這節課我們接著聊包含有「up」這個小品詞的動詞短語：
1.Hang up
Hang up這個短語字面意思是「掛上去」，但它還有一個非常重要的引申含義：早期電話剛剛被發明的時候有很多電話機，特別是電話亭裡面的電話機都是掛式的，通話結束的時候就需要把聽筒掛上去完成掛電話的動作，久而久之，hang up這個短語就有了掛電話的意思，而且它通常是指在話沒說完就把電話掛掉。
喜歡看美劇《老友記》的朋友應該都記得下面這個GIF裡這個經典的打電話橋段：
在口語中，掛某人的電話通常用 hang up on somebody的形式表達：例句：Don't you dare hang up on me!
2.Hook up
Hook是鉤子的意思，Hook up的字面含義是將兩個物體連（鉤）在一起。例句：The plumber hooked the pipes up to the shower.
在口語中，hook up也有一個非常常用的引申含義，指與某人發生了隨意的性關係例句：I can't believe you hooked up with my ex-boyfriend!
3.Keep up
Keep up是一個含義非常豐富的動詞短語，這裡我們挑幾個最常用的介紹給大家：
1.跟得上進度例句：You can follow me if you want, but try to keep up.
2.持續關注某事或某人的最新動態，例句：It's so hard to keep up with the news these days, especially when a huge story breaks every day.
美國有一個非常有名的真人秀《Keeping up with the Kardashians》，這裡面的keep up取的就是上面這個意思。
3.保持某種良好狀態，通常用於祈使句裡鼓勵某人繼續堅持。例句：Wow, these look great. Keep up the good work, James!
4.Light up
字面含義為照亮例句：Fireworks lit up the night sky.
引申含義為，將一個人的心情照亮，也就是使某人開心：例句：I'm sure she likes you—you just light her up whenever you're around.
5.Look up
這個短語字面意思是向上看，但是通常在英語中它表達的並不是字面含義，它最常用的含義是：搜索，查詢某條信息。例句：Can you look up the definition of this word for me?
當後面接「to someone」的時候，它的意思指崇拜敬仰某人。例句：The students really looked up to Mr. Jones.
6.Make up
Make是英語中最最常用的一個動詞，跟up組合在一起含義也非常多，這裡挑幾個最常見給大家解釋一下：1.後面接with someone的時候，指與某人發生矛盾後和好例句：They argue a lot, but they always kiss and make up.
2.編故事,說謊例句：He made up some excuse about his daughter being sick.
3.酒店打掃房間，例如你去國外住酒店，如果需要服務員打掃房間，就可以說，Would you please make up the room please?
當make和up合體的時候，它又變成了一個非常常用的名詞:makeup"化妝「。但是說化妝的時候通常用的是put這個動詞，最常見的搭配是「put makeup on」.例句：She put so much makeup today that I can barely recognize her.
7.Man up
Man是男人的意思，man up指像男人一樣鼓起勇氣，通常用於祈使句中，類似的表達方式還有：「Be a man！」它與man up在某些語境下可以互換。例句：He should man up and tell his boss what he really thinks.
8.Meet up
Meet這個詞本身就是「遇見」的意思，單獨用meet的時候，通常指的是無意的邂逅，但是當和up一起使用的時候，則指有計劃的碰面，它通常的固定表達方式為「meet up with somebody」.例句：I'm meeting up with my old friends for dinner tonight.
Meet和up合體時候變成一個名詞，Meetup指「見面會」的意思，通常meetup是非正式的，而meeting則更為正式。
9.Mess up
還記得我們上節課曾經的講過的粗口短語「fuck up」麼，mess up可以被當做它的文明版同義詞，指搞砸，搞亂的意思。例句：If you cancel now you'll mess up all my arrangements.
10.Open up
字面意思為"打開"，例如open up a bottle, 但是它還有一層引申含義，指打開心扉，開懷傾訴。例句：It’s taken a few months, but Katy is finally starting to open up to me.
11.Pack up
Pack作為名詞是「包」的意思，例如背包是「backpack」，當動詞的時候指「打包」，通常與up搭配組成一個動詞短語。Have you packed up your luggage? The flight is leaving in 3 hours!
12.Pile up
指。。。堆成山, 它可以用來形容垃圾，雜物，衣服等具體概念，也可以用來形容「工作，作業」這樣的抽象概念例句：Work always piles up at the end of the year.
13.Power up
在英語口語中，「電」這個概念有兩種表達方法，比較容易理解的是「electricity」，但是在口語中更常用則是"Power"，例如發電廠是Power Plant，而不是Eletricity Plant, Power up指的是給電器設備通電，供電。例句：You need to put the the red button twice to power up that machine.
14.Put up with
一個在英語口語非常常用的表達方式，指忍受令人不愉快的人或者事，可以用來替換「Tolerate」這個詞。例句：I will not put up with your bad behavior any longer!
15.Save up
「Save」這個動詞在單獨使用的有拯救，節省的意思，但是當與up組成詞組後，指的是積攢。例句：I've been saving up so I can afford to buy a new iPhone this year.
16.Set up
早些年經常使用電腦的朋友可能都對Setup.exe這個文件名不陌生，set up通常指的就是安裝的意思。例句：She set up her stereo in her bedroom.Set up的另外一個意思是栽贓陷害，特指做局陷害某人例句：He denied the charges, saying the police had set him up.
17.Show up
現身，出現例句：We had been waiting for him for 3 hours, thank god he finally showed up.
18.Shut up
一個在英語口語裡非常常見的短語，通常用於祈使句中，意思為：閉嘴！例句：Just shut up and listen!
19.Speak up
這個短語根據不同的語境有兩重含義：1.說話大聲一點例句：Please speak up—we can't hear you at the back.
2.直抒胸臆，暢所欲言例句：If anyone has a better idea, please speak up.
20.Speed up
Speed的原意是「速度」，Speed up指「加速」，例如你叫了一個計程車趕著去機場，你除了可以告訴司機「faster」以外，還可以說：「Can you please speed up a bit, we are going to be late for the flight.」
21.Spice up
Spice在英文中指調料，廚用香料的意思，在Spice up這個詞組中它變成一個動詞，指添加香料，除了字面含義外，它還有一層引申含義，指添油加醋的意思：例句：Newspaper reports tend to spice up the real story.
22.Split up
字面含義為：將某物分割成小部分例句：The day was split up into 6 one-hour sessions.to divide something into smaller parts
還有一層引申含義，指夫妻或情侶分手例句：My parents split up when I was 5 years old.
23.Start up
最近兩年大眾創新萬眾創業，大家肯定也對這個詞組很熟悉了，它的字面意思是「啟動」：例句：I cannot start up the engine because it's too cold outside.大家比較熟悉的另外一個含義是「創業」，後面通常跟的賓語為business。例句：She left the company last year to start up her own business.當Start與up合體為一個詞的後，"startup"指創業公司。
24.Stay up
我們在第一課曾講到過「Up」有起床的含義，那麼stay up就是保持起床狀態的意思，也就是熬夜不睡覺例句：I stayed up all night to watch the football games.
25.Stir up
Stir的意思是攪拌，stir up的字面含義是攪拌均勻例句：Make sure to stir up the curry before you serve it.
它還有一層引申含義，指攪局, 製造混亂狀況例句：The mayor has been stirring up controversy again with another inflammatory remark.
26.Suck up
Suck本身是"吮吸"的意思，但是Suck這個短語指的是「溜須拍馬」例句：Stop sucking up just to try to get an A. Just study like everyone else.
用短橫線連體後「Suck-up」可以做名詞，指愛拍馬屁的人。
27.Team up
Team作為名詞是團隊的意思，在Team up動詞短語的意思是：組成團隊。例句：If we teamed up, we could solve this crime in no time.
28.Take up
Take是英語裡最常用的動詞之一，它最常用的意思是「拿」，但在「take up」這個動詞短語中，它的含義是：花費，佔據(空間或者時間）。例句：I like the way the desk looks, but it takes up too much space in my office.
29.Tear up
Tear這個詞做名詞時候意為「眼淚」，發音為\tir\，但是當動詞時候指「撕」這個動作，發音為\ter\, tear up這個動詞短語指：「撕裂」例句：He tore up the letter angrily and threw it into the garbage can.
美國著名男生組合'Nsync曾經有過一首很有名的歌，Tearin' Up My Heart:
30.Top Up
這是一個在國外旅行時候常能用到的動詞短語，它的意思是充值，電話沒有花費了，需要Top up一下才能繼續用。例句：With our pay-as-you-go cell phone plans, you can top up over the phone or at various stores around the country.
31.Turn up
Turn是「轉動」的意思增加，老式家用電器的音量控制通常一個旋鈕，通過轉動來調節，因此「Turn up」這個動詞短語指的就是將音量調高。例句：Can you turn up the volume on the TV? I can't hear anything the reporter is saying.
31.Wake up
喚醒或者（從睡眠或者昏厥狀態中）醒過來例句：Siri, please wake me up at 5am tomorrow morning.酒店的「叫早服務」在英文中的說法就是「Wake Up Call」
32.Warm up
Warm本身是一個形容詞，指溫暖的，與up組合在一起行程了一個動詞短語，有兩重含義：1.氣溫從寒冷狀態逐漸升高例句：You can put your coat away because the weatherman says it's going to warm up this week.
2.熱身，特別是劇烈體育運動或者表演之前的準備活動。例句：You need to warm up properly before playing football, otherwise it's really easy to get injured.
33.Zip up
「Zip」在英語中本身是一個擬聲詞，指物體快速划過時候產生的摩擦聲，我們在日常生活中使用到最頻繁的會產生Zip聲音的東西應該就是「拉鎖」了，於是在英文中拉鎖就是「Zipper」，zip up作為一個動詞短語的字面意思就是拉上拉鎖，例句：Hey, I think you forgot to zip up your backpack.
當然，它也有一層引申含義，指閉嘴，可以腦補嘴上有拉鎖，拉上拉鎖就是閉嘴：例句：Zip up! I'm trying to watch a movie here!
