Monks in red robes
Prayer flags fluttering in the wind
Prayer wheels rotating
Heart-touching marvels everywhere
Blue sky, white clouds, green mountains and clear water
these are key elements
that contribute to the fabulous natural scenery of Bhutan.
From the subtropical south
to the temperate highlands
and polar regions of the north,
Bhutan is renowned for
its beautiful scenery
and rich biodiversity.
Here there are thousand-year old conifers
which stand tall and awe-inspiring.
Over the past centuries,
uncontrolled deforestation has not happened.
The Bhutanese, who are mostly faithful Buddhists,
consider the natural environment as their lifeblood.
Although higher education is not prevalent,
the notion that human beings should live in harmony
with nature has long been embedded in the people’s hearts.
During our young days,
we don’t have much things to use like you know toys.
We don't have much things.
We have only limited things where we can play around.
That is the limitation.
And our parents my parents especially my grandpa,
he is really a great teacher
he always instructs me not to harm others you know,
be always good to others.
He’s so compassionate.
This family education is plain
but profound.
It reveals the fact that, between humans,
and between humans and their external environment,
only harmony can bring us more freedom
and a more wonderful life.
Here there is pure and fresh air,
melodies produced from the rivers that flow unceasingly
and music from all sorts of insects and birds.
There are still covered bridges,
awe-inspiring Buddhist stupas,
lush fields and faithful people.
The Bhutanese have a strong love for their own country.
They are highly disciplined.
The use of plastic bags is prohibited in this country.
Here we can often see
people carrying woven bags
picking up rubbish along their way.
It’s very clean everywhere, down the main streets,
small lanes or little countryside paths.
This is a world full of poetic
and pictorial splendour.
Every morning, our driver would give our van
a good clean, making it look shiny,
welcoming the start of a new day.
This also reminds us that
no matter where we go
or what we see,
we should always
maintain vivid awareness.
The government here pays great attention
to environmental protection.
No one is allowed to cut down trees
or fish without permission.
No one is allowed to exploit fields
or build factories
without permission.
People are trying to
avoid their traditional culture being contaminated.
Since I was young,
limitations on the use of plastic bags has been implemented
When we go shopping,
no plastic bags are provided
and we need to bring our own shopping bags.
Here the best demonstration of kindness
exists a harmonious relationship
established between human beings and animals.
Good thoughts are our best companions.
Brow is the national bird of Bhutan
and is considered as a holy bird.
When traveling on the road,
one can frequently see many different wild animals.
When these animals cross the road,
drivers always stop patiently to let them pass.
When we were taking a break on our way,
we saw rhesus macaques
happily playing in the forest,
enjoying their life in this peaceful, pure land.
In fact, the practice of virtue
and the accumulation of meritcan be very simple
it means being kind to all the living beings you meet.
This is the lifestyle that the Bhutanese adopt.
Because of their religious belief,
no animals are killed in this country.
Most of the people here are vegetarian
so as to cultivate their loving kindness and compassion.
No slaughtering is allowed in Bhutan.
No one can kill animals.
While some people may eat meat,
it is all imported
from India.
The Bhutanese government has been trying
to strengthen their control over this matter.
In addition, it is a government policy that
people should commit to vegetarianism
for at least six months a year.
During certain religious periods,
such as the first month of the Tibetan lunar calendar,
the selling of meat is prohibited
throughout the entire country.
Through these means,
the Bhutanese have their meat consumption restricted.
In previous time I think most of them used to eat meat,
not veg.
But now so many changes are coming up you know,
and we have a lot many associations animal saving trust
and even they are trying to create a day
for a vegetarian day.
So now if you see most of the people now,
if you in Thimphu,if you look, most of them are vegetarian.
I think Bhutanese even the education system initiate that
I think you know to love animals rather than eat animals
The charming beauty of Bhutan
exists in its natural scenery.
All mountains, rivers and land have their soul.
In such a beautiful natural environment,
all we can see
are manifestations of peace and harmony.
After weakening the violence
and the craving in our soul,
we will be able to experience happiness and joy.
Amitabha!
Now we are in a special country in the world
where the national priority is GNH rather than GDP.
After leaving the airplane,
one can sense
the country’s relaxing and joyful atmosphere.
This is because the people here
pay great reverence towards nature.
There are no chemical plants
but green mountains, clear water,
blue sky and white clouds.
When we came here for the first time,
the Prime Minister came to greet us in the hotel.
He mentioned that
the most important source of happiness in this country
is their national religious belief.
They have genuine faith in Buddhism
and guide themselves with Buddhist views
and doctrines.
From the king to the economically disadvantaged,
they are all practitioners of Buddha-dharma.
Accordingly, happiness here is a deep spiritual happiness
with an internal-external impact.
The beautiful mind-state of the Bhutanese
has given this land love and care,
and this wonderful land has in turn
nurtured the people of the country.
I sincerely hope that our beautiful Earth
can become how it was originally,
as beautiful as Bhutan;
that all human beings can love
and cherish this Earth,
the way the Bhutanese love their own country;
that all people in the world can be joyous
and content at all times, as the Bhutanese are,
leading a truly happy life every day.
Amitabha!
