A duct-taped banana was priced and sold at $120,000 recently at Art Basel Miami. More surprisingly, it was eaten by a performance artist David Datuna soon after the deal.
Entitled "Comedian," the "sculpture" is the first new work debuted by renowned Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan in 15 years.
Cattelan, who often hangs the tropical fruit in his hotel room for inspiration, initially thought of crafting a banana using resin or bronze, but then decided the real fruit would better represent his message.
The gallery said there were three editions, and that two had already sold for around $120,000.
Organizers later announced that the installation had been removed altogether amid public safety concerns.
Cattelan is known for sculptures that challenge popular culture.
One of his artworks -- an 18-carat-gold toilet valued at around $6 million -- made headlines in September when it was ripped out of a wall and stolen from Bleinheim Palace in England.
