二種說法就溫和許多：在17世紀的歐洲，農民的家通常是茅草覆蓋的，動物可以爬進茅草裡躲避風雨，但是風雨太大就會紛紛掉出來。
