Chinese swimmer Xin Xin won the first gold medal for China in open water swimming at the 18th FINA World Championships on Sunday in Gwangju, about 330 km south of South Korea's capital Seoul. Xin handed her country their first open water gold in the history of the FINA World Championships following a frantic finish.

Xin finished in a time of one hour, 54 minutes, 47:20 seconds. The 22-year old, who finished fourth in the same event at the Rio Olympics, is now guaranteed a spot at next year’s Olympics in Tokyo.
Xin was just 0.90 second ahead of Haley Anderson of the United States who came in second on the third day of the worlds. Rachele Bruni of Italy came away with bronze in 1:54:49.90.
"It was my dream to become a world champion. It was my great honor to raise our national flag and listen to the national anthem on top of the podium, Maybe I should bring my awarding suit all the time. I believe that I can swim better and better in the future," Xin
Xin secured the first ticket among 64 contestants for the 10km open-water marathon at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Japan. The 10km marathon swimming debuted at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

In the women's water polo preliminary round, China nailed a victory over Japan 8-6 in the Group D match. Chinese athletes will fight against Australia on Tuesday and against Italy on Thursday for the tournament.
