The 1st Far Eastern Championship Games (FECG) were held in Manila, capital of the Philippines, from February 1 to 9, 1913. This was the first time that China had sent a delegation to an international game. The Philippines, a U.S. colony which was better developed in competitive sports, finished first in overall scores, followed by China in the second place and Japan in the third.
The origin of FECG can be dated back to the Carnival held every February in Manila, the Philippines, in the early 20th century. A variety of sporting events was usually held during the celebration, for which athletes from China and Japan had also been invited to participate.
Around 1910, the Philippine Sports Organization decided to organize the FECG in a form similar to the Olympics with participation from China, Japan, the Philippines, etc. After that, ten FECGs were held in the Philippines, China and Japan during the period from 1913 to 1934. It was the earliest regional games in Asia, where athletics, swimming, basketball, volleyball, football, steel ball, baseball, boxing and cycling were contested.
