What does a group of people think about another group of people? Answer: everything!
Some Japanese don't think much of China (mainly right-wingers).
Some Japanese think China is a powder-keg and will self-destruct or at least fall into civil war (some Japanese have been thinking this for many decades).
Some Japanese like China but worry about the gov*ment of China.
Some Japanese love Chinese history and have general positive feelings about the country.
Some Japanese love kung-fu films and think everyone in China is secretly a martial arts master.
And on and on. You will find as many opinions as there are people.
Based on all the Japanese I have talked to in my ten years in country and all I've seen and read, I might offer a general answer is:
Japanese like China and the Chinese people in general (though they think they are often rude/loud/selfish), but aren't so happy about the Chinese gove*ment and wish they would stop bringing up WW2 so often* (and suspect the reason they do bring it up so often has more to do with distracting the public from domestic problems than anything else). They worry about pollution from China and complain endlessly about Chinese sand (Asian Dust). They love Chinese food but think it's too oily. They worry about industry jobs leaving this country for that one. They admire traditional Chinese wisdom and everyone knows someone who swears Chinese medicine is much better than Western medicine. They think the language is crazy difficult.
Now note, these are just my ideas as I sum up everything I've heard, read, seen, etc, in my time here. I do not claim to speak for the Japanese themselves nor could I, since (as I mentioned above) everyone has a different opinion and there is no collective single viewpoint.
*: Let's not open this can of worms here. Plenty of questions and answers already on Quora about the matter.

China is a country of romantic longing for me.
I’m around forties now, I was watching Chinese romantic programs frequently on television from I was small.
There was a "Godaigo" (the Japanese rock band), and they were singing a song of "西遊記ーMagic monkey " .I felt 「It’s very cool」.youtube here:Monkey Magic
Also, I remember that the TV program of 「Silk Road」 did with NHK and it was a little boom in 80’s Japanese society.
When I got a little bigger, I learned "漢詩ーChinese poetry" at school. I was impressed by the incomparable beauty of that character world what never experienced.
Even now I am proud that "漢字ーKanji" are the most beautiful character in the world!!
Then I wached many wonderful Chinese films. I became a fan of Chinese movies.
「Last emperor」 by Bernardo Bertolucci,成龍-Jackie Chan, 張 芸謀-Zhang Yimou and 王家衛- Wong Kar Wai movies were all very excellent.(also I figured out such Chinese directors infuluence from the Japanese culture like a K -Pop,I noticed that integrating Japanese influence at a much higher level.)
A Chinese friend of mine was also made at a hotel in Tokyo at a part-time job.we played a parody of politicians of each other, played a jokes at work, went to a hospital when he became sick, we were good friends.
Compared with Korean culture, Korean culture is much modern, sharp and Westernize, Chinese culture has traditional, relaxed sweetness and sentimental feeling for me.
Even above the newspaper and this Quora, there are various political problems between China and Japan, but as an individual one has a sense of affinity and respect.
It is good to have mutual understanding beyond the relationship that reflects the Cold War structure and invisible pressure of Western country,as there are things that are not in each other.

93% of Japanese have negative views on China. That’s a research carried out in 2015.
I speak Japanese and one of my interests is logging onto Twitter to see how Japanese people think about China. 「A nasty giant noisy uncivilized north Korea in which the only industry is sweat factories producing fake low-quality junk.」 Can perfectly conclude what I saw.
Here are some typical Tweets spreading in Japanese society.
「China’s economy will collapse in 5 years.」 (Which we have been hearing for more than 10 years)
「Chinese never sent a man to space. The video of the astronaut moving inside the spaceship was shot under water.」
「Nanjing massacre never happened/ Nanjing massacre was done by Chinese.」
「Chinese races are proved by scientists as inferior.」
…
And you know what, these kind of bullshits receive thousands of likes and reposts.
I won’t blame Japanese people for being ignorant. Common people always have their opinions molded by what the mainstream media says. Japan simply makes no exception.

I am very fond of China and its people. I studied the language for four years (before I gave up) and backpacked my way around the country. Everyone I interacted on a personal level (inside and outside China) was friendly and hard working. Plus they have gorgeous landscapes, awesome food, and a panda research base!
As country as a whole…. I think that China is a serious security threat in East Asia, and the gov*ment is oppressive. At the same time, I am also painfully aware that information is biased. What I read (in Japanese or sometimes English even) has at least some sprinkling of hints of impending Chinese domination, and that they are going to slaughter us because they hate us all. I cringe at the comments on Yahoo! Japan news articles reporting on Chinese anything, of their bigotedness and ignorance. But I believe the same goes for the Chinese media too. They probably read all the hideous things about Japan written in Chinese, and not bother learning about what the opposite side has to say.
Currently, according to the polls, the Japanese impression on China isn’t great at all. I just hope that, though difficult as it may be, that the each side tries to make an effort to learn from each other without media bias. Then I think it quickly becomes apparent that neither side is as monstrous as the media depicts.
