I am still not sure since when I am sobelieve that Hong Kong is a contemporary art museum. I try to find evidencesand answers, but all I get are more open-ended questions. The style of HongKong is undefined, just like the contemporary art, a place with lots ofmetaphors. Then what this art projectabout? It has a lot of thoughts and feelings to express, but if there are more seriousdescription, the less essence left. It will be far away from the 『inspiration』,but just large and impractical.
This art project , which is held in oldTong Lau ( indoor ) and Kowloon Street ( outdoor ) only can be explained withsome key words, it is the best way. Key words, offering imaging space for thespectators and artist, these words are not absolute definition.
當代
Contemporary era
Contemporary era, in narrow definition, means in the present time. Now. Happening. Without conclusion.
美術館
Art Museum
Art Museum, there is no events, nothinghappened, no time, no location, it is just an empty space. It has no selfnature, only if exhibitions are held, it will make sense. It is a space topresent art partially. It can be a stage for art, differ with the space forcreating.
Contemporary ArtMuseum
Contemporary art museum, it should havemore possibilities. No matter it is contemporary or post-contemporary, it isnot just for the tradition, or the future, even there must be some historicaltraces and the metaphors of future, it should be open, flowing, unsettled, andwithout specific definition. The uncertain conditions will lead to the dangerof over explanation, but, with this kind of danger, it will bear all placeswith different/hidden/free/lonely/brand new art events. It is not another spacefor the beneficiary to build up strong voice again.
場所
Place
On the spot, is there. Where the thingshappened. The evidence of existence.
香港
Hong Kong
Every place in Hong Kong, everything ishappening between various mediums, such as image, light and shadow, stranger, trade, advertisement, reproduction, conversation, modern building, Tong Lau,voice, internet, etc. And the headstream of all the occurrences is variouspeople are looking for 『who am I ?』 unconsciously. The life style has built upthe cultural landscape, and the cultural landscape has holpen growing the humancharacter, so the features of Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, New Territories, andOutlying Islands are different since the inbeings are different, and people isclosely related to the environment, then become another mixed style.
回憶
Memory
『I remember, or I was recalled, bysomething that in front of me, by the smell they left, or the hidden messagesin the code words that were written in the old letters, waiting to be recalled.』
German writer Günter Wilhelm Grassexpressed the passivity of memory. When we are writing our history, we realizewe can’t remember independently, all the reminiscence is polluted, and the leftpast records customized plots for us by memories.
But the worst truth is we are living in aninformation explosion age, all we see, all we master are reproductions. Wenever know the real. So our memory is copy as well.
Memory has been betrayed, and thereminiscence is betrayed again.
Can we make our own memories? The Memorywith personal perception and feelings?
Memory Theatre
In a place which is full of history traces,in an unsure memory scene, to imagine, follow your imagination to create, thenbuild your own future memory.
During this process, the artists againstthe reproduction and oblivion, to build another world with art, Milan Kunderahad mentioned in <The Curtain>, every details has its own importance andmeaning. Every words, every sentences should not be forgotten, they should beleft with the original appearance.
Now and Here
Even the most perfect reproduction of awork of art is lacking in one element: its presence in time and space, itsunique existence at the place where it happens to be. This unique existence ofthe work of art determined the history to which it was subject throughout thetime of its existence.
——Walter Benjamin
幽默
Humor
Contemporary art is quite black humor, itsrebellion againsts everything that are rigescent, including politics, morality, rule, and of course contemporary art itself.
