Wheeling round, a look of utter shock on its face, a marmot jumps in fright after a fox sneaks up behind it. The split-second encounter between prey and predator – called the Moment – has won the man who captured it the title of Wildlife Photographer of the Year, which is developed and produced by the Natural History Museum in London.

Photographer Bao Yongqing took the picture on a meadow in China's Qilian Mountains National Nature Reserve, beating 48,000 entries from 100 countries. "Photographically, it is quite simply the perfect moment," said Roz Kidman Cox, the chair of the judging panel. "To have captured such a powerful interaction between a Tibetan fox and a marmot - two species key to the ecology of this high-grassland region – is extraordinary."

3D printer makes meat in space

The prospect of astronauts tucking into a roast dinner has grown slightly closer after a successful experiment used a 3D printer to create meat on the International Space Station. The bioprinter produced beef, rabbit and fish tissue using magnetic fields in microgravity, a Russian medical technology company involved in the experiment said.

"It's one small nibble for man, one giant bite for mankind," said Yusef Khesuani of 3D Bioprinting Solutions, the Russian laboratory that created the bioprinter.

Ninja student gets top marks

A Japanese student of ninja history who handed in a blank paper was given top marks - after her professor realized the essay was written in invisible ink. Eimi Haga followed the ninja technique of "aburidashi", spending hours soaking and crushing soybeans to make the ink. The words appeared when her professor heated the paper over his gas stove.
