China Re-opens to more than 77 Countries, but...

2021-02-20 ChengduExpat
Currently 77 countries are on the list of citizens who can possibly return to China. Yes, only possibly. Restrictions, very few and expensive flights, and a 14 days obligatory/ paid quarantine are a few of the many requirements still in place to re enter China.Below is the updated list, more info on international flights, and details of the documents and criteria needed to return.

Things to note before reading:

If you are a citizen of a listed country, you will still be required to take and receive a negative nucleic acid test up to 5 days prior to boarding.

You will still be subject to local quarantine policies after landing in China.

It appears you will need a new visa and dependant on which visa you most likely need a PU letter (issued by the local Foreign Affairs Office).

Please contact your local embassy/consulate for details as confirmation of what process to follow.

So, What documents do I need?

Although all embassies and consulate are different and may have different policies (so please do check!) the Chinese Embassy and Consulates Generals in the U.K. has released more details of which documents are needed for each visa that are currently accepted. Take a look below.

1. British citizens and applicants from any of the 35 other European countries who are holding a valid Foreigner’s Residence Permit (sample attached below) of China for work, private matters or family reunion, and need to go to China for the same visiting purpose as shown on the Residence Permit.

Please bring:

The application form

A photocopy of the passport information page

A photocopy of the valid resident permit

A copy of the birth certificate if the applicant is under 18, and other supporting documents.

2. Applicant (inc. the accompanying spouse and children under the age of 18) who does not hold a valid Foreigner’s Residence Permit of China for work, private matters or family reunion, but has an "Invitation Letter (PU/TE)" or "Verification Confirmation of Invitation" issued by the Foreign Affairs Office of the provincial government of the intended visit, or by the provincial Department of Commerce to visit China for economic, trade, scientific, technological, culture or sports purposes;

Please bring:

The application form

The copy of PU/TE letter

A photocopy of the passport information page

A copy of the birth certificate if the applicant is under 18, and other supporting documents

3. Applicant (Inc. the accompanying spouse and children under the age of 18) who does not hold a valid Foreigner’s Residence Permit of China for work, private matters or family reunion, but has obtained "Notification Letter of Foreigners Work Permit" as well as "Invitation Letter (PU/TE)" or "Verification Confirmation of Invitation" to work in China;

Please bring:

4. Applicants who intend to visit China for the following humanitarian reasons:

Please bring:

Photocopies of a medical certificate or death certificate

Proof of relationships (Inc. birth certificate, marriage certificate, Chinese household registration, certificate letters from the local police bureau in China, notarial certificate of kinship, etc.)

An invitation letter from relatives in China is required.

B) Spouse and children under the age of 18 of a Chinese citizen or  a foreigner who holds a valid Chinese Foreign Permanent Resident ID Card, to visit China for family reunion;

Please bring:

7. All applicants are required to fill in the online application form and make an appointment to the nearest Chinese Visa Application Centre before submitting applications in person. Minor children under the age of 14 or adult over 70 are not required to go to the Visa Centre for biometric information collection but also need to make an appointment.

8. Please note visa applications for other visiting purposes which are not included above can not be accepted at the moment.

Once you have managed to make it over the first visa hurdle but then you may run into your second barrier. Previously, flights where few and far between which meant awful layovers. Not to mention the prices were through the roof. However, things are slowly looking up as more international flights are confirmed.

Currently there are confirmed flights to Chengdu from Manila, Phnom Penh, Singapore, Kathmandu, Vancouver, and Frankfurt. Please check the link below for the updated international flight schedule:
