Hey what's up, Stefanie the English coach here from EnglishFullTime. com. In this video, I'm going to answer the question "Will reading out loud help me improve my pronunciation and speaking skills?"
嗨,大家好,我是你們的英語老師Stefanie,來自EnglishFullTime.com。在這期視頻課中,我會來回答一下這個問題:「大聲朗讀會不會幫助我提高發音和口語能力呢?」
Now the simple answer is that "yes, it will help in some ways but there are better methods." And I don't recommend that you primarily use this method reading out loud to improve your pronunciation and your speaking skills.
簡單來說,「會的,在某種程度上會有所幫助,但是還有更好的辦法。」所以說,我並不推薦你一開始就用這種方式來提高你的發音和口語能力。
So I'm going to explain why in this video. Okay, so several months ago I wrote an email about this to all of my subscribers and one person wrote back.
這次我就來解釋一下。幾個月前,我給粉絲們寫了一封關於這個問題的郵件,其中有一個人回復了。
And he was so angry and he was like: "how can you say that reading out loud isn't the best method for improving our pronunciation and our speaking skills?" "This is what we've been taught this is what our teachers have shown us, this is what we all do."
他特別生氣,說:「怎麼能說大聲朗讀不是提高口語和發音的最好方法呢?」「這可是從小老師就教我們的啊,所有人都是這麼做的。」
And first of all, I was kind of like "okay, just because that's what everybody does and that's what you're being taught doesn't mean that that's the best method, right?" The reason why reading out loud is not the best way to practice your pronunciation is because words in English, and I say this all the time, are not pronounced the way that they are written.
首先,我覺得,即便是所有人都這麼做,即便是老師一直這麼教的,也不一定就意味著這是最好的方法,對吧?大聲朗讀並不是最好的方法原因在於,我經常提到,英語單詞的發音,並不是他們寫出來那樣的。
In fact, words in English often have nothing to do their pronunciation has nothing to do with the way they're written. We have silent letters, we have confusing letter combinations.
實際上,英語單詞很多拼寫跟發音都完全沒關係。我們有不發音的字母,有令人摸不著頭腦的字母組合。
You know, when we're speaking, we cut off the ends of words, we add sounds, we eliminate sounds. And when you are reading text on a page, that text is flat.
我們說話的時候,會去掉詞尾的一些發音,也會加上一些發音之類的。我們從書面角度去讀的時候,文字只是一個平面。
You can't read what intonation you're supposed to speak with. You can't read what emphasis you're supposed to put on which syllable.
你讀不出來需要用什麼語調。你不知道自己該在哪個音節上重音。
You can't read any of that information. So reading the words on a page, you could be reading them incorrectly and who's gonna be there to correct you, right?
這些信息都是你從書面讀不出來的。所以只是讀書面的這些詞,你可能就讀錯了,而且誰在旁邊糾正你呢?
Who's gonna be there to say: "Hey, no, you keep messing up right there. You keep doing that, that's not how it's done." If you're just reading out loud, you could be practicing something incorrectly and then practicing it consistently incorrectly.
誰會在旁邊跟你說:「你讀錯了,你一直這麼讀的都不對。」如果你只是大聲朗讀出來,有可能你讀的就是錯的,然後一遍一遍重複錯誤的發音。
And then you're gonna solidify an incorrect language pattern in your mind. Simply put, you cannot read sounds, you can hear sounds.
這樣的話,你就有可能把錯誤發音固定在你的腦海中。簡單來說,你沒法「讀」發音,但是你可以「聽」發音。
So if you're trying to improve your pronunciation, you should not be reading and then trying to pronounce. You should be listening and then imitating what you hear.
所以你想要提高自己的發音水平,你不應該只是讀。而是聽,然後模仿。
Because your ears will not deceive you but your eyes will. You'll read a word and you'll see a silent letter there, and you won't realize it's silent, so you think you have to pronounce it, right?
因為你的耳朵不會欺騙你,但是眼睛會。你看到一個詞,裡面有一個不發音的字母,但是你並不知道它不發音,還以為它還是按照正常發音的。
Your eyes are deceiving you. They're making you think that you need to pronounce a word in a certain way when you don't.
你的眼睛會欺騙你。他們會讓你在不需要發音的時候認為自己需要發音。
So rather you should listen to words, listen to sentences, listen to audio clips and just imitate what you hear, right? Many of you know this as "shadowing".
比起這樣,你不如聽單詞,聽句子,聽廣播,然後模仿你聽到的東西。可能很多人都知道,這種方法叫做「影子訓練」。
You're shadowing what you hear, you're saying it as you're hearing it or you're pausing the audio, pausing the video, and then repeating what you just heard. And then replay those audios again and again, listen repeat, listen repeat.
你跟讀你聽到的東西,然後模仿,聽一部分,然後暫停,接著重複你聽到的東西。然後再一遍一遍聽,聽,重複,聽,重複。
And that way, you will learn to start sounding and speaking more like a native speaker and less like a textbook. A lot of foreign speakers when they speak in English they actually sound like a book.
通過這種方式,你就會說的更像一個母語者,而不是像一本教科書。有很多外國人說英語感覺就像教科書一樣。
Like very choppy, you know, like they're reading one word at a time and pronouncing everything perfectly but nobody speaks like that, right? So reading out loud is not a great method, because your eyes are gonna see separations between words.
非常的不連貫,一個詞一個詞往外蹦,每個詞都說得很好,但是沒人這麼說話。所以說,單純只是大聲朗讀並不是一個非常好的方法,因為你的眼睛會看到每個單詞之間的空隙。
They're gonna see the spaces, and it's gonna give you this idea that "oh my gosh, there's a space here between these words. So I need to make spaces in between my words when I speak."
單詞之間的空格會讓你覺得,「這裡有空格。」「那我應該在我說話的時候也加上停頓。」
And that's simply not true. We run all the words together practically. Okay, you guys, we use so many contractions in English.
這完全是不正確的。我們會把單詞連起來說,我們用各種各樣的連詞。
So again, if you're listening and then repeating what you hear, you're more likely to develop a natural sounding English. Now the other reason why reading out loud won't necessarily help you with your speaking is, because the way that sentences are constructed in a book are not the way that they are spoken in conversation, okay?
所以說,如果你多聽,多跟讀,那麼就更有機會練出自然的發音。還有一個原因就在於,書裡面的句子有時候跟說話並不完全一樣的。
And I'm going to give you an example of this. So I have a book here it's called The E-myth Revisited and here on Chapter 3 the very first sentence goes like this.
我來舉個例子。這裡有一本書,叫做The E-myth Revisited,第三章第一句話是這麼說的。
"It is self-evident that businesses says like people are supposed to grow and with growth comes change." That's a great sentence but it's a great sentence for a book.
"It is self-evident that businesses says like people are supposed to grow and with growth comes change."這是一句很棒的話,但是只是對於一本書來說。
I do not talk like this, okay? So instead of saying "it is self-evident", I would say like, "hey, it's obvious, it's obvious."
我平時不會這麼說話。我不會說"it is self-evident",我可能會說"Hey, it's obvious, it's obvious"。
And instead of starting my sentence like that, I might not even say "it's obvious" cuz when something is obvious we just say it we don't have to say it's obvious. So I would just say "You know, businesses are like people they have to grow."
甚至有可能我連這個都不會說,因為有的時候很多東西非常明顯,所以我們壓根兒就不用強調「很明顯的是」。我可能就說,"You know, businesses are like people they have to grow"。
That's it, that's how I speak. I don't have to speak in this fancy way that this book is written, and this book isn't even that fancy.
我就是這麼說話的。我不會像書裡這麼花裡胡哨,或者文縐縐的。
But as you can see from this sentence here, it still has some pretty complex sentences. And again these sentences are very well-written, but nobody talks like that.
仔細讀一下這句話,你就會發現這句話其實很複雜。這些都是非常好的句子,但是就是沒人這麼說話。
So if you want to learn to speak in a natural way, you have to imitate people. And not even people giving speeches, because the way you speak when you give a speech is a lot different than the way you speak in a conversation.
所以如果你想要自然地表達,那就要模仿別人。甚至不需要模仿那些演講,因為演講的時候說的話跟你平時說的話也有很大區別。
So in conclusion, reading out loud will help you improve reading out loud, okay? If you want to improve your pronunciation, listen and repeat what you hear.
總結來說,大聲朗讀只會幫你提高大聲朗讀的能力。如果你想要提高的是發音,那麼最好的方法還是聽後跟讀。
And if you want to improve your speaking skills, then do that same thing, listen and repeat but engage in conversations with other people where you can practice your speaking skills, and where you can get feedback.
Because in a conversation someone's gonna say, "oh I'm sorry what what do you mean by that?" or "I don't understand what you mean." or "Could you explain that more?" or something like that.
如果你想要提高自己的交流能力,同樣,也要聽,跟讀,但是也要跟別人去對話,而且要得到反饋的那種。因為如果你在跟別人說話的時候,對方說,「抱歉,你剛才說的什麼意思?」或者「我沒理解你剛才說的話。」再或者「你能解釋一下嗎?」
That shows you how you're doing. And likewise, if nobody asks that if nobody says "oh what do you mean", if they just carry on with the conversation and keep going, then that confirms to you that they understood you and you're doing great with your English.
這就表明了你說的怎麼樣。同樣,如果沒人提出問題,正常對話進行下去,那麼就說明他們都完全聽得懂,你英語說得也很不錯。
Okay so if all of this makes sense, please let me know in the comments. And I would love to do more videos like this, where I answer frequently asked questions.
