#U.S. women’s right to vote turns 100- Adelina Otero-Warren
In 1917, Adelina Otero-Warren was tapped by leading suffragist Alice Paul to head the New Mexico chapter of the Congressional Union for Woman Suffrage, an organization formed in 1913 to campaign for a constitutional amendment guaranteeing women’s suffrage.
The Congressional Union brought renewed energy to the American suffrage movement and shifted attention away from state voting rights toward a federal suffrage amendment.
Otero-Warren's leadership proved crucial to the movement in New Mexico and garnered support for suffrage among Spanish and English-speaking communities.
On August 18, 1920, the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified, granting women the right to vote.
