今天知新共學外刊群筆記大大Zoe整理了關於最近澳洲山火的新聞。我才算更深入了解了這個事件。就像其中一篇外媒新聞說的：Climate change is partly to blame for Australia's bushfires. 這場肆虐多時的山火再次引起了人們對環境保護、氣候變暖的關注。

澳洲山火已燃燒數月有餘，the worst is yet to come...細數過去這些年，震驚世界的大火比如巴黎聖母院大火、巴西博物館大火還有亞馬遜森林大火……給整個世界和人類文明都帶來的巨大的損失。今天和大家分享一些在描寫此次澳洲山火的新聞中的好用表達，可用於翻譯、英文寫作中。smoke still hung thick over somewhereSmoke still hung thick over the south-east of the country on Wednesday evening, even as weather conditions offered a reprieve to take stock of the destruction.表示某地依然濃煙滾滾，hung的原型是hang，不及物動詞，表示懸掛。thick是形容詞作狀語，體現煙的濃度之大。接下來就要到春節了，家家戶戶放鞭炮，城市上空煙霧瀰漫：Smoke hung in the air above the city.再比如經濟學人早年有一篇關於印度霧霾的報導，裡面有句話是這樣的：As winds died, the air chilled, smoke from the burning of rice stubble in surrounding farmland drifted in and the city's thick traffic resumed, the index failed to go down again.風不吹了，天也冷了，附近農場裡燃燒稻梗產生的煙霧飄到城市裡，城裡又恢復了往日的車水馬龍，（空氣汙染）指數便居高不下了。
The ferocity of the fires meant many people were unable to find out basic information until New Year’s Day.ferocity，名詞，形容詞是ferocious，兇猛的，猛烈的。Thousands of Parisians watched in horror from behind police cordons as a ferocious blaze devastated Notre Dame Cathedral on Monday night, destroying its spire and a large part of the roof.（The Guardian）還有horrible, devastating, enormous都可以直接用來修飾fire, blaze, flames，體現火災的可怖。While fires rage across the continent, conditions have been especially perilous in Australia’s New South Wales, home to the city of Sydney.rage [I] if a fire or illness rages, it spreads fast and is hard to control〔火災或疾病〕迅速蔓延，快速擴散The fire raged for twelve hours and fifteen people died. 大火肆虐了12個小時，造成15人死亡。A great cholera epidemic raged across Europe in 1831. 1831 年歐洲各地霍亂肆虐。類似的用於搭配火或者爆炸的動詞還可以用rip through 裂開，破開；突進，橫撞直闖，比如：A total of 83 homes were damaged in a powerful explosion that ripped through an apartment building in Baotou，Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region，killing five and injuring dozens on 25. 25日，內蒙古包頭一幢住宅樓發生爆炸，83戶居民房屋受損，導致5人死亡，數十人受傷。fire ripped through her bungalow. 大火迅速吞沒了她的平房。through還可以與動詞sweep搭配，用於描寫火勢，比如之前美國加州森林大火的新聞：One of 18 wildfires sweeping through California, among the worst in the state's history, is generating such heat that it created its own weather.sweeping through California，現在分詞做後置定語，修飾one (wildfire)。sweep原意是「橫掃」，sweep through California，席捲加州的大火。另外，這句話中涉及到such + adj. + that從句，太……以致於……，這場大火產生的熱量導致當地都形成了某種局部天氣。除了create its own weather，我們還可以用somewhere on fire/smouldering/sweltering 來體現火災當地所處的狀態。比如NBC的這個新聞標題：Australia on fire, literally, and so are its climate politicson fire有兩個意思。著火，這是字面意思，也就是標題裡的literally，Australia on fire，澳大利亞著火了。on fire還有一個引申義，表示在興頭上，非常激動，its climate politics on fire，注意這個politics搭配的謂語動詞是are複數，說明politics此處是可數名詞複數，個人政見的意思，政客就氣候問題展開激辯，大概是這樣的意思。More than 100 bushfires are raging in Australia as the continent swelters under record heat.smoulder也是不及物動詞，悶燒，比如之前經濟學人一篇關於全球氣候變暖的文章，第一句上來就是：Earth is smouldering. 地球在悶燒。整個澳洲也在悶燒：Australia is smouldering.還有其他小詞也可以用來形容火災。比如去年華盛頓郵報在報導巴西博物館火災時用的這個詞：
But the fire probably consumed countless other pieces of Brazil's patrimony（祖傳的財產，遺產）.原意是指掏出內臟，有引申義：毀壞〔建築物〕的內部，比如The building was completely gutted by fire. 大樓被火燒空了。取這個意思時多用被動態，而且特別指被火燒毀：There have been no injuries reported after an enormous fire gutted Rio de Janeiro's National Museum on Sunday, but the toll was still immense. Firefighters are still battling at least 12 emergency-level blazes across New South Wales after a day of "catastrophic" fire risk in heavily populated parts of the state.（CNN）battle這個詞適用範圍很廣，鬥爭，搏鬥。賓語也可以是病魔，比如：He battled cancer for four years. 他同癌症鬥爭了四年。I had to battle hard just to stay afloat. 我得用力掙扎才能勉強浮住。keep/bring the fire under control都可以表示滅火、控制火勢。比如關於巴黎聖母院大火的新聞中這句話：A fire that devastated Notre Dame Cathedral in the heart of Paris was brought under control by firefighters in the early hours of Tuesday morning, though officials warned there were still residual fires to put out.But while the flames have been subdued, they stoked Brazilians' ire.就在大火已被撲滅的時候，巴西人們的怒火卻被點燃了。smoke still hung thick over somewhere;rage across, rip through, sweep through;(fire, blaze, etc.) generate such heat that it created its own weather.keep/bring fire under control;
