百香果的英文是「passion fruit」，passion的意思是「To have a very strong interest in something.」指對某事非常感興趣，充滿了熱情。做名詞解釋就是「激情、熱情、酷愛」等意思。

Any of various chiefly tropical tendril-bearing vines of the genus Passiflora, having large showy flowers with a fringelike crown and a conspicuous stalk bearing the stamens and pistil.
那又為什麼這種植物會被命名為「passion flower」，這是因為傳說中西番蓮的藤是纏繞在耶穌的十字架上的，而passion這個詞除了表示「熱情」，在宗教裡還特指「耶穌受難」，比如說《耶穌受難記》這部電影名就是《the Passion》，因此passion flower結出來的果實就是passion fruit，即百香果。
