01last做形容詞
最後的;最末的;末尾的;最近的;上一個的;僅剩下的;最終的
She had a cold last week.
她上周感冒了。（某天得感冒）
Were you at work last week?
上周你在上班嗎？
We bought this house last year.
我們去年買了這所房子。
Last Sunday I met her on the supermarket.
上星期天我在超市遇見她。
last Sunday, week, year等，表示與本周，本月，本年等相連的過去的一周…。做時間狀語不加介詞in，on和at.
如表示延續到當前的一段時間，加the，並用相應的介詞：
The last decade has witnessed the fast development of online shopping.
過去的十年見證了網上購物的快速發展。
The last few days have been very wet.
最近幾天非常潮溼。
She had a cold for the last week.
她上周感冒了。（整周）
The Smiths have lived here for the last year.
史密斯一家去年一直住在這裡。
Great changes have taken place in the last decade.
在過去的十年裡發生了巨大的變化。
Have you paid the gas bill for the last month yet?
你付了上個月的燃氣費了嗎？
the last還能表示「一定範圍裡的」最後/最近一個/段：
Father missed his last bus home，and had to walk home.
父親錯過了回家的末班車，只好步行回家。
This was the last time I met him.
這是我最後一次見到他。
This is the last car I buy.
這是我買的最後一輛車。
On the last day of 1999, he moved to Beijing.
1999年的最後一天，他搬到了北京。
I got a cheap flight at the last minute.
我在最後一分鐘買到了廉價機票。
I got off the bus and walked the last two miles.
我下了公共汽車，走了最後兩英裡。
When is the last day I can pay for this?
我最遲哪天付錢？
the last person/thing有時可以理解為否定意思「最不」：
The last thing I wanted was to upset you.
我最不想讓你難過。
Go to school? That's the last thing I want to do!
去上學？我絕不！
He's the last person I'd expect to be mixed up in something like this.
他是我最不希望捲入這種事情的人。

I last met him in May.
我上次見到他是在五月。
He who laughs last laughs longest.
誰笑在最後，誰笑得最好。
03last做名詞
最後來的人(或發生的事);僅剩下的部分(或事項)
I was the last to go to bed last night.
昨晚我是最後一個上床睡覺的。
04last做動詞
持續;延續
I don't think the rain would last long.
我想雨不會下很久。
The operation lasted for four hours.
手術持續了四個小時

the last straw
忍無可忍；最後的一根稻草
It is the last straw that breaks the camel's back.
這是壓垮駱駝背的最後一根稻草。
He'd broken his promise again, and it was the last straw.
他又食言了，這真是忍無可忍。
