After attending the launch for the lululemon stores in Lujiazui today, I got home, covered in sweat at about 5pm. Night had already fallen. When I got to the door I was surprised to find my friend Hao Ling sitting on the floor with all her suitcases! Shouldn’t she already be in Hangzhou, getting ready to fly back to London? Why was she still here!
There was a security guard next to her. She said she』d forgotten to take her mobile phone and the key was locked inside the flat. She』d been trying to find a way to get in the flat since 3pm; she』d asked property management for my mobile number but couldn’t reach me since my Android phone had run out of battery at about 2pm and I didn’t think to charge my phone while I was at the launch party.
We opened the door, got inside and searched the flat from top to bottom multiple times but we couldn’t find it. I helped her rifle through every pocket but we still couldn’t find it.
「This is so weird, how can it just disappear like that? After I packed all my bags I took a few photos of the flat to keep as a memory, so my phone definitely can’t be in my luggage…」
I made her think back to the details, like what time she realised her phone was missing.
She had had both hands dragging a suitcase each and hadn’t even reached the subway station when she realised her phone wasn’t there any more and thought she』d left it at home, so she went back.
I asked her if she』d encountered any strange people on the way to the station. She started by saying no, but there were a couple of guys who passed by.
I remembered an incident when I』d just graduated from university in Fuzhou. I was cycling to work one day, listening to my MP4 player which I』d tucked away in my coat pocket. I was just cycling along, when suddenly the music stopped, so I pulled over, put my hand in my pocket and… What! Where was my MP4?! I looked around me and there was no one near me! What the hell! I retraced my steps for about ten metres and the road was clear… Suddenly, a man rushed past, snorting with laughter. I felt like it was pretty suspicious of him. I passed by and said my MP4 was missing. He said, 「You think it was me? Search me!」 So I patted him down and inspected every pocket but there was nothing. Nothing could be done. He carried on looking at me, smirking.
I told Hao Ling about my experience and she thought about it more carefully. 「I』d barely left the building with her luggage. Five minutes later, a guy in front of me shouted something and then chased after a guy who happened to be behind me. But that’s impossible! If he』d stolen my phone, how could I not feel him take it from my pocket?」
So we did an experiment. She usually puts her phone in her coat pocket. I told her to look away, and from behind I took her mobile. There was only a slight sound, which, even in the quiet room, was barely noticeable. Even then she couldn’t feel it at all, let alone in the actual situation, when she was outside, with both her hands on the suitcases, in a rush, and totally vulnerable.
We speculated that the guys around her were thieves working together. She totally fit the typical victim’s criteria:
1. Her phone was in her coat pocket.
2. She was about to go travelling on her own.
3. She was carrying her luggage in both hands.
4. She was in a rush.
Hao Ling’s WeChat Wallet still had a fair amount of money in it. If some bad person was able to find the password, they could access her WeChat and possibly scam her friends. Luckily Hao Ling could remember her login details and used my mobile phone and got some help from a couple of her friends to send a verification code to confirm her identity, and was able to login to WeChat on my phone and changed her WeChat password.
Unfortunately she』d lost the photos she』d taken the past couple of days. The phone was just an iPhone 4, which pretty much nobody uses any more. It was her friend’s old mobile phone. But the thief didn’t have time to see what model her phone was when he was stealing it.
The reason why she was using her friend’s phone is because 16 days ago, on 2nd December, she left her Redmi 2 in a taxi… She said, 「They decided to keep my phone.」
I think between December and January, thieves in China work especially hard to get enough money to go home for the new year.
Last week I went to MOZZOS to do an interview and learnt that their office computers were stolen. Even though all the CCTV cameras were on, the thief was able to take full advantage of the fact that there was nobody around.
Most people are less worried about losing their electronic devices, and more worried about what’s inside that’s important to us, but the thieves have no real use for the data and content in the phone.
Solutions?
Be well prepared.
We can't control other people's mind and behavior. All we can do is be mindful, and minimise the loss in case it is stolen.
1 - Cloud storage - Keep notes and inspiration in cloud notebooks, such as Evernote, and Youdao Note in China. Auto-sync photos/videos on your phone to Dropbox or Baidu Yun when connected to Wifi. I am using Android; my phone contacts are synced to my Google contact.
2 - Protection: Make sure your WeChat and Alipay accounts have secure passwords. And leave yours or your emergency contact's email or phone number on your screen saver or on your phone case. Make it easy for someone who wants to return your belongings to you.
3 - Don't keep valuable things in your coat pocket. All my Nokias got stolen when I left them there, so I learnt my lesson. And if you can, buy those practically designed coats with zip pockets, or those that have a inner safety pocket.
4 - Always keep your valuables within eye contact, and keep an eye on your back too. For example, a backpack with your passport, or a little bamboo bike.
5 - If you don't have a wallet, you won't lose a wallet. My dad taught me to separate money into different locations. And I learnt to use a wallet which doesn't look like a wallet.
6 - Be mindful and calm, when you are out. Get enough sleep, keep a healthy diet and get some physical exercise.
Get Self-defence skills for Emergency Situations
What if the bad guys (in Chinese, we call it Bad Eggs) want not only your valuable belongings, but also to harm your body? - The answer is self defence!
Here is a FAQ from people after I came back from my 18-month adventure in South East Asia alone with my bamboo bike, which I call "Little Prince." Did you encounter any dangerous situations?
- Yes!
1 - When I was in Siem Reap, having been feeling feverish for a few days, I still pushed myself to go for a bike ride round Angkor Wat before leaving the city. After I had a water break under the burning sun, I fell down with the bike when trying to get back on my bike. I was bruised and bloodied.
2 - Once in Bali, I kept my phone and wallet in the outside pocket of my backpack when riding on my bike. When a truck carrying hundreds of chickens passed me by, I stopped and took out my phone for photos. However, I was too excited to zip my pocket. A few kilometers later, I found my wallet had disappeared, which contained all my debit cards, credit cards, 1 million Indonesian rupia and a few hundred US dollars. It was already dark, I had half a bottle of water, and another 20+km uphill.
3 - Another time in Bali, on my way back home from the Bali Spirit Festival after party in Ubud, I was cycling, when a guy on motorbike rode past me, and he suddenly grabbed my chest with his hand. I was shocked, and fell off with my bike on the road, injured.
So what can you do? Stop going out alone? Stop going out at night? Keep on feeling scared?
But I still want to keep travelling the world!
So I started looking for self-defence teachers in Asia.
I want to be stronger and learn how to protect myself when I have to.
Dec. 6th, I got back to Shanghai, and luckily I saw an ad for Defence Lab, which was exactly what I needed. So I signed up and went for a class with my friend Maggie. We learnt a lot in the first class. So if I am available in Shanghai, every Sunday afternoon I will go to take the self defence class with Master Ivan.
And I think self-defence classes would be an awesome gift that I can share with my family, friends and women and kids I will meet when I am travelling.
Share Love and Positive Energy
However, only becoming more aware or backing up data and gaining self defence skills is not enough. How can we solve this problem at its very root? Why do they steal? Why do they choose to hurt others?
If they ever learnt yoga, and applied two yamas of yoga, "Asteya/non-stealing", "Ahimsa/non-violence," in their daily life, they might have a very different choice.
If they are able to make enough money with their other skills, having enough positive energy, they might not choose to harm others.
In Thailand, Kay Wararuk, the legendary survivor of cancer, my first Laughter Yoga Teacher, she and her students brought Laughter Yoga Training Courses to prison. They not only trained the prisoners' body and mind, but also shared the love from the community to them, all the while teaching them a new skill, "teaching laughter yoga". So when they get out from prison, they can have more job opportunities.
After my yoga teacher training in Lombok with Indra Namaha Yoga, my biggest change is that, I won't curse those people who did bad things to hurt us, and I don't want to use my valuable time to hate them. Non-Violence. And I am practising not letting their mistakes affect my positivity. They will have their own life lessons sooner or later. All I can do is keep on doing good things with good intentions, and helping others to live happy and healthy lifestyles ;)
How?
After I wrote this long article, I was thinking whether to translate it into English. I asked Hao Ling, "Let me send you my draft on WeChat."
And she replied: "How?"
And then I remembered she didn't have a phone...
Then we realized that we'd better call the police. Although there is no hope to get back the mobile phone and data in it, we still called 110. At least, the police know what happened, and may increase the security control level. Maybe by doing this, fewer people in our community will have their phone stolen in the same spot.
The police officer told us, the exits of Jiuting Metro station are under their control, but they seldom check the road between our building to the metro exit, where the incident happened. Seems the thieves are experienced.
Thanks Hao Ling for translating this article.
Hope it has deepened your understanding of "take care."
Have a safe and happy new year!!
