My first real basketball memory was a random Magic game during Shaq's rookie season. I was literally 5 years old, and I could remember my dad pointing to Shaq on the TV and saying "watch this kid." I watched Shaq break backboards and dominate people, all as a little kid who loved basketball. Yet, somehow, my favorite basketball player was Penny Hardaway.
For the next 9 years, I followed Penny like people followed MJ. Through the 100 surgeries. Through the dismantling of the Magic and the awkward Phoenix years. I eventually gave up after Phoenix and made my way to another team and player. Thinking back on it, I was almost bitter.
During his first 3 years in the league, he had as much potential to be the GOAT as anyone. He was a media sensation, one of the brightest young stars in the league, almost completely unique and unstoppable, and he and Shaq took their team to the finals before either were 25 years old.

Shaq was so impressed with his game while shooting the movie Blue Chips that he campaigned to front office to trade the #1 pick (Chris Webber) to obtain Hardaway in the draft. During Penny's rise, Jordan admitted that Hardaway was one of the top players to give him trouble. In my opinion the most talented tall point guard to emerge in the league since Magic. Explosive, unselfish and loved to entertain the fans with his flashy dimes and big slams.

Yeah, I feel like the Magic have really gotten shafted over the years. They do tend to draft well and make good moves but due to injuries or whatever they never seem to be quite able to string a championship team together.

More on topic, many people thought Penny, Shaq were primed to start a dynasty when they made the Finals in 95. They were too young, and Shaq was ambitious and wanted to expand his brand. Shaq packed his bags, and Penny could never capture the title after that as a result of injuries and bad luck. It's crazy to think about how different the NBA would be if Shaq had stayed in Orlando with Penny. I really think they could have won multiple championships, as long as Penny stayed healthy.

He was supposed to be the next Jordan (and was advertised by Nike like he would be) while he was playing baseball.
He was an athletic and tall guard (still relatively rare at the time) who could handle the ball, finish at the rim, and could post up any other guard stuck trying to defend him due to his size advantage.

Athletic as shit, played lockdown D, was a tremendous passer and extremely quick. He was ahead of his time when it came to the athletic point guard who also liked to score a lot.
Not only was he a great player he had the personality of one too. The Lil Penny ads, the dunks, that Orlando team was going places.
Then Shaq defected, Penny got hurt multiple teams and it all went downhill for a while.

He was really really good. Very similar to Derrick Rose, but with better defense; or you could compare him with Jerry West due to similar size. His duo with Shaq was a lot of fun to watch and they were dominating. I can't remember what year, maybe around '96-'97, there were even discussions about who's the better guard between Penny and Jordan. It was also around the time Grant Hill started to be marketed as the next super-star, but Penny was clearly better at the time.
Then he had all kinds of knee injuries and that ruined his career very quick. I remember he tried to make a comeback to the NBA in 07-08 where he played a few for the Heat, but there was nothing left there, unfortunately.
He definitely would've been a super-star if he stayed healthy.

You mean when Jordan as scoring over 30ppg on around 50% shooting? No one intelligently argued that Penny was better.
In the 95-96 season Jordan had 30ppg on 49.5% shooting and 42% from 3 point land, 6.6 rpb, 4.3 apg, 2.2 spg. There was not a god damn person outside of Orlando who would have thought that.

Penny's style was ahead of his time man, shame injuries got to him like they did.
He's a super genuine dude too, read "On These Courts" about him, coaching middle school kids. It's fantastic, Penny really gives back to Memphis.
